Interesting.. well that leaves to doubt about this being ported over to the 360. It seems to me that this is a work of art.. and sometiems theories and ideal far suppass reality. But after what I'm hearing.. they're trying to do a lot with this.. There are uncompressed sound.. but I think that only make up a little of the over all problem.

I'm sure they'll figure it out.. while i wait, i'll quickly buy a PS3 for the beta test of the online game.

Nintendo and Microsoft fanboys on Joystiq...

I DENY YOUR REALITY AND SUBSITUTE MY OWN to every single other game site blog or otherwise. Only HERE on this blog do I see such made up BS.
Kojima CLEARLY stated many times that he was using a 50GB disc. Noone knows what audio or textures he had to compress on not compress. No one knows how big the levels are. And dont give me that crap about Oblivion.

CAN U SAY REPEATING TEXTURES? Ever notice how these wide open spaces are plain and boring?

My point? Here you go George...I will spell it out for you.

FUD...its just a 25gb disc
FUD2..its all that uncompressed audio
FUD3..its all that FMV
FUD4..hes lazy
FUD5..its an excuse to show that BD is needed
FUD6..this game could fit on a DVD9

should I keep going? All of the above are posted many times in the replys...ALL of them are unproven or simply NOT true.

got it now George?

I honestly believe this game could fit on 1 bluray if necessary. I think it's more a way of Kojima's wishful thinking. He probably considers any compression a sacrifice of quality, even though 99.99% of gamers wouldn't noticed the difference between compressed and uncompressed audio (which is what I believe is going on here). Therefore, by having to compress certain things, he is saying the disc is not "big enough" when actually, he is simply unwilling to compress.
Regardless, uncompressed audio or not, this should be a huge game, and I also think Kojima is trying to add to the hype that surrounds the game. 50G is not enough? Cue PS3 fanboys taunting 360 gamers months ahead of release and preorder sales going ballistic.

"Hey ladies... check this game out. Look at how big this game is.. and that's just compressed! Just wait until I 'unzip' it."

Oh Kojima.. you dirty little man.

Gonna have to blame redundant files again since it is clear that the audio is compressed, BluRay is just too slow a loader.

Just to counter the dumb shit that tried to tell me that BluRay is just as fast as a DVD player, the data read speed comparison only works for 9gb BluRay disks, which are the same size as a DVD player. A 50gb BluRay disk has 6 times more data to cover, so it has to be considerably faster just to equal a DVD's read times.

I bet you can divide the disk size by 4 and get it to work on the 360 with two disks just fine.

You lost all credibility when you said "9gb BluRay disk". :/

It probably takes up 50gb of space because of the Battletoads mini-game on it.

Dude, if this contained a new Battletoads game, I would totally get it. Rare used to kick so much ass.

Everything that I have read has stated that a single-layer BD-25 was used for MGS4.

lol, the last sentence on with variation of Snake was funny but true. I'm sure that they didn't compress much so it's taking a lot of spaces. I've read somewhere that they are now trying to see what can be compressed.

"Kojima explained that his team had to compress many elements of Metal Gear Solid 4 to make it fit in the disc."

They should compress ALL audio and video, at high quality. The PS3 can handle it, and you can't even notice the quality difference. It also takes less data so it can be read from the disc in less time.

I don't care if it's all compressed, or if it's 2 discs. Regardless of the price when the game comes out (which I can tell now will be a lot because of the discs), this game is worth it. Enough said.

And hopefully, this ends the whole "MGS4 will be ported to 360" rumour for good. No way in hell would that happen if this game takes up 50Gb.

Never underestimate the power of compression and optimization. Remember, they managed to get Resident Evil 2, cutscenes and all, on an N64 cart.

Obviously one (or or more) of three things is happening here:

A. They're using the well-known trick of duplicating their data a bunch of times to compensate for the drive's notoriously slow load times ("settle time", from what I gather?)

B. This is METAL GEAR SOLID. As much as I like the gameplay (what little there is between all the non-interactive crap), this fourth one is probably crammed with about three months worth of completely inane dialog and cutscenes. There's probably about three hours of mindless irrelevant yakking every time you take three steps. Kojima's probably compulsively adding random chatter just to fill up the space.

C. You've heard the idea that "The time a task requires tends to expand to fill the time available"? Well, it works for storage space, too. Knowing that they could use all that extra space on a BD if they wanted to caused them to not bother with even the simplest of compression techniques (no huffman encoding, probably not even a single instance of run-length encoding).

I say why not just release it on 2 discs? It has been done before and it wasn't that big of a deal.

But, I guess that would mean that "IF" this game ever comes to 360, it would have to be on about 10 discs.....

Won't bother me though as I do plan on getting a PS3 sometime this year.

Manufacturing costs. That is the reason they don't "just" put it on two blu-ray disks. I believe I read in an interview in which Kojima stated that they are indeed using a DL-BD.

Why spend all that extra money to have another blu-ray disk manufactured, when they can simply remove a couple things or features that are not significant. I really don't think Kojima would remove anything from his game that was significant and would make a difference in the final product.
