Yeah, it's a decent amount of content. I still wouldn't buy it though, because I'd just wait for the full release. There's plenty of other racing games to keep me occupied until then.

This "demo" has MORE content than 90% of the FULL racing games released. I will gladly support Kazunori Yamauchi by buying this game so that he can make the full release GT5 that much better.

I also hope this doesn't become a trend. The other thing that I'm wondering is how many kids and teenagers will think they are buying the full title? I'm sure there are plenty of kids who have no idea what "prologue" means or others that know what it means but think it is the prologue to GT 6 or something.

Truth be told, I'm more likely to blanket mark Fernando down than Ken.

Why? Well, because Krazy Ken does say stupid stuff, even wild fanboy rants. But they're more likely to actually be relevant to the article. Whereas Fernando is more likely to post statements like above or below where he just talks about himself or the others in the discussion. "Discussing the discussion" so to speak.

And that's the last I have to say on this since I'm doing the same thing I say I mark others down for.

I would bet that most racers out there do NOT have 60 cars with online racing, tuning, 6 tracks plus mirrors and so on.

I have played many racers over the years and trust me when I say this...NONE of them compare in content to the GT series. Prologue or otherwise.

I do not have the time to look up all the racing games released but if you do be my guest. Just to name a few...
Ridge Racer
N4S
Nascar
Mario Kart
other Cart racing games
Burnout
Sega Rally
Colin McRae
Motorstorm
Rally Sport
those are just off the top of my head and ALL of them typically contain LESS than the GT5 Prologue that will launch next month.

So you say Ken - others would argue that content is more than what you define content as. As always, if its a Sony game then its the only one that could be the best, so you are pointless to argue with. Yet, lets point out a few things:

Burnout revenge had 169 events in it. Does that count as content? No, cause its not GT. It had 8 "tracks" in it - but thats not content either right? Right. RR7 had 22 course and mirrors. RR6 had 130 cars in it. The new Mario Kart has 32 tracks. Forza 2 had over 300 cars in it and 14 tracks. These are examples. (Not a complete list.)

See, your argument that 90% of games have less content is just your opinion based on what you want to believe - not on the truth.

Kaz, did you forget or intentionally leave out Forza? Because if any game is a GT killer, it's that beauty, it's got online racing, customization, the works.

Also, some of the games on your list are dumb. Arcade titles are meant to be fun, not customizable out the ass.

Okay, finally, I'm a big fan of Gran Turismo, but this demo just seems like a justification for them to endlessly delay the game like they did with 4. Which sucks because there's no way in hell I'll ever pay for a half-finished game, no matter how much comes in that half.

Yes some games have more tracks...others maybe more cars, my point was that OVERALL when you count everything that the game has, the GT5 Prologue has just as much or more.

Hey, to each his own. I am quite fond of the Burnout series as I am the N4S series. I just do not understand the constant NEED for some people to bash the PS3.

I do not think Sony is perfect...far from it. It just turns out that for me since 1995 the Playstation brand has given me the most bang for the buck along with the most diverse gaming library.

Sony is finally getting their shit together, they did the same thing with the PS2. 2008 is shaping up to be a very good year for the Playstation brand and the constant bashing on this site (mostly from posts not stories) just looks more and more pathetic.

Polyphony digital does this with every Gran Turismo game. they usually release a demo type game with a Prologue or Concept name on it or even just Demo. 60 cars and 6 tracks are very respectable but even as a fan of the series, i dont think ill buy it because if you judge 60 cars and 6 tracks by the number of cars and tracks the full version will have, it seems like a rip off almost. if i see this in Blockbuster or something, ill probably give it a try (hell i still play the Gran Turismo HD demo from time to time) but i can justify paying $40 for it no matter how bad i want a new Gran Turismo game.

and Ken, shut up. ima Playstation fan to the end and i love your passion for anything Playstation but you really do get annoying with your misguided and oft ill informed rants.

Not bashing or anything... There's only certain fun you can have with car simulators... and I'm not speaking just Gran Turismo, also Forza... they are kind of boring.

It's not my type of game... I prefer anyday Burnout over Gran Turismo...

Just my opinion... I'm not bashing Gran Turismo Prologue.

I agree but GT always has different skill challenges that you can do to unlock stuff or different car classes that you have to acquire for specific races. This makes it more interesting and kind of reminds me of COD4 online. It really amazes me how people get 100% completion rates though as I find it to be pretty darn hard.

Fernandos, I am just guessing here but I would venture to guess that ANY Playstation3 game is NOT your type of game.

I'm sort of with Fernando on this one. I'll buy a "serious" racing game once every few years. I hate Gran Turismo's license system though.

But give me a fun arcade racer and I'll play forever. Currently (STILL) playing Ridge Racer 7 and Burnout Paradise...

Both genres have a lot going for them. The original Gran Turismo and the original Super Mario Kart were both stunning achievements in game design.

Sheppy does have a point on longevity. If I was going to reach for one of those titles to play right this minute, it would probable be the Kart.

There are only 5 Mario Kart titles... just one per system. Only 5 games since 1992, 16 years ago.

I don't really think there is a matter of it being a love for one game over the other but more like my limited time gaming and how quickly I want to get to the fun.

