Defend your Castle coming to WiiWare
Now that we have a definite launch date for Nintendo's WiiWare service, we can expect the software announcements to start rolling in. Up to bat today is a WiiWare version of the flash game Defend your Castle, a little literally-titled affair where players must... defend their castles.
Defending one's castle can be as easy as picking up and throwing oncoming enemy stick-figures with the cursor, but later levels unlock more devious means of dispatching would-be castle crashers. The WiiWare version will feature updated graphics, and will be available in "early 2008" for 500 Wii Points.
That said, check out XGen Studios' original flash game, and let us know if you think a WiiWare version will be worth the admittedly-modest price of admission.

I think it could work if they do enough enhancements. Let's face it, even as a flash game it has more value than a lot of old NES games.
Vince @ Feb 26th 2008 11:04PM
this is worse than N+ on XBLA. it's sad that today people don't see a problem with paying for things they can get for free.
Worst Review Ever @ Feb 26th 2008 11:27PM
I know, but not all of us are thieves or rapists.
flYY @ Feb 26th 2008 11:44PM
Lol i though RIAA and MPAA were saying the opposite
Cyantre @ Feb 26th 2008 11:13PM
It depends, this game could be really fun with the Wii. Hopefully the enhancements will justify the price.
GoldenS1104 @ Feb 26th 2008 11:15PM
As good as this game is, I don't see it working very well on any console, even the Wii. It's hard just using a mouse to play this game, but the wii pointer seems like it would be even tougher. Flicking those people away would also probably hurt more than it does with the mouse.
risrepkel @ Feb 27th 2008 12:22AM
It might help if they make some sort of auto-aim. Basically snapping the cursor to a nearby stickman when you get close enough.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Feb 27th 2008 3:04PM
Ah, yes... fudge factors. What would Wii games be without them?
Frankly, I'd like to see more of the revolutionary content Nintendo has been talking about, rather than port of free PC games. These "enhancements"... are they graphics? We all know what Nintendo thinks about that stuff, right?
samfish @ Feb 26th 2008 11:21PM
They'd have to make a hell of a lot of enhancements before I buy this. The original is kind of boring.
I'd totally pay for Fancy Pants Adventure, though. That game is pure awesome.
The Artist formally known as Jesus @ Feb 26th 2008 11:44PM
ahh I love that game
I'd kill to bring FPA to consoles
ThornedVenom (Patapornographer) @ Feb 26th 2008 11:25PM
I guess it can't hurt to be able to finally really pick up those dudes by pointing and holding the B button (as opposed to clicking and dragging).
But yeah, they ought to improve graphics (even though I rarely dispute graphical quality if style is present): otherwise, they can just find me playing the game on a Flash game website thanks to the Opera browser.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Feb 26th 2008 11:32PM
If they are making game that were originally free flash games and putting them on wii-ware, they better make a Wiiware version of that bitch-slapping game. That would be fucking killer.
Shmil @ Feb 26th 2008 11:33PM
wait a minute... couldn't i just go to some website using the opera browser and play this? i guess the only improvements they could do is set the game in full screen rather than a small flash box. Maybe some nice music i guess.
iofthestorm @ Feb 26th 2008 11:44PM
Seriously, you can even get full screen by zooming in in Opera. This is probably just a stupid cash-in attempt.
fischju @ Feb 26th 2008 11:50PM
A great game....but not worth $5...
Burnt Meatloaf @ Feb 27th 2008 3:07PM
If a game isn't worth $5, then it is not "great".
fischju @ Feb 27th 2008 3:23PM
It is a free flash game, I can use the Opera browser to play it without paying $5. That means it is not worth it.
John McPoop @ Feb 27th 2008 12:00AM
Looks Awesome!
Secura @ Feb 27th 2008 12:01AM
Wow.....just.....wow.
Anyone up for a tough puzzle? http://www.azmyth.com/game
Secura @ Feb 27th 2008 12:02AM
BTW, i'm stuck on 2j.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Feb 27th 2008 12:14AM
GTFO. I thought your little link was a simple NotPr0n clone 'till I caught sight of the whole payal and 'prize money' bs. Bring yo spam elsewhere.
Secura @ Feb 27th 2008 12:22AM
It's not spam, I was just sharing a puzzle game with everyone to see how far you can get. The paypal stuff is just to buy a hint and if you win the whole thing, the guy sends you however much money he got from people buying them. Hopefully that made sense, I'm off to bed.
samfish (C*G*D*F*) @ Feb 27th 2008 1:18AM
I don't get it.
And thus, I gave up after less than 2 minutes.
YAY attention span!
Fatass of Kickassness @ Feb 27th 2008 12:18AM
Meh. I'm way too hostile these days. Still seems like spam to me.
