Nega-review: God of War: Chains of Olympus

"The game feels a bit too familiar ... [and] at times you do feel like you've played the game before." (7) That said, "the game is missing some of the features from other God of War games. ... you won't find the ability to use your blades on grappling points, the Icarus Wings, Rage of the Gods, rope traversal, rope swinging, a fourth magic, etc." (4) "I find myself disappointed ... that the game doesn't quite have the same feeling of showing you something new around every corner that the previous games did." (4)
"The game is also brutally linear: you're constantly running from point A to point B, stopping to administer the occasional beatdown." (5) It could also be described as "a very linear experience, (3) that "may be a touch linear." (9) "Toward the end, combat got pretty repetitious, relying really heavily on the mechanic of blocking you into a room and not letting you out until you finished taking down the waves of enemies." (1) "It would have been nice to have seen a little experimentation here or there to mix things up. (3) "Altogether, ... the game feels like a bit less of an adventure and more of a straightforward action game." (4)
Control-wise, "the more intricate attack moves are simply lost to the somewhat 'floaty' control nub on the PSP. There are times that I'm sure I nailed a combo only to watch it come apart mid-attack." (8) "Kratos' rolling dodge... [is] still a little awkward," (6) and "some things, like accidentally setting off magic spells, can ... be off-setting." (2) "I didn't like ... the quick-time events requiring analog nub action ... that analog nub just can't measure up to an analog stick.." (1)
"The puzzles were for the most part a little too easy," (1) "very simple," (4) and "on the simple side." (9) No, the puzzles "aren't all that difficult by and large." (3) "They tend to either have obvious solutions or -- in a couple of cases -- be so obtuse that you'll spend hours just trying to figure out how to get out of one stupid room." (6) "There's a puzzle that's not particularly intuitive thanks to the fixed camera and lack of cues," (2) and "one -- which involved dragging around a lot of very heavy statues that were incredibly slow to move -- got downright irritating. (1)

As far as enemies, "if you can imagine lining up the creatures from previous installments and then mixing and matching their abilities a tad, you pretty much know what to expect." (3) "Towards the end of the game the developers increase the difficulty by forcing you to take on more enemies in a smaller space rather than introducing newer/harder enemies." (7) Put simply, "the enemies weren't as varied as before," (5) and "it would have been nice to have seen something a little more inventive here, even if it was only one wholly unique creature." (3)
"Playing through this title there is certainly something missing – bosses." (8) "I'm slightly disappointed with ... the short list of boss fights." (3) "The game could have used more unique boss fights and big memorable moments to put it on par with God of War I and II." (4) "While there are bosses punctuating the overall 'levels', there are few that are the size and scale of the large statue in God of War II, or Ares in the first God of War." (8)
"The game is a smaller overall package than we've come to expect from the series." (4) "The game is relatively short in length," (9) and "not as long as the console counterparts. (1) "The story is short ... between five and six hours the first time through," (4) or "probably seven or eight hours." (1) Either way, "it'll be a brief experience for the voraciously hardcore." (2) and "another level or two wouldn't have hurt." (6)

Otherwise, "there are a few more frustrating moments that take some patience to get through. (2) "The smaller screen cuts into some of the game's graphical prowess," and "there aren't as many neat-o fatality animations either." (5) "Enemy AI is a bit mixed in the game. ... I did have a few times when I could walk up to some of the archers without them attacking." (7) "There are a whole lot of unskippable cutscenes littered throughout the game ... we really don't need to see the same scenes play out again every time we're unlucky enough to die before the next checkpoint." (6) "The storyline ... isn't as strong as in previous games," (2) and "it isn't quite up to the par set by the other titles in terms of an expansive and cohesive storyline." (8)
Welcome, greek mythology fans, to the latest installment in Joystiq's Nega-review series. As always, this Nega-review takes the small, negative points from many overwhelmingly positive reviews and compiles them together into a horribly scathing whole. While positive context may have been removed from some excerpts, everything inside the quote marks was indeed intended as a negative in the original review.
While you might think it would be hard to put together a review for a game that many are calling the best PSP game ever made, it was surprisingly not that difficult. Reviewers tended to agree that the game's linearity, familiarity, and simplistic puzzles were the weakest points. Much of the small criticism of the game came largely in comparing it to the hugely successful PS2 versions -- perhaps an unfair standard for a PSP game, but one that shows just how high the title stands above others on the same system.

