Dr Pepper becomes official drink of Major League Gaming

Although it's taken for granted that Mountain Dew is the major brand soda staking claim to the gamer demographic, Dr Pepper announced today it is the official beverage of the 2008 Major League Gaming Pro Circuit. The deal is a "cross-platform partnership" which includes a "Dr Pepper Ultimate Gaming House" at MLG events and a co-branded online collegiate gaming championship.

The Dr Pepper gaming house (an elaborate tent-like facility) will be present at every MLG event and includes various rooms "designed by premier gaming publishers" sporting the latest in gaming equipment. The house will also host pro-gamers and "high-profile entertainment and sports celebrities" to play against -- according to the press release -- "Dr Pepper fans." Do you have to bring a stack of Dr Pepper UPCs to prove allegiance or something?

The online collegiate gaming championship will identify the best college gamers (via migpro.com) in the country and they'll vie for an award of their own and a chance to attend the MLG Championship. If Dr Pepper gets traction off this deal we're expecting Team Fortress 2, CoD4 or Counter-Strike branded soda cans.

Isn't the whole "gamers drink Mountain Dew" a little dated? What is this, 1995? It's like saying Tab is the dieter's drink of choice.... sure, 20 years ago.

Honestly, most gamers are probably like most people - they drink cola (and if they're any kind of decent human being, that means Coke ;)

My drink of choice happens to be Black Cherry Fresca. Damn good stuff, and diet, too, though you'd never know it.

Mountain Dew looks and tastes as if somebody pissed in some Sprite. You can take my word for it or try it yourself...

I love Dr. Pepper, I don't love Mountain Dew, I also don't care who bought the rights to "Gaming Drink" either so this means nothing, but a chance to cheer for my favourite Pepsi product.

Lolz, Pepsi doesn't make DP, Coke does, and I'm almost positive Coke bought it from 7UP, along with Squirt.

Actually, Dr Pepper is independently made. They have deals with both Coke and Pepsi for distribution in different parts of the country which are mostly withering away as Coke and Pepsi market their own competing products.

I had actually thought it was a pepsi product, because it as distributed by them in Canada, I just read the Wikipedia entry, wow, that is pretty crazy, especially considering 7up and Dr Pepper are the same company, and I dislike 7up so much.
