GameStop holding Smash Bros. Brawl tournament, midnight launch events
GameStop announced today that it will hold Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments and midnight launches this Saturday at 2,500 of its stores. The single-elimination tournaments will begin at 10PM (local time), but contestants are asked to check with their store for exact time and must be there 30 minutes before the event.
Winners of the local GameStop store SSBB tournaments will continue up a chain, with a few more qualifying rounds, leading to the finals on April 12 in San Jose, CA. The last brawler standing will receive an LCD-TV (that's what the release says, but the flyer after the break says plasma), a Wii console plus accessories, "an entire Nintendo Wii Software Library" and $5,000 in cash. The second and third place finishers will receive a gift card, and will likely be asked if they'd like to pre-order any games.

Mmmmm... Be sure and stretch those muscley arms before you play your game, kids! Afterwards we can all go back to my place for popsicles.
xeleion @ Mar 6th 2008 2:25PM
I'm using a customized Wiimote + Nunchuk configuration right now, and it works better than the GC Controller for one reason alone: digital shield buttons.
mksolo @ Mar 6th 2008 1:25PM
great use of family pictures. tournament sounds kool.
Mrblonde @ Mar 6th 2008 1:25PM
I would go to this, but im gonna be at a party and I have my copy reserved at circuit city for the $10 gift card offer so i can use it to get a cube controller
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 6th 2008 1:31PM
Same here... but with the $10 gift card I will pick Zack & Wiki (I already have four Wavebirds) =p
Mrblonde @ Mar 6th 2008 1:35PM
I sold the two i had when i sold my cube a long while back. I will try the other control schemes, but the cube one i think will be the one im best with. Wish wavebirds were still in production

Ha Ha ...Pedophiles.
(Pedophilia is not funny but that picture is great)
Mrblonde @ Mar 6th 2008 1:30PM
What makes it better is that you have the guy from To Catch A Predator as your avatar

You missed the opportunity to say:
"Have a seat."

On the contrary, pedophilia is very funny indeed.

Heh, that reminds me of that troll AzN1080p
Bigger Sony troll than KillKenMarrymeMario.
Those were good times. Good times...

Seriously Joystiq/Joystiq readers, out there in the real world there are many real victims of child abuse. Making light of such things is truly distasteful.
We can only hope that all children can have the happy, healthy childhoods you have had. But spare a thought for those who have suffered.
Let's keep to a discussion about games and help create a better world where child abuse is not a joke.

Awesome, if you win it all you could sell the plasma, since the Wii doesn't have HD. You keep the 3 good wii games out of the collection and sell the rest and end up with quiet alot of cash.
Zertoss @ Mar 6th 2008 1:32PM
Or you could trade that crappy prasma for a quality LCD TV.
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 6th 2008 1:33PM
Do you have an HDTV? And if you do... did you sold all of your past systems?
DigTheDoug @ Mar 6th 2008 1:52PM
I don't like something so you shouldn't either.
Intentless @ Mar 6th 2008 1:30PM
I'm thinking about it... I'm an unstoppable force in my circle of friends but I don't want to be absolutely destroyed by some little kid...
Martez @ Mar 6th 2008 1:35PM
"an entire Nintendo Wii Software Library"
So... this is incentive?
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 6th 2008 1:41PM
Yes, specially if the library includes the second best rated game in the history of videogames (Super Mario Galaxy), the game with the best control for a console FPS (Metroid Prime 3), and one of the best fighters ever created (SSBB).
Martez @ Mar 6th 2008 1:43PM
Dude, you really need to be less defensive.
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 6th 2008 1:45PM
=p
The BPM Scrolls IV: Knights of the Nine @ Mar 6th 2008 1:53PM
I think everyone needs to be less offensive AND defensive.
Neutrality FTW.
Martez @ Mar 6th 2008 1:55PM
HEY, SCREW YOU!
samfish @ Mar 6th 2008 2:00PM
Tell my wife...I said "Hello".
Rususeruru @ Mar 6th 2008 2:08PM
We're at terror level beige.
Futurama references FTW!
ballistic3188 @ Mar 6th 2008 2:19PM
I hate these filthy neutrals. With enemies, you know where they stand, but with neutrals—who knows. It sickens me
zelderman @ Mar 6th 2008 3:05PM
Futurama on Adult Swim = Win
Futurama on Comedy Central = Fail
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Mar 6th 2008 3:23PM
I really wish they made more Futurama. =(
Korova @ Mar 7th 2008 8:48AM
You will get more Petz games than you can shake a mote at.
They will load the library into you car with a Nintendo brand shovel accessory
Bucket @ Mar 6th 2008 1:37PM
Don't want to hurt yourselves playing video games. Make sure you stretch out those creamy hamstrings!
NATO_Duke @ Mar 6th 2008 1:41PM
Though the picture scares me from going - the prise package sounds pretty damn nice.
Mr.ESC @ Mar 6th 2008 2:29PM
Just don't walk into any strnager's Van even if they offer you free candy.
HighFiveJesus @ Mar 6th 2008 1:43PM
uhh yeah do you sell any vans that have nintendo characters on them, and has been tricked out to look like an ice cream truck..mmm
Intentless @ Mar 6th 2008 1:45PM
Dude that is gold... Gotta call my guy now...
In all seriousness that would be awesome...
Zertoss @ Mar 6th 2008 1:48PM
It should play a fun tune for the kids!

D_Average @ Mar 6th 2008 1:51PM
Hopefully they have a kart tournament too, I suck at smash, going to skip this one.
The BPM Scrolls IV: Knights of the Nine @ Mar 6th 2008 1:53PM
That picture reminds me why I'm glad I'm 22.
AstroCreep @ Mar 6th 2008 1:56PM
You guys read the fine print about the tournament? You CAN NOT use your own controller. That blows.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 6th 2008 2:42PM
No, thats fair.
(01) @ Mar 7th 2008 5:44PM
It's fair, but it still sucks...At least everyone should be at around the same level with the controls.
Donald @ Mar 6th 2008 1:56PM
"The second and third place finishers will receive a gift card, and will likely be asked if they'd like to pre-order any games."
Oh, TAG.
Though they're more likely to ask if they want to trade in any copies of that Smash Brothers game that just came out.
Dio @ Mar 6th 2008 2:05PM
So how exactly do they decide to send just EIGHT players to the final location? Are ranks decided by points? There are just too many stores even for round 3.
And yeah, I'll be going to the Gamestop a block from house even though it's likely that the top 8 are going to be people who have already intensively played Brawl when it first came out =/
scotty @ Mar 6th 2008 2:11PM
Brawl isn't out yet in the US, so I doubt there's a very large group of people who have "played it intensively". They are even making everyone use the Wii-mote, so there's no huge advantage for huge GC SSB players.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 6th 2008 2:34PM
They decide the final 8 by regions. Each region champ gets sent to national competition.
