NIS wastes little time, announces Disgaea DS for North America
Before the ink even had time to dry on the game's announcement for Japan, NIS America this afternoon confirmed plans to bring the Nintendo DS version of its popular turn-based strategy series Disgaea to North America this summer. While lacking a colorful title beyond the presumably tentative Disgaea DS, the game is nonetheless described as simply "a new edition" of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness.NIS America promises "several key improvements" over 2003's PlayStation 2 original. However, the announcement also confirms our grumblings from earlier this week regarding the game being just another pass at the first game rather than a wholly new tactical strategy adventure, much like last year's Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness for the PSP. Even so, given that the DS is practically tailor made for games of this type, Disgaea in any form feels like a natural fit for Nintendo's portable. We just hope the battery can hold out while we grind to level 9999.

I've never had a PS2, so I'm actually happy to be given a chance to play this game that I have heard only good things about.

I have a PS2 but I don't want to pay for the game as rare as it is, and I like the idea of playing the game in spurts on the DS and on the go.

So it is using the PS3 Disgaea resources.

Looks so cramped compared to the PSP port. But at least now DS owners will finally get to enjoy Disgaea.

Extremely disappointing. I already played this game for 250 hours. Four years ago.

Loved it on my PS2 back in 2003, loved it again four years later on the PSP. How will this DS port be different from the PSP one? Is it a port with extras or a whole new game?

I REALLY have no excuse to miss out now.
How do you even pronounce the title's name?
Geist @ Mar 8th 2008 12:19AM
I find that Dis-Guy-Ah is the agreed-upon pronouncement.
Geist @ Mar 8th 2008 12:18AM
OH GOD YES
UNNNNNNHHHHHHHHHHH
Geist @ Mar 8th 2008 12:25AM
That is, I've been looking to play this game portably for a long time, but do not wish to purchase a PSP.

I don't know if I would say the DS is tailor made for this game, it plays pretty damn well with the D-Pad.
I would assume that the reason they are remaking the first one is because its so much smaller then the second. Disgaea 1 is really a PS1 game... which made it perfect for PSP/DS generation (I think it was on a CD for PS2).
I played it on PS1 and now own it on PSP. I won't be getting it for DS because I already have it, but for those of you with both DS and PSP I would go with the PSP version. But if you don't have a PSP get the DS one, or skip ahead to Disgaea 2 on PS2 because its miles ahead of Disgaea 1 (graphics and gameplay).

God, I'd hate to see what they cut out. The ISO of the psp version is around 950 megs. That's an awful lot of cartridges. :(
Draco @ Mar 9th 2008 10:49AM
They will probably cut out the voice acting. I'm sure that accounts for alot of it.
hvnlysoldr @ Mar 13th 2008 2:59AM
If it's as accessible as FFTA I'll take a look.
