'Free for All': Our favorite rap song about Smash Bros. Brawl
A question for you, dear reader: What is your favorite rap song about soon-to-be-released fighter Super Smash Bros. Brawl? ... Oh, really? That's interesting. We can't actually hear you, but you should know that unless you just answered "Free for All" by the rapping pride of West Virginia, The Covenauts, you are terrifyingly, heart-breakingly wrong.
Having been recorded before the game's character list was announced the song is a bit outdated now, but you know what's not outdated? That flow. Please, enjoy with our compliments, and just try to deny that there's a better song that involves lyrical acrobatics and battling Nintendo characters.

ApolloIV @ Mar 6th 2008 5:14PM
Not even Mc Forntsalot could help this.

"but you know what's not outdated? That flow"
that made me lol pretty hard.
Lol this is pretty funny, I don't know everyone is taking it so seriously. Oh wait I forgot, it's the internet.
markhill66 @ Mar 6th 2008 5:55PM
Yeah, don't take in so seriously. I acutally thought it was pretty sweet. Props to those guys for doing something different.
The song "Senior Thesis" is pretty good, too.
Mark @ Mar 6th 2008 5:36PM
Rough, but promising.
You can tell they're from West Virginia.
That's by-god-West-Virginia to you boy.

Come on guys lighten up...that was pretty decent....The line at the end about Crash Bandicot was priceless!
Dauragon88 @ Mar 6th 2008 6:02PM
lol Joystiq should know better than to make posts about rap music. Or post about any style of music that isn't Metallica before The Black Album.
It's like they WANT massive flame wars going on at all times.
Ken Seang @ Mar 6th 2008 6:03PM
Only white people would make such a song..
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Mar 6th 2008 6:35PM
I sense racial elitism here, as if a white person possessed a inherent characteristic which would make him inferior in rapping skills compared to anyone else who wasn't Caucasian, preferably black.
It's a problem of culture, not genetics.
Titus Miles @ Mar 6th 2008 9:42PM
LOL!! So true, I'm a brotha and this is terrible.

Well, as the apparent sole hip-hop fan in here (and possibly only black one), I will make an actually FAIR and UNBIASED comment about the song. It actually does suck. It's really amateur and sounds like it was made in a week. Not that I'm any pro or anything, but it's true. Plus, they sound more like the Beastie Boys when they first wake up and aren't awake enough to scream horribly. Plus the timing and flow needs work. The lyrics are kind of funny though.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Mar 6th 2008 6:36PM
Amen to that.
Toast @ Mar 6th 2008 6:48PM
Actually, it was made in one night. On a Karaoke Revolution mic. I'm the guy who did it, and it was the second song I ever did, and let me tell you, it is without a doubt crappy. It's something funny to look back on, though.

I'm working on a new rap about Smash that should actually be decent, recorded on nigh pro equipment. The song was never meant to be serious, so please don't take it as such. It was done in about two hours and as a joke-ish sort of thing. I only found out a few hours ago it was ending up here.
Never the less, it's pretty sweet that it did.
Peace, peeps

Anyone who says that songs sucks is a douche. It obviously wasn't intended to be great in terms of production. However, the lyrics and inflections of the words capture the spirit better than any Smash song I have heard thus far.
Furthermore, I CHALLENGE you Justin B to write a better song if you're so great! Heck, you don't even have to write a whole song. Just post one verse here on the thread about Smash and we'll see if it trumps what's posted above.
And no worries, we'll give a "fair and balanced" review =)
Yishai08 @ Mar 6th 2008 11:32PM
pssh, whatever you just dissed the beastie boys... lame!
Me3 @ Mar 7th 2008 1:54AM
"Well, as the apparent sole hip-hop fan in here (and possibly only black one), I will make an actually FAIR and UNBIASED comment about the song."
It amuses me to think that you believe that you can present a "FAIR and UNBIASED comment" in any fashion immediately after inferring that being black somehow makes you particularly qualified to do so.

Wow, this is pretty late, I'm not gonna lie, but whatever.
Well, first of all, I didn't say that I was able to make a fair and balanced judgment because I was black. That was just a parenthetical statement, as noted by the parentheses. I was saying so because I'm an actual fan of hip-hop, and the majority of commenters here were bashing both the song and teh genre. THAT'S why it would be fair and balanced.
Second, yeah, I can't make a good rap song worth two cents. Though it isn't like I posted any song that people could possibly judge my skills on or that would prove that I could. Or any song at all.
Third, sorry, Toast. If you guys were just messing around, I don't care. And the lyrics were pretty funny. But the initial impression was that it was serious, that's all. It's kinda funny, really.