Add to the nega-review:
It sucks playing as someone paler than I am.
Laggy @ Mar 5th 2008 6:38AM
I thought he was a pasty fella too, only to realise it's body paint.

I think they're trying to tell us something! :D
T @ Mar 4th 2008 8:46AM
Even if you isolated the negative aspects...taking a look at it, that's almost the entire game.
It's too short, too linear, too easy, and too repetitive. Not to mention the controls sound clunky.
So why does this game get a 9.9999999?
Mills and Boom @ Mar 4th 2008 8:50AM
Because people are that desperate for the PSP to have a really good game.
From what I've played of the demo - it's horrendous. I'll be sticking with Patapon and PS1 games thx.
bm @ Mar 4th 2008 8:53AM
Because! Well... it's pretty! And it has a loud-mouthed developer! And it's on a platform that doesn't have many great killer apps. Perfectly valid reasons if you ask me.
FidliousWong (Oatmeal Defense Force) @ Mar 4th 2008 9:23AM
I wonder if people will still be calling the developer loudmouth when they drop Okami on Wii. Or if idiots are still associating Jaffe with GOW despite leaving the series 2 games ago....
jonondaspot @ Mar 4th 2008 11:16AM
It is exactly that Wong. I am amazed at the ignorance. People are so deperate to attack it that the frustration and anger of their Sony hatred causes them to forget simple facts. I was able to get my copy early and this morning I am blearied eyed having stayed up all night running it. Comments that would have us believe it is garnering high scores based on looks and lack of good PSP titles are infantile jealousy at best.
FidliousWong (Oatmeal Defense Force) @ Mar 4th 2008 12:14PM
that response had nothing to do with what I said
xFenixKnightx @ Mar 4th 2008 8:51AM
This game looks nice but I rarely have a chance to play handhelds these days. I'll wait for God of War III. It should be sick!
NATO_Duke @ Mar 4th 2008 9:44AM
Me either. My PSP just sits on a shelf most of the time.
xFenixKnightx @ Mar 4th 2008 9:49AM
Haha, I actually sold mine. I dont miss it either. I only have a DS now and dont play it much. Definatly rather be playing 360 or PS3.
J @ Mar 4th 2008 10:51AM
So, you guys don't take craps anymore? What's your secret?
xFenixKnightx @ Mar 4th 2008 11:22AM
Whaaaa?? I do take craps, but thats where I get all my knitting in.
;)
Grant @ Mar 4th 2008 11:31AM
toilets always a good time to call the parents and find out what they are up to this week.
besides, i'd be too afraid to drop my PSP in.
Dan S. @ Mar 4th 2008 8:58AM
So what's the point of doing this again?
Anticrawl @ Mar 4th 2008 9:24AM
Hrm, what's the point of you coming here and asking?
dark_inchworm @ Mar 4th 2008 9:27AM
To show that even titles that garner high scores have their weaker traits, and that no product is perfect.
Don't take this too seriously, though.
T3kNi9e @ Mar 4th 2008 9:22AM
Seriously, the game has always been this way and reviewers are not realizing it now.For example they criticize for being linear for having to go from point A to B and basically just beat em up until you meet an occasional boss. Thats what it has always been!
Not that im defending it, I just find alot of hypocracy. I personally did not find the game fun, infact I stopped after about 2 hours because it was just button mashing. But it takes a PSP sequel for them realize that what people liked about it was the animation, story, and cool looking combos. Personally thats the only things good IMO, overall opinion of the game is pretty low though.
RoboChamp @ Mar 4th 2008 9:23AM
Wow. You guys a tad cranky in the morning? Seriously, there are some PSP games that deserve bashing, but THIS? I've heard nothing but positive buzz, no idea where this hate came from.
dark_inchworm @ Mar 4th 2008 9:31AM
You are dumb.
Farseer (GDI) @ Mar 4th 2008 9:32AM
Joystiq is not bashing this game. They just gathered the negative points made by reviewers.
If you notice, by each point they make, there is a number. That number corresponds to the publication listed at the bottom of the article.
And, if you made it that far, at the bottom of the article, Kyle included:
"Welcome, greek mythology fans, to the latest installment in Joystiq's Nega-review series. As always, this Nega-review takes the small, negative points from many overwhelmingly positive reviews and compiles them together into a horribly scathing whole. Phranctoast @ Mar 4th 2008 9:41AM
