"With all the recent bru-ha-ha about Microsoft restructuring the XBLA royalty scheme"

I'm sorry Joystiq, but the more you try and get me to care about this, the less I do.

Well, I'm sure you care at least a tiny bit more than the people who won't even bother to comment.

True, I am probably the only person that will actually post a comment regarding the article instead of the cat. If that is true then maybe I care about this more than anyone else on here...

anyone even remotely interested in any creative/entertainment field should know these basics.

i'd be broke without this function.

Thanks for clearing up royalties. The description made me realize something: no console format allows the revenue of game sales to go directly to the parties responsible for said games. I understand it's the nature of business to prosper and profit from other people's efforts, but are there any examples in the console market where independent developers are free to have the lion's share of revenue go directly into their own pockets/future projects and not toward a publishers (in this case, Microsoft's) bottom line?

Furthermore, what are some typical royalty percentages? I've heard anecdotes of million-selling titles netting hundreds of thousands of dollars for the artist/developer and hundreds of millions for the publisher. Is this typical in video games (esp. direct download games) as well?

Lastly, how relevant is the royalty scheme regarding online content? The publisher has none of the same risks or overhead typical of shilling tangible product (no shipping, packaging, floor space, etc.)?

Really informative write-up. Thanks again.

im not sure what the statutory rates are for patents, or trademarks. or even non-dramatic works like game code or ips but for performace art works its 9.1 for every copy published or "pressed", however they word it. usually though most contracts only offer a 3/4 rate. so that means the author/writers get 50% of 3/4 of 9.1 cents usually while the publisher gets the other 50%. thats kinda a basic concept, and im sure the author of this article could expand and/or correct me.

oh and by "perfomance art" i mean music, films, TV shows, audio/visual works etc. non-dramatic would be like literary works, basically any writing thats not meant to be performed i believe. could be wrong though.
