More news from the Destination PlayStation retailer conference: last-gen rumble is reportedly coming to North American PS3 controllers this April with the release of the DualShock 3. The unit should go on sale on April 15th for $54.99 (a $5 premium over the rumble-less Sixaxis), timed to coincide with the April 17th launch of rumble-capable GT5: Prologue. We've asked Sony to confirm this information.
[Update: Press release just came over the wire confirming an April launch and the $54.99 price tag.]

yes they are way too expensive. PS3 and 360 controllers are all right around $50 and a Wiimote with nunchuk (which you will almost certainly need) is $60. thats a whole dame game i had to miss to buy another controller! i dont see what they do so different that they have to cost that much. im glad Sony only went up $5 on it but its still too expensive regardless.

I was thinking the same when I saw this post. The prices of controllers are so damn high. Having to replace two wireless controllers at that price seems like a huge waste of money to me. Damn shame. Now, if the redid the triggers to be more comfortable I would be much more interested.

Wow, no way am I spending that much. I hope the street price is less. I thought a 360 controller was only $40.

Amen to that Nato, redesign the thing atleast if your gonna charge up the anus. Switch the D-pad with the left analog already, make the triggers better, make the damn thing bigger for people with MAN sized hands damnit!!

i guess i have girly hands then cause the 360 controller is too big for me lol. it makes my hands sweat which is very uncomfortable. and switched D-Pad and left analogue stick would not be a good move in my book. the way it is now feels great to me. the triggers are an abomination though i will give you that and a dip in the analogue sticks would be nice as well.

How about they just get rid of the fucking useless sixaxis controls, put Immersion's new rumble technology in the Dualshock2, call it the Dualshock3, and sell it 5 dollars cheaper.
F***ing idiots.

Shh, that "useless" SIXAXIS control added a whole extra hour or so to my playtime of Heavenly Sword!
...of course, I spent 56 minutes of that hour actively trying to not throw my controller through the TV in frustration...

I actually think that while controller purchases are mind numbingly expensive across the board, I tend to measure value in terms of relative amount of use. So, yeah, it'll cost $55 to buy this (or a hair more to import it), but that cost will be offset by the amount you'd use it. Say, for example, you only have the SIXAXIS that came with the system. If you bought a Dual Shock 3, and used it as your primary controller, then you'd certainly get more value for your dollar than you would out of most games. Heck, there are full blown games that cost the same and don't last as long as a single charge on a controller like the SIXAXIS. Looking at it that way, yeah,it still sucks to shell out the cash, but it almost makes it worth it...almost.

Sony sure loves gouging people. 5 extra dollars for what they should have launched with and with 50% smaller battery life? Yes please!

At least they dont charge $100 for a wifi adapter or $120 for a 120gb hdd or charge for themes or charge for $50 for online play.
Its $5 dollars more, big deal. The Wiimote/nunchuck is $60 and the 360 wireless is $50. Not to mention you have to buy BATTERIES over and over for the Wiimote and 360 controller whereas the DS3 has a built in rechargable battery that will not cost me anymore $$$.

I bought 4 WiiChargable batteries for $20 with a changer. That is $20 well spent.

It's called rechargeable batteries. Anyone who owned either a wavebird or a gameboy in the past 100 years has at least 2 of these. And they still provide more life than the DS3's pathetic 15 hours.

Oh wait. They do.

@NATO_Duke: "I hardly see what the wifi connector has to do with this."
Easy, a feature that came standard with two other consoles that is being charged extra for. The PS3 is not immune to these charges (HDMI cables, Dual Shock, etc) but really, you can't see the connection?
Now the sealed batteries are annoying. The only defense I can offer there is that it's $55 and not a gawddamn $500+ sealed Apple product.

No Borland, I can't. The post is about the new controller being released, and as always - Ken goes on a tirade about the 360 and Wii - then all the PS3 fanboys all agree with him just because he screams Sony FTW!
I have no problem with the controller, and think the prices of all the controllers by everyone are too high. It just gets old seeing the blind rants where people desperately look for negative facts on another system just for attention. WiFi & HD prices have nothing to do with this. If you want to talk price - compare the prices of the controllers. Otherwise the other side just comes back with what PS3 stuff they had to buy that didn't come with it - which is equally unimportant for the conversation at hand.

Good try Vid - but you're wrong. Yes, the initial attack was on Sony yet it was not saying anything about another product being better. If someone said MS/Wii FTW in their attack then it would make sense to come at those products - but as usual, that wasn't the situation here. Therefore, how am I showing bias? I'm not.
It isn't showing bias to say someone else cannot do anything but fanboy slam other products.

At least it has a tilt sensor and doesn't require another $10 in rechargeable batteries and can be recharged by plugging it into the console.
360: no tilt
360 & wii: need to spend more money on rechargeable batteries
And yes, $55 is way too much for one freakin' controller for any system. Oh well, at least they're wireless, I can't even comprehend using wired controllers anymore.

Yeah, but who really gives a shit about tilt? Maybe I just haven't played the right game yet, but the games I have played that use it feel really stupid and tacked on (Heavenly Sword, for example).
As for the Wii remotes, I bought the Nyko dock for $25- came with two rechargable packs and the dock station. And even though I can recharge the PS3 controller by plugging it into the PS3, that leaves it dangling from my kinda-cramped entertainment center. I plan on getting a docking station-ish thing for PS3, too.

June, if http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/26/destination-playstation-metal-gear-solid-4-dated-for-june/ is right. There's no way that will be $400 though, not with the currently $499 80GB and a game packaged in.

Meh I already imported mine from japan. The rumble is pretty weak but the controller's weight is much better and doesnt feel as cheap and shitty. Other then that the controller is exactly the same as the sixaxis.

It was wroth the import price. Its $59 over there at play-asia. But playing Uncharted with rumble, priceless.

Yea but the rumble's gotta be weak though, due to the motion sensing. It's funny comparing the rumble of the Wiimote/DS3 compared to the Cube controller and DS2. Those last gen controllers pack a punch.
