Amazon Japan sells 20GB PS3 for twice price of 40GB

The discontinuation of the PS2-playing 20 and 60 GB models of the PS3 have made them quite the hot item in Japan, so much so that Amazon Japan is currently selling 20 GB systems for ?63,800 ($617), around ?30,000 more than the 40GB system. 60 GB consoles are the priciest of all, currently selling for ?74,800 ($723). Hobby shops there are also apparently jacking up buyback prices, according to this blog (beware of NSFW ads).

Are we headed for a similar fate here in the states? No. Or at least, not immediately. With a mostly backwards compatible model already announced for June, it seems that that the folks who like to keep one foot in each generation aren't in danger of the chasm they straddle widening and swallowing them whole just yet.

So something that originally cost $500 or more "I don't know exchange rates", which was drop to $300-$400, now cost $800 for something they should all have. Something seems very wrong here.

Well GameStop has refurbished 20 and 40 for $349. I was thinking about getting the 20 for my brother but I still think $349 is high for refurbished a 20gb when Toysrus were selling new ones for $299.

Damn, I need to sell my 60GB to someone in Japan and then go out and buy the 80GB MGS4 model when it comes out.

I would get a better system, don't need 100% BC, a better controller and a game I was going to buy anyway and walk away with a couple hundred dollars profit.

My plans of buying a PS2 went out the window when they discontinued the b/c. Sorry Sony.

At this stage I'd probably be happier with a PS2. I hear it has more and better games.

Who WOULDN'T prefer a 60gb model? It's the best machine they have to offer.

Let 2008 finish before we start calling it 2002 Part 2. But as long as I'm at this PS3 comment orgy, my PSN is AsWater. I only play online regularly with CoD4.

Personally, I think the PS3 looks much better in all black.

I was hoping to buy a used 60 gig system when they got around 200 dollars. Now I'm not even sure if they'll ever get that low. Probably not for a long time.

I bought a 60GB recently from a guy that bought it for his grandfather. I must say that I am glad I did. 435 dollars for a 60GB PS3 plus 2 games...?? lol. Thanks ++++glist ;)

Uhhh. Correct me if I'm wrong, but for $617, couldn't you just buy a 40GB PS3 and a brand new PS2?

People are fucking stupid.

It matters because PS3 consumers shouldn't have to pay extra for a feature that:
1) Was in previous Revs of the machine
2) Sony promised to PS3 customers from Day 1
3) Was removed....ONLY to balance out the loss-leader of Blu-Ray Functionality which Sony forced on PS3 customers.

Why is this news?? Everyone knows the launch models are inherently better than the gimped versions now on stores shelves.

I think everyone should continue to complain about the lack of full Backwards Compatibility not to mention a true adapter to use PS2 controllers.

Why support SONY ripping you off and removing features that they promised all along. (Which is why I continue to complain about the general crappiness of the PSN & Playstation 3 online gaming!)

Early adopters did get rewarded for a change......now lets hope the disc loading mechanism doesn't implode like the laser on my PS2s and the general probs of my good old upside-down PS1s.
