'Bionic Commando: Rearmed' on PSP with Remote Play
We've got to admit that over the last 12 months, we've been increasingly more impressed with the PSP, and we'd bet you have been too. Now, thrill as it becomes an even more relevant system: Capcom's Ben Judd recently let it slip to MTV that PSN game Bionic Commando: Rearmed will be playable on PSPs using the Remote Play feature. If this and Pixel Junk Monsters mark the start of a trend, it seems like a PSP purchase should be all but an afterthought for PS3 owners.
We are a little concerned though about how well an action game like Bionic Commando will make the leap across the internets to land in the PSP. As excited as we are for PSP arm swinging, it could all go to pot if lag is an issue. We'll keep our six-million dollar robotic claw crossed.

RemotePlay is definitely one of the better uses of the PSP these days. I've been using it mostly to watch movies during break at work. It's nice to know that more games will also work for it too. :)
Nate @ Feb 26th 2008 1:03PM
If you like RPGs (tactical and non), the PSP is where it's at. Final Fantasy I, II, Tactics, and soon Crisis Core... Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, Jeanne D'Arc... plus several fantastic racing games and some platformers to round it out... watch movies, play MP3s, remote play to your PS3 for movies, music, and ANY PS1 game - FF7 anyone? Web Browser, Internet Radio, Skype... I just picked one up because I couldn't justify NOT having one anymore. It's fantastic.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 9:59AM
I just wish PSPs weren't so damned expensive.
Einhanderkiller @ Feb 26th 2008 10:12AM
It's $170.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 10:22AM
Wake me up when it's $130.
FrankTheCrank @ Feb 26th 2008 10:23AM
$170, in the grand scheme of things, is really not that expensive. The DS Lite is still $129. And when you compare the two, the PSP just seems to be in a totally different league.
That screen is one of the best screens I've come across. The iPhone might have a better screen. It's a toss up.
Jomolungma @ Feb 26th 2008 10:23AM
My concern isn't over the cost of a PSP, it's over the cost of a PS3.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Feb 26th 2008 10:40AM
@Frank toss up or toss off? ;)
Tesley @ Feb 26th 2008 11:35AM
@ Jomolungma
What do you mean the cost of the PS3?...it's $399 now. IDK why you think it's expensive while the 360 was $399 for about 2 years and the Elite is still $449.99
Mark @ Feb 26th 2008 11:39AM
Only 90$ if Sony bricks your PSP in an auto-update!
Jomolungma @ Feb 26th 2008 11:43AM
@Tesley
I'm not saying the PS3 is expensive on its own. I think the price is competitive with the 360. But, since I don't own either the PS3 or the PSP, it would be a significant chunk of change to get both at the same time. That was my main point. I like the remote play feature, but you need both systems for it to work, and while the price of the PSP does not deter me, the cost of the PS3 on top of it is a barrier to entry for me.
Nate @ Feb 26th 2008 1:08PM
Jumo - the PSP is a great machine even without the PS3. Remote play is nice, but it's certainly not the best feature of the machine - the games are. God of War: Chains of Olympus, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, Wipeout Pulse... they're all fantastic games, and that's just scratching the surface... and they're all at an amazing 480x262. The screen and the graphics are just amazing. It really is like having a PS2 in the palm of your hand.
Orion_of_Chaos @ Feb 26th 2008 9:59AM
Sweet Christmas, this is such hotness. Makes it nice and easy to decide to get the PSTriple version instead of the 360. Bionic Commando on the go = pure win.
Co @ Feb 26th 2008 10:04AM
"Bionic Commando on the go = pure win."
Does is really though? There is no proof of this. Under your assessment, this could be exchanged for (fill in the blank game title) on the go = pure win. Thus, rendering your statement useless.

lol @ Co
u is teh mad ur Xboy cant haz dis lawlz!!!111!!1!11
but seriously, dude thats one sale. he thinks its better on PS3 so he'll buy it there. thats the whole point of multiplatform games last i checked. i dont have a 360 anyway so i was already going to purchase it on PS3. this will be an added bonus but i feel remote play is a little sluggish for this type of game. just stop spewing your fanboy filth, not everybody lives and dies by the 360, some people own more than one console. or *gasp* dont own a 360 at all.
Mills and Boom @ Feb 26th 2008 10:15AM
Or, hows about a PSP standalone version. I don't want to have to buy a PS3 to play this game.
WTF am I even saying, why would I want to play this game at all?
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 10:24AM
Um, do you like *anything*?
FOXHOUND @ Feb 26th 2008 10:32AM
Seriously. Almost every post is something pessimistic or disheartening. :\ Out of curiousness... Are there any games out there you're looking forward to?
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Feb 26th 2008 10:49AM
Mills and Boom -"I can afford pretty much anything I want.
