Ironclad's Sins sells more than 100,000 in less than a month

The reason for the celebration? It turns out that the studio's debut 4X game, Sins of a Solar Empire, has sold more than 100,000 units since its release on February 4, making it the top selling PC game in North America for the week based on sales data compiled by Gamasutra. It's anyone's guess how long PC gamers' love affair with Ironclad's space epic will last, but for now at least it appears that in the kingdom of the keyboard and mouse number crunching and micromanagement are king.

Wow, would have thunk not having DRM would mean anything except 15 copies sold and 100,000 copies downloaded.
scary....
Psykoboy2 @ Feb 29th 2008 1:35AM
Oddly enough, "No DRM" is the name of the Evil Avatar Radio episode where we had the devs on the show.

DRM only pushes people to piracy when the game they bought legally won't run. I rip all the games I buy straight to a disc image, then I go looking for a no-CD crack so I can play the game. Having to hunt for a disc physically is alot more annoying than going to my Game ISOs folder.
Abscissa @ Feb 29th 2008 1:08AM
What's a "4X" strategy game?
Cole @ Feb 29th 2008 1:20AM
4x: Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate
Online FFAs are amazing in Sins because you can create trade agreements, cease-fires, or all out alliances, and then break them menacingly or keep them to finish the game as a team. The humanity element gives Sins a personality that is absolutely grand.
Vince @ Feb 29th 2008 1:25AM
game is addictive as hell.
fischju @ Feb 29th 2008 1:29AM
I loved GalCiv 1 and 2, this game is very simliar except real time. Both great games.
asha_man2k @ Feb 29th 2008 1:41AM
...It could easily have been more that!
I have been trying to get my hands on a copy since it's release, having pre-ordered the Collector's edition at a nearby EB games. I am very close to the manager there, and was present when she made to call too head office inquiring where their stock is.. turns out the district received less than 100 copies when it could easily have off-loaded 1000
JonFitt @ Feb 29th 2008 9:52AM
EB and Gamestop shouldn't even be able to call themselves PC games stores. Their stock is limited and poorly presented, it seems like an afterthought.
You should go to a GAME in the UK, now that's a PC games store. Shelves and shelves of everything from new releases to older games which are discounted. You can pretty much just think of a game and it'll be there.
I just wandered into Frys on the launch day to get my copy of Sins. $5 off too :)
Alexisonfire @ Feb 29th 2008 1:51AM
I think this is in no small part due to Penny Arcade's promotion of the game. Not saying it's a bad thing for a site with great influence to promote a game. If PA didn't do the same thing last year, I probably would never have fallen in love with Odin Sphere. Same deal with IGN and Zack & Wiki.
Now, these sites are doing this just to spread the word as to how awesome these games are. When they start doing that to just sell a game to you, then we have to start worrying.
Zamzoph @ Feb 29th 2008 1:53AM
I still don't like how the games are really long =(
JonFitt @ Feb 29th 2008 10:01AM
Well little Japanese girl, sometimes grownups like to play games which require an attention span longer than a puppy's.
Parasite*Evil @ Feb 29th 2008 1:55AM
I'm so glad this game is doing good, seeing as everyone I know has pirated this game. Out of the half dozen of my friends who have this game, I'm the ONLY one who actually bought it. It pisses me off seeing as it's a local studio that made this game.
seakae @ Feb 29th 2008 2:00AM
There are two PC games I've bought in the last month. Sam and Max: Season 1 and Sins. Man, both are so rad in their own right, I'm surprised my brain hasn't imploded.
Einhanderkiller @ Feb 29th 2008 2:05AM
I need to buy this game.
David @ Feb 29th 2008 2:17AM
My brother bought this game for himself. Needless to say, he hasn't been able to find his copy, and I've been extremely happy for the past month.
Shawn @ Feb 29th 2008 2:37AM
And I'm one of those 100k. This game is just simply, a great game. I haven't even gone online yet, just playing skirmishes with the AI, and there are so many scenarios to choose from, it never gets old. Although it might seem daunting at first, it's much easier to play once you get past the first hour, it all starts making sense and gets very addictive.
This should stay a best seller on PC for quite sometime.
SeriousKriss @ Feb 29th 2008 3:54AM
I bought it online from Stardock, only cost me 30€ :)
Now I just wish I had more time to play it...
Savok @ Feb 29th 2008 4:56AM
I just wish the fucking retail box would hurry the fuck up for Australia. I mean yeah I could buy it on Stardock but that's a lot of shit to download on Australia's not so wonderful dl caps.
Ted @ Feb 29th 2008 4:57AM
It probably helps that it isn't available in Europe yet. Since Europeans are (I could be wrong) bigger PC gamers than Americans, they might have had an impact. I live in the UK and I bought it through stardock and downloaded it.
ReddyBrek @ Feb 29th 2008 6:47AM
I'm loving this game! But I have to agree with Savok about the wait for the retail copy. I bought it before my brother by 10 mins and yet his copy arrived on Monday and there is still no sign of mine, wtf?
Don't really mind as the game is so engrossing, fully recommended for any RTS fans out there.
captain_duck @ Feb 29th 2008 8:12AM
And that for a game which lacks a singleplayer story mode
Guiguibob80 @ Mar 3rd 2008 8:41AM
I'm glad for once a game doesn't require you to buy a new PC to play it's doing well I wonder if there's a link ;).
jpelles @ Feb 29th 2008 11:33AM
It's got scenarios style stuff like Romance of the 3 kingdoms though. So it does have something.
Anyway it's important to note this is an indie game that is made by people who also don't believe in copy protection.
No hassle with stupid cd keys is a great thing.
Plus it is an RTS technically.
GreenReaper @ Feb 29th 2008 12:48PM
Not sure about Ironclad, but at Stardock, the team responsible for publishing game went out to Uno's last night. I think game developers have slightly less expensive tastes than you might imagine. :-)
You can buy a box directly from the Sins website. I do not know how long it takes to ship out internationally, though.
Roger @ Feb 29th 2008 1:00PM
Let me tell you. This game is very good. No, there isn't single player missions/story. But it's really deep and addictive.
Martez @ Feb 29th 2008 2:19PM
It looks kinda like Eve Online. If it's anything like Eve Online, I will buy it.
ogvor @ Feb 29th 2008 4:43PM
Good for them, I love the game and their Anti DRM stance is pro-consumer!
NekoMode @ Feb 29th 2008 6:55PM
Excellent! What is even more intriguing is with their pro-consumer anti-DRM stance they have made their game very open and it has a simply excellent budding modding community. I can't wait to see some of these mod projects come to completions. One of the reasons I bought the game 'cause by the time I get bored I know a nifty mod will come out to refresh everything and add even more replay ability.
Shiro @ Mar 1st 2008 10:32AM
I was dead-set on buying this game until my friend started raving about it. Oddly enough, he tried to convince me with the fact that the games easily lasted 8 hours or more.
Like I'd ever waste my life on an RTS that could take more than an hour or so. I'll just have to keep waiting for SC2.
Veko @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:57PM
I've yet to get a chance to give this game the time it deserves...well, my girlfriend (Joystiqers have those?!?) and I are fighting, and she's left for the day as a F-U to me, so I think I'll get to commit soem Sins today. :D
