DualShock 3 to debut in April for $54.99
More news from the Destination PlayStation retailer conference: last-gen rumble is reportedly coming to North American PS3 controllers this April with the release of the DualShock 3. The unit should go on sale on April 15th for $54.99 (a $5 premium over the rumble-less Sixaxis), timed to coincide with the April 17th launch of rumble-capable GT5: Prologue. We've asked Sony to confirm this information.
[Update: Press release just came over the wire confirming an April launch and the $54.99 price tag.]

lol...I thought Sony stop using babies for their ads...
Matt B @ Feb 26th 2008 2:13PM
They did. But funny gifs FTW!
JerJerBinks @ Feb 26th 2008 2:35PM
Does that really qualify as funny GIF?
FrankTheCrank @ Feb 26th 2008 3:49PM
That is one demented GIF! I laughed, I cried...the baby rocked some Jedi powers.
acefondu @ Feb 26th 2008 2:00PM
Is it just me or are game controller prices seriously out of control? (pun intended)
FOXHOUND @ Feb 26th 2008 2:02PM
If I added the cost of all the controllers I bought for my three consoles together(3 Wii Remotes, 4 PS3 controllers, 2 X360), I probably could've bought another Wii.
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Feb 26th 2008 2:21PM
yes they are way too expensive. PS3 and 360 controllers are all right around $50 and a Wiimote with nunchuk (which you will almost certainly need) is $60. thats a whole dame game i had to miss to buy another controller! i dont see what they do so different that they have to cost that much. im glad Sony only went up $5 on it but its still too expensive regardless.
NATO_Duke @ Feb 26th 2008 2:29PM
I was thinking the same when I saw this post. The prices of controllers are so damn high. Having to replace two wireless controllers at that price seems like a huge waste of money to me. Damn shame. Now, if the redid the triggers to be more comfortable I would be much more interested.
Boostjunkie @ Feb 26th 2008 2:30PM
Wow, no way am I spending that much. I hope the street price is less. I thought a 360 controller was only $40.
xFenixKnightx @ Feb 26th 2008 2:36PM
Amen to that Nato, redesign the thing atleast if your gonna charge up the anus. Switch the D-pad with the left analog already, make the triggers better, make the damn thing bigger for people with MAN sized hands damnit!!
FOXHOUND @ Feb 26th 2008 2:54PM
I forgot to add in the cost of NiMH batteries/recharge packs for the Wii/Xbox360... 'cause I'll be damned if I'm going to spend nearly $30 a month on alkaline batteries; especially after SMASH BROS BRAWL is released next month. x_x
Mr Khan @ Feb 26th 2008 4:23PM
Aye, this generation is the one where they start to gouge for controllers
I thought BlueTooth was supposed to make this kind of thing cheaper?
ronald.raygun @ Feb 26th 2008 4:28PM
makes me feel like rock band's peripherals aren't that expensive at all.
finnith @ Feb 26th 2008 7:57PM
@Fenix
That would be like the 360 controller, which is like, my favorite one.
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Feb 26th 2008 9:38PM
i guess i have girly hands then cause the 360 controller is too big for me lol. it makes my hands sweat which is very uncomfortable. and switched D-Pad and left analogue stick would not be a good move in my book. the way it is now feels great to me. the triggers are an abomination though i will give you that and a dip in the analogue sticks would be nice as well.
FOXHOUND @ Feb 26th 2008 2:00PM
Hmm... buy a new game or buy a new DS3 controller. Ouch. Decisions, decisions.
Well, if it's to "enhance the METAL GEAR experience"... -hands wallet to SONY-
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 2:09PM
Bout fuckin time.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 2:10PM
Addendum: Christ that's expensive!
Negativecool @ Feb 26th 2008 2:10PM
How about they just get rid of the fucking useless sixaxis controls, put Immersion's new rumble technology in the Dualshock2, call it the Dualshock3, and sell it 5 dollars cheaper.
F***ing idiots.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 2:27PM
Shh, that "useless" SIXAXIS control added a whole extra hour or so to my playtime of Heavenly Sword!
...of course, I spent 56 minutes of that hour actively trying to not throw my controller through the TV in frustration...
Spikeydeathtrap @ Feb 26th 2008 2:13PM
I actually think that while controller purchases are mind numbingly expensive across the board, I tend to measure value in terms of relative amount of use. So, yeah, it'll cost $55 to buy this (or a hair more to import it), but that cost will be offset by the amount you'd use it. Say, for example, you only have the SIXAXIS that came with the system. If you bought a Dual Shock 3, and used it as your primary controller, then you'd certainly get more value for your dollar than you would out of most games. Heck, there are full blown games that cost the same and don't last as long as a single charge on a controller like the SIXAXIS. Looking at it that way, yeah,it still sucks to shell out the cash, but it almost makes it worth it...almost.
Van Faulk @ Feb 26th 2008 2:11PM
Sony sure loves gouging people. 5 extra dollars for what they should have launched with and with 50% smaller battery life? Yes please!
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Feb 26th 2008 2:16PM
At least they dont charge $100 for a wifi adapter or $120 for a 120gb hdd or charge for themes or charge for $50 for online play.
Its $5 dollars more, big deal. The Wiimote/nunchuck is $60 and the 360 wireless is $50. Not to mention you have to buy BATTERIES over and over for the Wiimote and 360 controller whereas the DS3 has a built in rechargable battery that will not cost me anymore $$$.
nipples @ Feb 26th 2008 2:24PM
BUT BUT YOU HAVE A CHOICE TO BUY THE BATTERIES!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
NATO_Duke @ Feb 26th 2008 2:31PM
Oh look, its Ken the broken record with more lame attacks on the 360 & Wii. I hardly see what the wifi connector has to do with this.
zelderman @ Feb 26th 2008 2:44PM
@ Ken
I bought 4 WiiChargable batteries for $20 with a changer. That is $20 well spent.