I think it annoys you that I can afford any of these electronics without batting an eyelid yet I don't buy a PS3. Ooo just imagine being able to and not buying your wet-dream inducing console!"
Can I have some money please? lol
Mills and Boom @ Feb 26th 2008 2:03PM
I'm just very picky. I fookin love TF2. To the point that Steam says "eagles scream" or something from my 60 hours of play for 2 weeks.
I also love FF7 on my PSP, R-Type (any). Um. UMMM. Mario Kart DS was pretty savvy. GTA tickles my pickle.
I mean seriously. What was Bionic Commando and why are so many (few, but they run blogs) people getting chufties about it. I'm sure I played this as on the GBC, a platformer where you couldn't jump FFS.
The Boo @ Feb 26th 2008 3:03PM
You are a little too wet behind the ears to understand.
FOXHOUND @ Feb 27th 2008 10:53AM
'Mills and Boom' mentioned enjoying TF2. That's all I need to know. +1 for ya. :]
FrankTheCrank @ Feb 26th 2008 10:17AM
I actually bought a PSP when first released, it was $249 on launch.
I later got rid of it because of the lack of games and the push for UMD movies.
I'm now interested again in the PSP. It's such a swiss knife of portable gaming. The price is right as well.
I just wish they had slapped a 30GB drive into it during the redesign. That would make PSP perfect. A total iPod killer.
Jomolungma @ Feb 26th 2008 10:28AM
I've stayed away from the PSP for a long time, content with my DS. However, I've finally decided to take advantage of some Gamestop trade-in deals on 360 games and get a PSP. Patapon and God of War seem to be stellar titles, and I've wanted to play Crush for a while. It seems like developers are finally starting to develop specifically for the platform and are achieving consistent levels of quality. Since after trade-ins I can get it for pretty darn cheap, it's now a no-brainer purchase for me, even without a PS3 to marry it to.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 10:29AM
Yeah, me too. Bought it at launch, sold it and bought a DS 6 months later. Then bought a DS Lite. Been super happy with the DS, but still waiting for the PSP to drop to a price that is comparable with its software library (the media functionality is nice, but I've already got an iPod).
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Feb 26th 2008 10:45AM
Dont think it would ever be an ipod killer due to its delicate supple frame or it large and enticing length. Ipod is very portable and sturdy. I too made the psp mistake and sold mine. Now im wishing I had one for patapon,MG, and the warhammer games. Looks like i will have to cave in soon. As for the ps3 as soon as they put out a slim white with a 120 giggle and offer up the Top Gear on GT im all over it.
jdeuel @ Feb 26th 2008 10:28AM
since remoteplay has lag with video all the way down and control all the way up, on the ps3s wifi, from the same room, i don't see how anyone could get excited about it.
Honestly, trying to play Castlevania SotN is one of the worst experiences i've had on the psp since GTA:LCS decided to run at 12 fps
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Feb 26th 2008 10:47AM
I thought GTA:LCS was the best game on the system when it came out. They handled the camera and 1 stick problem admirably and provided some of the best characters in the GTA universe (until they give us another london 69)
FidliousWong @ Feb 26th 2008 11:55AM
I'm playing SOTN via Dracula X on PSP right now. I can't see where it's broken. Unless, of course, you're trying to do wifi via remote sourcing.. in which case, you're retarded.
Mills and Boom @ Feb 26th 2008 2:13PM
This is why I modded my PSP. I'm no pirate (still using a 64mb memory stick) but I like my games to run at good framerates. Boosting it up to 333mhz and theres little to no slowdown on GTA or the Tomb Raider games. Really makes them playable.
Only boo boo is the battery life jumps from ~6 hours to ~4 hours. Even less when the max brightness hack is on.
jdeuel @ Feb 26th 2008 6:14PM
dear mr wong, I'm glad you have the ability to read, but really need to work on reading comprehension as an ape could tell my post is about remote play and it is entirely irrelivant that dracula x chron. runs well, vs sotn running poorly on remote play.
Curmeo @ Feb 26th 2008 10:34AM
sweet! the PS3 version is definitely the superior version: hi-def visuals and Remote Play ftw!
i hope more PS3 devs offer Remote Play. better yet, make it a standard!
PS3 60GB + PSP Slim = best combo this gen.
jdeuel @ Feb 26th 2008 10:51AM
one of the benefits of ps3 development is not forcing standards.
Microsoft forces games to be live-aware, forces games to allow custom soundtracks, forces achievements, forces an audit for all dlc, forces forces forces.
No, not all of the things they force are bad, most are even good, but its unneccessary strain on devs.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 11:41AM
You do realize that the Xbox's XMB, Live functionality, in-game custom sountracks, Gamerscore and all of the other "forced features" are not only the reason a fair percentage of people bought the 360 in the first place, but are so popular that Sony has spent the last year trying copy their successes, right?