Anywhos, this news does not interest me in the slightest. Unless there are a good amount of enhancements, I won't even give it a second look.
3cubed minus 3squared plus1 @ Feb 27th 2008 12:33AM
Just like people bought fl0w for PSN, there will be people that will eat this up.
Coyote @ Feb 28th 2008 8:38PM
Yes but flow was a marked improvement of the flash game, beyond the point that flash could even compare to. And honestly if they wanted to do Defend the Castle, the prequel "Pillage the village" is much more fun.
Avarice @ Feb 27th 2008 12:52AM
A man creates, a parasite asks... where's my free games?
...
That said, where's Cave Story for XBLA, WiiWare, etc? I wanna play that on the big screen!
ScottyGEE32 @ Feb 27th 2008 2:08AM
Holy crap! With wii controls itd be pretty funny to watch!
Psaakyrn @ Feb 27th 2008 2:37AM
To those who says they won't buy it if it's free elsewhere:
Would them taking it off the net help you to make a purchase decision?
(think about it.)
Burnt Meatloaf @ Feb 27th 2008 3:10PM
I'm sure most people who actually tried the game only did because somebody else told them, "you have to try this!" or "check out this link!"
How many people played it for more than 5 minutes?
Jamesology @ Feb 27th 2008 3:27AM
I swear most Wii games are from addictinggames.com
Charles @ Feb 27th 2008 5:41AM
Well, yeah, I would buy it, if it has enhancements so great it'll be worth it, i mean seriously, it's already a Wii Compatible Flash game...so it has to be WAAAY better...
DMeisterJ @ Feb 27th 2008 7:01AM
A free flash game on the Wiiware for five bucks? How original... and overpriced.
Luka M. @ Feb 27th 2008 7:58AM
Damn people, have you ever thought that the console version would have completely different graphics and tons of new stuff which you can't even compare with the free flash version? This is like saying that Alien Hominid is free online so why pay for the PS2 version? ...
Dauragon88 @ Feb 27th 2008 8:52AM
Finally, some one with sense!
It will probably have a few enhancements to make more console worthy.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Feb 27th 2008 9:15AM
Of course Alien Hominid is a bit different since the free online game was basically a demo, though I agree with what you're saying.
Also I mean didn't Sony have Flow? Which, if I'm correct, was teh same exact game as the free web game. The only difference was that it looked a bit prettier and you had to pay for it. Don't remember people complaining about that.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Feb 27th 2008 3:16PM
Nobody wants to take a risk, even when it comes to budget software. Better to make a port of something that works than try something new.
Many people have heard of this game. No promotion is needed, especially since a demo is almost certainly not going to happen.
Face it, WiiWare, with its "highly innovative indie developers", will likely suffer the same fate as the majority of retail software: cheap rehashes of previous titles. Downloadable content is not immune to common business practices (and customer tolerances) as any other kind of software, no matter how little each title may cost.
Why people are expecting massive innovation for such cheap software is beyond me. If people actually buy this crap, they will just get more of it, which is exactly the same issue with the retail industry.
Luka M. @ Feb 27th 2008 4:37PM
Defend Your Castle is also a "demo". Flash just doesn't deliver so developers turn to much more powerful consoles (next to a simple flash player) which can process stuff infinitely better and with today's options such as XBLA and WiiWare, developers can easily implement ideas which they originally had. So instead of whining - support them.
WiNG @ Feb 27th 2008 10:10AM
This game is fun but too easy.
Once you get all the magic i basically becomes a game of "how much can I left click in one spot" for the next 300 levels.
Deke42 @ Feb 27th 2008 10:31AM
WiNG - I'm sure XGen will revamp the game balance and mechanics for WiiWare
Burnt Meatloaf @ Feb 27th 2008 3:24PM
Deke42: What makes you say that? If the developer had any commitment to quality, they would make an entirely different game concept that... you know, would make better use of the controller. Hell, just about any VirtualConsole game is better than this tripe.
But, hey, if your competition consists of the likes of POP, I suppose unprofessional hacks like Defend Your Castle and Fishy are all you need to make a quick buck.
jopojelly @ Feb 27th 2008 10:16AM
Five Bucks??
I can go down the Gamestop and get Soul Calibur II, Metroid Prime, or XIII for 5 bucks....I'm thinking 50 points would be a good price.
thispaceforsale @ Feb 27th 2008 11:36AM
I noticed it doesn't play like system shock 2, star control 3 or beneath a steel sky.
Which is disappointing.
Bebofire @ Feb 28th 2008 12:45AM
Um..
the opera browser is the same price
why not just buy that instead and play the game for free, and you get internet...
PieMaster @ Feb 28th 2008 11:25PM
A bit more info here, it definitely looks like they've improved the game:
