Although a tip we received was specifically about Best Buy's trade-in program, it appears the service is actually provided by a company called Dealtree.com, which seeks to offer "fair value" for old electronics. For example, the trade-in price for a Gamecube in good condition is $25; if that seems acceptable all the customer has to do is print out the pre-paid shipping label, send it to the company and in seven business days it'll send a Best Buy gift card for the value of the trade-in.
Dealtree.com apparently provides its services to a variety of retailers. It appears trade-in values are universal as a very quick check using the same parameters on the Circuit City version yielded the same trade-in value as with Best Buy. A sterile alternative to eBay or Craigslist for those looking to unload old consoles.
[Thanks Michael]

Because they don't base their entire source of revenue on it.

How much can I get for a 360? Heck, I will throw in an HD-DVD add-on for free. I have an easier time selling used underwear than I do a used 360. =)

Hmm...DealTree also manages the Best Buy private auctions. That's where I got my PS3.

Well, they sell both new and referbished -- you just have to check the description.
I paid ~$400 after shipping for my 60GB PS3, when they were still at $600 retail, so I'd say it was worth it. It still works fine, but it is bit scratched up because the PS3's paint does a terrible job of highlighting scratches.
Some other ones were sold later for around $360~$380, new. Like any auction service, you can get some really good deals, and you can also find some pretty terrible ones.

You guys do know that dealtree is an auction company that auctions off all of Best buy's overstock and previously opened merchandise. It's an employee, friends and family auction that is invite only. I've been trying to snag a PS3 the last couple of days.