He may be talking about all the people posting and not necessarily joystiq authors ya know...?
I use these posts as a litmus test as to which joystiq posters lose my respect as having any opinion on gaming.
NATO_Duke @ Mar 4th 2008 9:47AM
Except for the fact Phranctoast that there really hasn't been much bashing on the game by posters here. I think Robo simply didn't get the theme of the article.
Anticrawl @ Mar 4th 2008 9:59AM
Hrm, well I was hoping I'd be the one to gut him but it appears I'm to late. It's pretty clear he didn't understand this whole "nega-review" concept.
Phranctoast @ Mar 4th 2008 10:01AM
guess my mind reading talent has faded over the years.
RoboChamp @ Mar 4th 2008 12:07PM
Was talking about posters.
LeChuck @ Mar 4th 2008 10:41AM
Seems like the main complaint is it's too much like the previous games which were both huge hits so that's not much of a criticism. I haven't played CoO but judging by the first two I'm sure all the negative points are true. Which just proves that a game can be linear and repetitive but still a lot of fun if the core gameplay is good.
JimmyHACK @ Mar 4th 2008 10:53AM
Kinda like Brawl.. same old game overhyped...
still makes it a great game though... can't wait to play it this week is a good week for psp and wii
Geist @ Mar 4th 2008 1:28PM
I think the problem here is that nothing new is added. Like, at all. Same moves, moderately different spells, same characters, etc. Yeah, the game's fun, but I mean nothing changed.
Brawl, on the other hand, looks like it has a retarded amount of new content and a lot of new gameplay mechanics.
JimmyHACK @ Mar 4th 2008 1:37PM
Like I said.. Brawl new moves and new characters equates to God of War new magics new weapons new worlds and environments are like new stages.. but it's still the same old Sh*t...
then again same old Sh*t isn't bad when said Sh*t is GREAT.. ya know
Grant @ Mar 4th 2008 11:35AM
i played the demo and loved this game, but then again i only played the original, so i guess it will feel less repetitive to me.
despite the negative points the bring up and hype, at the end of the day this is a hand held game better than pretty much any out there.
RPore @ Mar 4th 2008 12:39PM
Can't wait for the Brawl Nega-Review.
StevenRafael @ Mar 4th 2008 1:14PM
Hopefully it'll have its fair share of "Roster should have included Character X".
I personally wanted to see Boo make an appearance.
Imagine playing as a fighter who could not be hit??? But you can only attack your opponents when they have their backs turned to you.
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Mar 4th 2008 1:04PM
i love these Nega-Reviews. no game is perfect and this just prepares everyone for the nuances that will probably annoy them when they play it, but they wont admit it because they were so hyped for it.
i havent picked it up yet since im a poor college student and it was either Brawl or GoW:CC this month. i am excited that the things they said are negative where always problems with the series anyway. of course you like to see new stuff but i can feel comfort in knowing that i will be getting a similar experience to the one im used to getting on the PS2. i didnt expect it to be as deep as its PS2 counterparts so im not really surprised there and the fact that the PSP is dammed powerful doesnt mean its as good as the PS2 so im not surprised that they cut out some of the animations and stuff. also, isnt this game supposed to take place before the events of the first two? so why would he have all of the equipment like the Icarus Wings and such if he gets them later on in the series? maybe im mistaken there but if not then that just knocks off more of their arguement.
either way, im pretty excited for GoW:CoO and cant wait til i have some surplus cash to go pick up that and Patapon.
Alien @ Mar 4th 2008 1:50PM
lol Good one ... I never thaught that youl make one for CoO to :D
Don-Don @ Mar 4th 2008 2:18PM
It'll probably be an amazing game for someone who hasn't played anything God of War (namely me), so all the comparisons to previous games shouldn't matter as much. And I'll be playing the games in chronological order, apparently.
Superstar90 @ Mar 4th 2008 10:47PM
I thought the game needed a 95+ to get a Nega-Review?
vdeogmer @ Mar 5th 2008 1:44AM
Augh, bee jesus, why must you sting me!?
