The Bourne Conspiracy trailer looks surprisingly rad
We've got a pretty hard and fast rule when it comes to movie-based-games: "Avoid them like a two-month-old bubonic plague sandwich." It's usually easy to follow, but sometimes, totally rad trailers come along and shake our resolve. Take, for instance, this demonstration for The Bourne Conspiracy. We're aware that the odds are in favor of the game being a hastily crafted Syphon Filter clone, but that doesn't make this trailer any less exhilarating. Somehow, our apprehension towards a game just fades away when it features the ability to bludgeon a man to death with literature.
Watch the trailer with an open mind, you might dig it as well -- just try not to hold the video's awkward narration against it. Don LaFontaine this guy ain't.

Fantastic.

Meh, looks like crap
HalaMadrid!!! @ Mar 8th 2008 9:43PM
Damn good gameplay system. I'm fucking Matt Damon
Liam @ Mar 9th 2008 8:04AM
Needs more old-style mini.
Hamza @ Mar 9th 2008 11:39AM
Honestly, it doesn't look THAT exhilarating.
I DeX I @ Mar 9th 2008 12:29PM
Animation looks a little stiff. Other than that it looks pretty awesome.
bigsofty @ Mar 9th 2008 4:20PM
Grey... um,with grey streets, grey faded outfits and a nice grey fog, is that a grey filter?
upz @ Mar 10th 2008 1:05AM
The hand-to-hand looks rather stunning, but we'll have to see how much of that is actually real time user controlled versus press-one-button-and-watch-the-guy-do-some-cool-stuff.
Also, after playing Uncharted, it looks awkward as hell watching the character not flinch when bullets whizz by his head while taking cover.
Adorada @ Mar 8th 2008 7:24PM
Heh, looks like it could be a decent game, It looks too much like stranglehold (as far as the shooting goes). I want gameplay footage rather than a trailer because stranglehold looked good when the trailer hit but failed terribly.
wickedpheonix @ Mar 9th 2008 9:15AM
Dude, that's supposed to be gameplay footage (minus HUD etc)
That is seriously, though, one of the BEST trailers I've seen. Damn I want this game... (let's see, R6V2 this month, then GTA4 next month, then Battlefield Bad Company in May... got a nice load of console gaming ahead of me (don't trust Ubi with PC gaming after the shitfest that was R6V1 on the PC))
Luka M. @ Mar 9th 2008 9:28AM
I think that Stranglehold was one of the best action games. I loved it.
Tango Charlie @ Mar 8th 2008 7:28PM
Was that bad modeling/texturing? Or were they just not allowed to use Matt Damon's likeness?
Also, the hand-to-hand looks too well-animated to not be quicktime-event stuff. *Sigh*.
DangerMouse @ Mar 8th 2008 7:32PM
"Was that bad modeling/texturing? Or were they just not allowed to use Matt Damon's likeness? "
Probably both.
It doesn't look that great. Not sure why he grabbed the book, i'd grabbed the microwave in the back. Then again, that probably wasn't on there "any object" list.
Mabui @ Mar 8th 2008 8:10PM
I seen a talk with a the developer on this game, they really wanted to distance themselves somewhat from the actual movie, even the movies themselves might continue with someone else taking the helm (James Bond like).
There are some sequences where I wonder if they'll fuck it up, quick time events fall into that category. It looks sorta cool, and very ambitious, who knows if they will pull it all off in a good way.
HalaMadrid!!! @ Mar 8th 2008 9:52PM
it looks like its runnig on the PS3 at 720p
jdeuel @ Mar 9th 2008 3:08AM
it's based on the book, not the movie
kinda like the davinchi code game, but less suck.
Dan @ Mar 9th 2008 6:26AM
The guy in the book is older than matt damon, with dark hair, So I'd have to agree that that's probably who they based it on.
Looks good, and some scenes have really nice graphics, but then, others look like low-grade PS2 graphics, like the car chase - you can see the textures not meshing together properly.
Snipermike @ Mar 8th 2008 7:29PM
3rd person camera + Matt Damon's head = "I can't see shit"
LaughingTarget @ Mar 9th 2008 7:04AM
Overheard in N. Korea:
"MATT DAMON!"
epsilon343 @ Mar 8th 2008 7:30PM
Doesn't feel like Bourne. I know it's not based on the movies but when I read the first book I don't remember huge shoot outs or anything like that every five minutes. It seems like a more wide open game would do it better, along the lines of Assassin's Creed or something where you've got a target but you decide how you're going to achieve your objectives. I suppose we'll find out when it comes out.
jynxycat @ Mar 8th 2008 9:16PM
You wouldn't be excited about a game with a trailer that has the hero reading a book or talking on his cellphone.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Mar 8th 2008 9:51PM
*face-palm*
It's a fucking game, what the hell do ya expect. OF course it's going to be more action-oriented.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Mar 8th 2008 7:34PM
Well, hate to say it. Looks interesting. But I was already getting annoyed by the camera in the trailer alone.
Eamon @ Mar 8th 2008 7:54PM
I remember that scene where Matt Damon blew up a truck with a single shotgun blast.
No, wait, I don't. That would've been stupid.
ugg.tryptophan @ Mar 8th 2008 11:23PM
notice the white mid-size sedan at the end that sustains a direct hit from an explosive projectile
DBuck_Eye @ Mar 8th 2008 7:56PM
I'm so sick of autocover, it's unreal. TPS's are all about controlling your avatar and making him do what you want to do with the controller. If you want to take cover, you should have to go near cover and press the crouch button, like in the old days. Autocover takes that control out of your hands and makes the game less of a game if you ask me. I also think it's one step closer to that wretched day where we get a game that is nothing but quicktime sequences. Mark my words, someone in the game industry is stupid enough to make it!
jynxycat @ Mar 8th 2008 10:20PM
Yah but it gives a psuedo sense of 'you can't be shot' that wasn't given back in the day. I mean, taking cover is more than ducking behind something. It's leaning up against it, shoot around the object, etc. It's animations that just aren't capable with a simple ducking motion.
Play GRAW 2 in single player, then play the multi player. It's like night and day.
NightSoD @ Mar 9th 2008 12:03AM
does dragons lair count? i think the industry learned their lesson from that
Vidikron (FU) @ Mar 9th 2008 4:08PM
Wait... I think you need to clarify your view. First off, just having a crouch is not realistic. I think it would be fairly normal to press your back against an object in a shootout situation. Second, how do you even know it's an autocover? How can you tell from trailer that you don't have to press a button to take cover (e.g. Gears of War)?
I don't really care for "auto" cover myself, I prefer to press a button to take cover.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Mar 8th 2008 7:57PM

