Ubisoft seeks more game licenses
In light of Electronic Arts' attempt to buy Take Two, Ubisoft is looking to increase its portfolio by acquiring game licenses, according to CEO Yves Guillemot in an interview with Les Echos (via Forbes). We mentioned this in a previously post about a rumored EA acquisition of Ubisoft, but it's worth noting on its own. Said Guillemot, "The desire of EA to buy Take Two pushes us to go faster, to accelerate internal growth but also to look at acquisition opportunities." Of course, acquiring licenses wouldn't necessarily stop the shroud of EA to engulf the license's developer.

This is so dumb. Activision and EA have ruined the way companies look at video games and all we're going to end up with are franchises and "casual" games.

Whenever I see the word "ruined" in a comment, there's a spike on my hyperbole readings.
In other words, you doomsayers have ruined the word "ruined" for me...

He has a point the corperatization of gaming has decimated fun in most of modern gaming, its also lowered playable content and pushed cash in projects up to the upper esiloins of the industry.

I miss the Ubisoft that gave us Buck Bumble, Rayman, Tonic Trouble and Rocket: Robot on Wheels.
Granted they were just the publishers on two of those games, but at least those games had fun concepts and were original instead of what they seem to be seeking now.

in 3 yrs tops we will be stuck with 3 publishers not counting first party unless EA decides to buy Ubisoft by then. or if this does happen wall street will make them suffer bcuz of how big they are and sumone with modest amount of money will acquire a piece and build a true gaming empire lol

Where's that Heroes game? And the Lost one? What's happening with Splinter Cell: Conviction? Where's the next Beyond Good and Evil, Prince of Persia and XIII? They should complete the old before looking for the new.

BG&E definitely, at first they were saying they might not have the backing to do the second and third games, then I hear "we're starting planning on the second" but that was more than 6 months ago.
Pointz @ Feb 26th 2008 9:13PM
Yeah and don't you think it's ridiculous how they abandon good games. I've seen some really shoddy games get sequels.
I don't know what other licenses Ubi can get. Maybe they'll do that Sarah Connor thing or Bionic woman, i dunno.

Ubisoft should jump the wagon and aquire the 2KSports part of Take 2 - at least that would save NHL2k etc...