Let's put it this way. No matter what car you pick in Ridge Racer, it basically stands in three different types, Mild, Standand and Dynamic. The rest is just top speeds. While I enjoy "owning" a certain car and customizing it, the ability to jump directly into a race without really having to think it out is the great aspect of an arcade racer. I can hit and S curve at 180 drifting with ease. Same with Mario Kart or Burnout.

On Forza 2, however, I could buy a car and suddenly have to spend a few races coming to grips with the dramatic differences, even between different types of the same car model. Or if the car doesn't fit my styl;e at all, I can customize the car to fit my style. In Forza 2, there is no simple racing for the sake of racing. Hell, Forza 2 is the first game I EVER let play itself just to farm money....

Im with Fernando 100% on this, vote me down like if that matters lol. Gran Turismo, Forza and the likes are fucking boooooring. "Real" doesnt always = fun here guys. Ill take Burnout Paradise, Riiiiiiidge Rrrrrracer and Mario Kart over those. Actually Id take Mario Kart over any racer PERIOD. Tell me what other racing game can be as much fun as MarioKart?

I agree more real isn't always more fun. I play GTR2, I can't even get my closest friends (who also play GT) to play it with me. I for some reason like learning to nurse a car out of a gravel trap with the clutch half out and they don't. I like heel-toe downshifting and they find it bothersome.

I can understand why some people don't like hardcore racing sims. The essence of auto racing is doing the exact same thing over and over. Find the line, drive it perfectly until you need to pit. A lot of people don't find that fun.

Developers could improve their racing games to have some storyline to them. This would draw in more players. And add various challenges and such. TOCA Race Driver does some of this. There's no shame in adding a little icing on the cake to attract more players.

$40 is an insane price. Demos are free, this demo has more content then most, but does it have 2/3 of the full game? If it's 2/3 the price then it should have 2/3 the game. The most this should be is $20. I'm interested to see how much this sells.

You're right. It's not really a demo. It's more like complete bullshit.

Can you imagine if other game makers took this approach?

What if it became standard practice for publishers that, halfway through the development cycle, you polish what you have, and release it as a $40 'preview' to tide you over for the full release, and then charge $60 for that?

You realize it takes resources to develop and publish this Prologue? And some of those resources could have been used on the full game?

This is the worse than the MGS4 approach, of taking the game's multiplayer component and selling it in a separate retail package.

You'll get about five minutes to read this before the fanboys mod this down to a half-heart, but fair minded people who think about this know it is true.

Copa, you're right, of course, but you act as if Sony is the only publisher and PS3 is the only platform trying to run a business and make some money. It costs more to develop games this generation and in all honesty, we're probably not paying a proportionally higher amount with the extra $10 "hi-def premium" we're charged. Publishers, developers and manufacturers alike are trying to find new streams of revenue; that's why we're seeing Sony selling demos and Konami selling multiplayer separately. Yes, they're guilty. But what about Microsoft and their Points system, that you'll rarely have a balance of zero on, essentially giving them an interest-free loan? What about their pay-to-play online policy? What about Nintendo and their sales of "peripherals" that are nothing but a hunk of plastic? What about their re-selling of 15 year old games that you already own?

"Let he who has no sinned cast the first stone," and you, being such a Microsoft zealot, are certainly not qualified to do so.

I think Curtis the Claw is right on. If you buy this game and then buy the full game you're buying the same cars and tracks twice. The only way this would make sense, if the full game was discounted if you have Prologue or if you received extra/bonus material. It looks very tempting, but once you buy GT5 you'll realized that you are re-buying everything you purchased in Prologue.

Exactly! I mean really, what are you going to do with this after the full game comes out? This will never enter your PS3 once you own the real thing which will make this completely worthless. My guess is you'll be able to get this on ebay for $5 after the game comes out.

If there are blog entries about any of these subjects, I'm happy to offer my honest opinions about them. But this entry is about a paid preview build. I think it sucks, and I think it's important to speak out about, just like Horse Armor, because it represents a dangerous precedent.

This is nothing new. The first time I can think of a developer deciding it would take too long to finish the game and thus selling it unfinished and then finished later is the 80s-era arcade game "Gauntlet". Gauntlet II was actually the game they were making, Gauntlet (I) was released because the time of the year when new games was coming by and they wanted something out.

Okay, so that's a little obscure. But the 2nd significant time I can think of it is a LOT more significant. A little game called Doom I and II. Doom I was a shareware game, it was cheaper and contained a few levels. Doom II was sold at retail, and was just more levels for the Doom engine. If you bought Doom I and then Doom II, you were largely wasting your money. Quake and Quake 2 was the same to a lesser extent.

Halo 1 was supposed to contain a lot more story, but this was cut when they had to ship on launch day for Xbox (which was wise). It also was supposed to contain online play, but this was cut, like in GT4, although in the case of Halo it was because MS barred online play for games outside of Live and Live wasn't going to be ready for a year.

So perhaps it's best not get over excited about how this is going to bring about the end of gaming as we know it, or that Sony is inventing a new way to screw the customer. Just don't buy it if you don't agree with what DP is doing. That's how the free market works.

So... wait... is someone forcing you to buy Prologue?

Honestly though, I do think the price is a rip-off. I'm not against the concept of a Prologue, but I think price paid should, at least in part, be taken off the price of the full retail game. Either that or it needs to priced at $10 or less. But much like Nintendo charging way too much for VC games that cost them virtually nothing to offer, they charge that much because they can apparently get away with it. And also like Nintendo's VC games, I won't be buying Prologue.