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Feb 26th 2008 1:04PM
baby sea tuna doesnt know what XMB means lol. last i checked, 360 had the Dashboard not the XMB (which stands for Cross Media Bar, or the home UI it uses).
but seriously, he is right. alot of those forced features have made the 360 what it is today and Sony has now been trying to implement them. they say its about choice and connectivity and they do achieve that in most aspects. PS3's level of choice is great as well with being able to use standard computer parts and such but i do envy some of the 360's choices as well. hopefully we'll get them soon too though.

RemotePlay is pretty worthless most of the time.
I mean its a nice feature but most of the time I can't even log into online access because RemotePlay doesn't allow you to use a browser before it tries to connect to your PS3. So 90% of the free wifi locations I've run across are inaccessible. Do you people who praise it when it pops up really have unsecured wifi hotspots all around you? I live in the SF Bay Area and you can't use it period most of the time. The only time I was able to get it to work was using the free trial of the T-Mobile hotspot service. Hell until they added browser access to the RSS feed I couldn't use that either. Thankfully that was fixed and they added it, but RemotePlay is still borked. So fuck that, I'd rather they allowed you to transfer it to PSP like the PSX games.
Kevin @ Feb 26th 2008 11:15AM
Can't wait
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Feb 26th 2008 11:33AM
While remote play is nice, why has the FACT that the 360 version will be crippled due to size limits? Have you not heard? The 360 version will NOT have hirez textures and the sound will be gimped.
Like you guys keep telling me, Microsoft allows choice right?
buzzbean @ Feb 26th 2008 11:36AM
Sweet! I just ordered a PSP just for this type of thing. Sony it just keeps getting better and better!
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Feb 26th 2008 11:42AM
Bionic Commando remake GIMMPED on the 360 due to Microsoft enforced SIZE restrictions
http://kotaku.com/359502/xbla-bionic-commando-gimped-due-to-size-restrictions
Get used to it 360'ers...SIZE matters. And size will matter more and more, and NOT just with DL games. Can u say BLU-RAY?
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 11:48AM
Oh trollboy, you so kayrazy!
Jtenma @ Feb 26th 2008 11:54AM
SIR, IM GONNA HAVE TO ASK YOU TO HAVE A SEAT OVER THERE.
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Feb 26th 2008 12:04PM
Question, how can I be trolling on a (stay with me now) PS3/PSP remote play thread?
All I did was post a link to an article that was posted DAYS ago on Kotaku, yet Joystiq STILL has not posted this in my opinion significant story. The replies on the Kotaku thread are pretty interesting indeed.
Remember when Microsoft told you that DVD9 is more than good enough for this generation? By the fall you will see more and more games either gimmped or crippled due to the pathetic 7.5gb size of the DVD9. AAA games for PS3 MGS4, R2, among others are reported to be 30gb+ in size.
2008 is going to be alot different than 2007 for all of you 360 fanboys that bashed the PS3 relentlessly. The shoe is on the other foot now is'nt it...and it's going to STAY there for the duration of this generation.
timnc @ Feb 26th 2008 12:04PM
Wow the respect for you is getting lower and lower. WTF does downloaded games have to do with blu-ray?
qo_op @ Feb 26th 2008 12:13PM
@timnc, hes making a point. You took it literally.
You=FAIL
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 12:50PM
How about the fact that this article has ZERO to do with the 360, yet you mention its inferiority in not one, but two posts. Where I'm from, that's a troll.
Vidikron (FU) @ Feb 26th 2008 12:51PM
KayRazy Ken may post some crazy stuff sometimes, but he's right on this one. The fact that the 360 version is going to me stripped down a bit graphically and have this remote play features means that the PS3 is very likely where I'll end up buying this game.
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Feb 26th 2008 1:03PM
"How about the fact that this article has ZERO to do with the 360, yet you mention its inferiority in not one, but two posts. Where I'm from, that's a troll."
A hypocrite you are...you state this article has ZERO to do with the 360 yet you posted this...
"You do realize that the Xbox's XMB, Live functionality, in-game custom sountracks, Gamerscore and all of the other "forced features" are not only the reason a fair percentage of people bought the 360 in the first place, but are so popular that Sony has spent the last year trying copy their successes, right?"
It looks like your memory is as BIG as the 360's size limmit.
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Feb 26th 2008 1:20PM
DAMN KayRazy Ken! no u didnt! oh no u didnt!
u get um man cause u are right on this one and i hadnt even heard about the 360 versions limitations until now since Joystiq refuses to post anything that may make the 360 look bad. how many "the delay was the PS3's fault" post do we have to see on here without seeing one "the 360 version will have less features because of size limitations" post? get um Ken!
