If you haven't already purchased one, there's a hot new PS3 SKU coming in June to commemorate the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, confirmation of something we heard earlier today. The bundle includes the game, a DualShock 3 and an 80GB PS3 for the extremely reasonable price of $499. We're not sure of an exact date, but expect it sometime in late Q2, according the the press release. We've heard plenty of predictions that 2008 is going to be the PS3's year, and if this extremely attractive SKU is any indication, the future could be very bright indeed.

That said, if this 80GB PS3 still has the half-decent backwards compatibility, I might just pick it up and sell MGS4 to whatever fool will buy it. I saved a good bit of cash doing much the same with the PS2+'s network adapter and ATV Off-Road Fury.
But for the sake of argument lets say that:
* Everyone who buys Metal Gear Solid 4 ONLY buys the $500 80 Gig bundle
* Lets also say that Metal Gear Solid 4 sells as well as the original version did.
Yes, I know, both of these points are more than extraordinarily unlikely, but lets hold on for the sake of speculation...
So in our imaginary scenario, Metal Gear Solid 4 would sell around 5.6 million systems. That would take the PS3 from 10.35 million systems sold, up to an impressive 15.95 million PS3s sold worldwide - a number that is STILL BEHIND Microsoft's 17.22 million systems already sold.
Even in the very best case imaginable, where Metal Gear Solid 4 sells better than any other version AND every purchaser of Metal Gear Solid 4 ALSO purchases a PS3 it still will not sell enough systems to surpass Microsoft's 360.

The 80GB by itself at $499 has been selling more than the 40GB at $399.
So why exactly would the 80GB + MGS4 + DS3 + BC* at $499 not sell well??
I'm not expecting some kind of gigantic boost or anything but this is honestly the best deal on a PS3 that has come out since launch.
* Hopefully BC will still be there...
The press release does not mention it.
That's not to say it'll be the next Halo 3 Edition 360 or anything...but most people simply won't pay that much for a videogame console no matter what it comes with. Wii bundles sell for less than that often times and those comes with a hell of a lot more.
$399+MGS4 might be another story, though.
Otherwise, like the Halo 3 360's, it'll just sit there and look unwanted...not a perception Sony can afford right now.
But my point was that its been selling at $500 without MGS4 or DS3 so this is a good move...but whatever.
Good news though - PS2 BC is confirmed for this 80GB model.

I personally like it, as, like many teenagers, I only have a job during the summer. Since this'll be out by the time I get $500 from my job, I'll buy this bundle instead of some more 360 games. If it came out at around September, I'd have blown all my cash by then. And I'm sure some other kids are the same way.
good, i'm glad some people think it's too expensive. that way we don't get little kids like in XBL.

Late 2Q08 means you'll be sittin' on that fence for a few more months. Hope you brought a pillow and a book or something.
This news actually says "No one buy a PS3 for the next 4 months unless you are going to use it only as a BD player. Buy your GTAIV for 360. kthxbuy"
Plus, the 4 months allows for me to set aside ~$125 a month instead of plunking down the 500 all at once.

It didn't go up an $100 dollars, they just replaced Motorstrom with MGS4 and the Sixaxis with the DS3. Still a great offer.
They're definitely poised for a big gain - with 360 exclusives hitting PC and all multiplatform games being basically identical, Live is the only thing that really stands out for the 360... and even that is beginning to look meh compared to the promises of PS3 online (i.e. Resistance 2 offerings) and being free.
I dunno, seems like a smart move to me.

Oh crap I guess I would still buy it.
Nevertheless I would love to see a special KZ2 Ps3.

Sony is definitely getting their shit together in a hurry in 2008. Would they be even smarter and reduce the 40gb WITH a DS3 to $349?