Van Faulk @ Feb 26th 2008 2:51PM
@ken
It's called rechargeable batteries. Anyone who owned either a wavebird or a gameboy in the past 100 years has at least 2 of these. And they still provide more life than the DS3's pathetic 15 hours.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Feb 26th 2008 2:55PM
@Ken
Yeah I mean, it's not like Nintendo or Microsoft have a rechargeable battery pack.
Oh wait. They do.
borland502 (SDF - Macross Ring) @ Feb 26th 2008 3:16PM
@NATO_Duke: "I hardly see what the wifi connector has to do with this."
Easy, a feature that came standard with two other consoles that is being charged extra for. The PS3 is not immune to these charges (HDMI cables, Dual Shock, etc) but really, you can't see the connection?
Now the sealed batteries are annoying. The only defense I can offer there is that it's $55 and not a gawddamn $500+ sealed Apple product.
NATO_Duke @ Feb 26th 2008 3:37PM
No Borland, I can't. The post is about the new controller being released, and as always - Ken goes on a tirade about the 360 and Wii - then all the PS3 fanboys all agree with him just because he screams Sony FTW!
I have no problem with the controller, and think the prices of all the controllers by everyone are too high. It just gets old seeing the blind rants where people desperately look for negative facts on another system just for attention. WiFi & HD prices have nothing to do with this. If you want to talk price - compare the prices of the controllers. Otherwise the other side just comes back with what PS3 stuff they had to buy that didn't come with it - which is equally unimportant for the conversation at hand.
Vidikron (FU) @ Feb 26th 2008 4:15PM
@NATO_Duke
Csn't you see your own bias? Ken only responded to yet another attack on the PS3. Why did you address Ken and not the OP? Like it or not, Ken made a very valid point against the initial attack on Sony.
NATO_Duke @ Feb 26th 2008 5:28PM
Good try Vid - but you're wrong. Yes, the initial attack was on Sony yet it was not saying anything about another product being better. If someone said MS/Wii FTW in their attack then it would make sense to come at those products - but as usual, that wasn't the situation here. Therefore, how am I showing bias? I'm not.
It isn't showing bias to say someone else cannot do anything but fanboy slam other products.
NATO_Duke @ Feb 26th 2008 5:30PM
Also Vid - I have no idea what you mean by OP.
Hyams @ Feb 26th 2008 2:11PM
I want another controller or two for some of that hot four-player splitscreen action. May as well wait for the rumbley one now, even though I'll probably always have rumble turned off.
Hyams @ Feb 26th 2008 2:12PM
Oh wait, it's more expensive? I'll probably give it a miss then.
Martez @ Feb 26th 2008 2:13PM
$54.99 for a three generation old controller with three generation old rumble technology and a tilt sensor? Pass.
Matt B @ Feb 26th 2008 2:43PM
At least it is rechargeable out of the box.
Martez @ Feb 26th 2008 3:26PM
So is the one I already have.
Nate @ Feb 26th 2008 3:44PM
At least it has a tilt sensor and doesn't require another $10 in rechargeable batteries and can be recharged by plugging it into the console.
360: no tilt
360 & wii: need to spend more money on rechargeable batteries
And yes, $55 is way too much for one freakin' controller for any system. Oh well, at least they're wireless, I can't even comprehend using wired controllers anymore.
Martez @ Feb 26th 2008 3:49PM
Yeah, but who really gives a shit about tilt? Maybe I just haven't played the right game yet, but the games I have played that use it feel really stupid and tacked on (Heavenly Sword, for example).
As for the Wii remotes, I bought the Nyko dock for $25- came with two rechargable packs and the dock station. And even though I can recharge the PS3 controller by plugging it into the PS3, that leaves it dangling from my kinda-cramped entertainment center. I plan on getting a docking station-ish thing for PS3, too.
Jayslacks @ Feb 26th 2008 2:16PM
I won't buy a Ps3 until the this happens.
1. It is 400 dollars (done)
2. There are games worth playing (getting there)
3. There is Rumble packaged in.
Any ideas when the last one might happen? Christmas?
xFenixKnightx @ Feb 26th 2008 2:23PM
Yeah I think Christmas, and I think I shoulda waited to buy it this Christmas coming up rather than last Christmas =( Hopefully youll get a packed in HD cable (if you have an HDTV) of course because I didnt get one.
Arghhh >:(
baby sea tuna @ Feb 26th 2008 2:29PM
But no backward compatibilty.
Trev @ Feb 26th 2008 2:42PM
June, if http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/26/destination-playstation-metal-gear-solid-4-dated-for-june/ is right. There's no way that will be $400 though, not with the currently $499 80GB and a game packaged in.
samfish @ Feb 26th 2008 2:19PM
Hey hey. On tax day, too. That's the day when people are just thrilled to be spending money.
Matt B @ Feb 26th 2008 2:44PM
Don't forget about the $600 us tax payers get in May too..
deaftly @ Feb 26th 2008 2:24PM
Meh I already imported mine from japan. The rumble is pretty weak but the controller's weight is much better and doesnt feel as cheap and shitty. Other then that the controller is exactly the same as the sixaxis.
kbomb1upc @ Feb 26th 2008 3:14PM
It was wroth the import price. Its $59 over there at play-asia. But playing Uncharted with rumble, priceless.
Co @ Feb 26th 2008 4:39PM
Yea but the rumble's gotta be weak though, due to the motion sensing. It's funny comparing the rumble of the Wiimote/DS3 compared to the Cube controller and DS2. Those last gen controllers pack a punch.