mundox @ Mar 8th 2008 8:04PM
iTSucks.
Looks like crap, your average movie-based game.
jynxycat @ Mar 8th 2008 9:16PM
Book based.
Seraphim @ Mar 8th 2008 8:05PM
Ugly, Laggy, and if I hear that camera charging sound one more time...
Nessman @ Mar 8th 2008 8:07PM
if it's going to win me over the character's going to have to look more like Matt Damon and there's going to have to be minimal shooting.. Bourne rarely fires a gun throughout the movies
Leonidas @ Mar 8th 2008 8:15PM
Everyone here realizes that this is based off the books right? Just like how the movies were based off the books?
Klepto @ Mar 8th 2008 8:18PM
Why the hell do they feel the need to add a goddamn narration? Is it just me are are games trying to be too "movie-ish?" Enough with the talking.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Mar 8th 2008 9:49PM
ummm if you haven't been paying attention,
then yeah, that's exactly what games are trying to do. Providing a theatrical experience similar to that of a movie.
K @ Mar 9th 2008 1:32AM
Yeah I know, that part, but do we really need the REST of the movie crap? What's next? 15 mins of trailers for upcoming games?
Cinematic story-telling is fan-fucking-tastic. The rest we can do without.
Nightvortez @ Mar 8th 2008 8:28PM
The shooting and running looks almost identical to Uncharted, which I loved, so I am actually interested in this game..
sinergy @ Mar 8th 2008 8:29PM
Looks awesome.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Mar 8th 2008 9:47PM
Looks fucking awesome. Hand-to Hand combat looks especially brutal. Let's up this game is damn good.
And to those people going (HURRRRRRR WHY DOESN'T HE LOOK LIKE MATT DAMON!!) It's because it's based on the books, not the movie.
DangerMouse @ Mar 8th 2008 10:10PM
Patrick Duffy was in the books?
HalaMadrid!!! @ Mar 8th 2008 9:55PM
sorry running
Ryan @ Mar 8th 2008 9:58PM
Is it just me, or (outside of the hand to hand stuff) does this not look EXACTLY like Stranglehold?
Wish they would've had Matt Damon's likeness as the main character. I think most people who are fans of this series were introduced to it through the movies (not the books) and that would've helped the immersiveness a lot.
When they said they tried to capture Bourne's hand to hand combat style from the movies they weren't kidding, that part looks phenomenal and looks just like the movies.
SharpBlade @ Mar 9th 2008 5:30PM
HAHA! I was thinking he exact same thing when I watched it, another Stranglehold. Sorry, but this game looks like a XBox1 title with the low poly's, horrible texture's and stiff animations.
Game prices have rised and so have the gamers expectations. If they want to charge $40 for this title then that sounds about right. For now it just looks like multplatform poo poo trying to cash in on the Bourne movies/popularity.
jc @ Mar 8th 2008 10:16PM
The Bourne books and the Bourne movies have nothing in common. They reused the names, but the characters are 100% different. What's weird here is that the scenes from the game look like they are from the movie (which is awesome), but the character isnt and I'm not sure they got the movie rights.
The books were interesting but would be horrible for a game adaption. I'd much rather play the movie adaptation.
Game looks fun. I hope they pull it off.
jdeuel @ Mar 9th 2008 3:09AM
I don't think it's possible to play a game with camerawork as bad as the movies
try to rig up an n64 emulator to hit random C buttons every tenth of a second, and then play mario 64
CDN Crockett @ Mar 8th 2008 10:25PM
WOW!!!
driven2sin @ Mar 8th 2008 10:36PM
all three movies were fun.. you gotta get outside more
antipepsiinc @ Mar 8th 2008 11:34PM
Looks like they confused Matt Daemon with Ben Affleck.
