GameStop announced today that it will hold Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments and midnight launches this Saturday at 2,500 of its stores. The single-elimination tournaments will begin at 10PM (local time), but contestants are asked to check with their store for exact time and must be there 30 minutes before the event.
Winners of the local GameStop store SSBB tournaments will continue up a chain, with a few more qualifying rounds, leading to the finals on April 12 in San Jose, CA. The last brawler standing will receive an LCD-TV (that's what the release says, but the flyer after the break says plasma), a Wii console plus accessories, "an entire Nintendo Wii Software Library" and $5,000 in cash. The second and third place finishers will receive a gift card, and will likely be asked if they'd like to pre-order any games.

Picture is great. "The second and third place finishers will receive a gift card, and will likely be asked if they'd like to pre-order any games." is just hilarious.

The whole concept of people playing import copies to 'prepare' for the tournament kind of breaks it for everyone. It ensures that only those who went through the hurdles to play it before it's official release get the glorious cash/prizes.

I guess you could always take the Nintendo Wii Library and sale it on eBay... because we know anyone with any taste wouldn't actually want to play most of the games in the library.

You are correct sir. Bender and Zoidberg over Stewie and Brian any day. I'm surprised not more midnight releases of titles with multiplayer gameplay haven't done tournaments.

this kind of reminds me of the time when (noun-famous person) showed up for (noun-event)
cut to scene of said famous person doing something completely unexpected or politically incorrect at said event.

One reason why this tourney sucks:
Finals are in Cali, and I BET they won't pay your travel fair.

Um they said they would fly the winners to the location of the finals, so yeah they will pay your fare, but I wouldn't want to fly anyways. Flying is terrible nowadays to say the least!

Main issue I have with this comp, doesn't seem to be anything up for store winners. I remember the World Videogame Tournament sponsored by Blockbuster. Two years in a row, I was store champion (regionals always kicked my ass.... fucking NBA Jam... but at least I got a free day at Six Flags out of it) and always got a free $50+ game out of it. I remember taking the $90 copy of Virtua Racing to Toys R Us for in store credit...
Here's the saddest part, sucked at sports games but I was one of the few who actually managed to beat the first level in Judge Dredd in the time limit AND snag three chaos emeralds on Sonic 3. In other words, my store scores were massive above the comp... but I did so suck at sports games...

I'll probably hit up the midnight event, but damned if I'm going to be next to the 10 year old who kicks my ass at Smash Brothers in a tourney.

Lame @ no Milwaukee tourneys. They must not want kids running around the crime-ridden city at midnight.

it can't be as bad as driving 2500 miles there, then another 2500 back after getting your ass handed to you by lil poison
