Financial Times reports that "Sony is in talks with console rival Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360." This is the first time we've heard any concrete details regarding such a move, though Microsoft has long suggested that adopting Blu-ray was a possibility. As early as CES 2006, in January of that year, Peter Moore said that Microsoft could release an external Blu-ray player if that format proved victorious (which it did); at CES this year, Microsoft's Albert Penello said adopting Blu-ray was "something [they'll] have to consider" if "consumer choice" demands it.
So when Sony Electronics US president Stan Glasgow says Sony and Microsoft are chatting Blu-ray, it's really not a surprise but an update. That said, Mr. Glasgow also mentioned talks with Apple, who has yet to offer a Blu-ray drive in any of its products and is (like Microsoft) focusing on digital downloadable content. We doubt Microsoft would release an internal Blu-ray drive, but an external drive seems like a safe bet in keeping with their HD media strategy.

PS3 is still cheaper especially getting both to same specs
60 GB PS3 vs Elite
360 Elite $449.00-$479.00
Microsoft Wireless headset is $49.99
Microsoft Wi-Fi is $100.00
Microsoft 2nd controller and charge kit is $69.99
Live $39.99 - $49.99 (depending on deal)
LOW $710 HIGH $750
60 GB PS3 $399.99
PS3 bluetooth headset as little as $19.99 (motorola)
HDMI cables as low as $6.99 High as $99.99
120 GB hard drive for PS3 $40.00 (Western Digital)
PS3 6-Axis Controller $39.95
PS3 USB Charger $4.99 (multiple brands)
LOW $610.00 HIGH $703.00
You can easily see this comparison is to get the systems to the same SPEC. It could be argued that the PS3 does not need an extra 60 GB and the 360 does not need a wireless headset. But simple comparisons can make them close to even or make the PS3 cheaper. The only way the 360 is cheaper is if you do not buy extras like the wi-fi adapter and Live. The elite + Live = 60 GB PS3 with free PSN. I think the biggest difference is the PS3 allows users to pick and choose components and not forcing users to have to use console specific extras like the 360. This does not take into account a simple extended warranty for the 360 from the store to guarantee not getting a refurb from the repair process when it eventually breaks down. You have a 1/3 chance (I have had a total of 6 RROD 360's all fixed by Microsoft. Now they give out free 1 month Live cards for repaired consoles).
So you can really go either way with these comparisons and in all honesty it is not impossible to find new and used 60 GB PS3 consoles. But, its certainly harder than finding an Elite. No amount of money can make the 360 play all original X-Box titles.
Just thought I would throw the comparison out there.
Not a fanboy of any console and I own all 3 new consoles. Just playing devils advocate.

McPoop, why are you using the 60GB version for your comparison? Also, why are you including a wireless headset for the 360? It comes with a headset, why does it need to be wireless it it hooks up to your wireless controller?

This is odd news. Odd news because If Microsoft wants a blu-ray drive for their 360, they should be talking with the BDA on a whole, and not mearly one of its members (sony)

Sometimes I think writers for blog or news sites just like to make shit up to start a fight or sound important

I call bullshit. Sony doesn't really have final say in the matter so why would they be in talks with them? They don't own the technology. If it did happen, fanboys would go nuts and the 360 will end up beating the PS3 to death with it's own technology.

Sony owns multiple Blu Ray patents related to the coating and DRM protections and not to mention component manufacturing of BD drives and parts. Also, Sony co-founded and co-created the Blu-Ray technology and sits a top the BDA board of directors (hint). Not to mention Sony owns multiple Blu-Ray pressing plants.
Let me get this straight .....
If Blu Ray fails then its another failed Sony proprietary format (beta-max)
Now that Blu is the leader Sony has no say in it
If you think Sony is not in on the negotiations for the 360 having the ability to have an external BD drive then I have a bridge to sell you. Sony has the big fat veto stick. I would presume they wold rather have Microsoft sell Blu-Ray players and disc's than worry about PS3 canabalizing.
Sony certainly holds the last word here regardless of what anyone says and any reasonable person knows this is their baby.

Don't you think its funny in one sentence you say Sony does not own the technology but later you assert Microsoft would beat Sony with their own technology?
What kind of sense is that man?

@John McPoop
This is the main problem. Those other things are meaningless to me. It seems as if when the games are sub par or few to select from, everyone starts talking about the other things you can do with the machine which is extremely sad.
I don't want to fight cancer, search for aliens, blackholes or whatever with my PS3, keep good games pouring like they did with PS2 and PS1, who gives a shit if it can run linux, my old original Xbox did that, whoopteedoo.
