Presenting Gametrailers' new series: Star Wars Retrospective
28
If you were like us, you obsessively pored over every installment in Gametrailers' Final Fantasy Retrospective. Mixing one part nostalgia and one part detailed biography, it was one of our favorite (and one of GT's most viewed) online video series ever. You can understand our elation, then, when we heard they would be doing another retrospective on yet another major facet of geek culture -- the Star Wars Retrospective.
Based on the trailer above, we assume it will follow the same format as their first retrospective, chronologically detailing the history of all ninety-some video games that take place in the Star Wars universe -- from the good, to the bad, to the ... well, you know. The first chapter of the ten-part series drops this Saturday -- to help pass the time, why don't you tell us about your favorite midichlorian-infused LucasArts adventure?

Actually kinda excited about this. All of gametrailers retrospectives are like little professional mini-documentaries. I know more about Zelda and Final fantasty than some of my friends who played more games in those series. If only this was the kind of programming we got on gaming television.

Also, can I say that me and my friends actually liked Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi?

TIE Fighter! Thats the best one! Gotta love shooting them triangles and balls in the training tunnel! Seriously though, it was a brilliant game.

Shadows of the Empire is my favorite Star Wars game. KOTOR comes in a close second.
What made Shadows so much better than the Star Wars game before it was the great soundtrack/audio quality. It was the first Star Wars game I remember playing that had good sounding music straight from the original score. It made the game feel so epic. Another plus was that it wasn't a rehash of the movie's plot but an original story. I think it helped that it was based off the novel and not just a story that a game director came up with.

Awesome. I've been going back through some of my star wars games over the past week, namely Dark Forces & DF2:Jedi Knight. These games are great, and it's sad to see how flawed jedi outcast & jedi academy were due to them running the story line through the mediocre machine. Hearing Kyle say "sith spit" makes me cringe. It's like it was written by 3rd graders. Graphics were ok, since it was powered by the Quake 3 engine, but the level design was so average, and after playing DF2, it's downright disappointing. It's a shame that DF2 hasn't aged well, but the live action cutscenes are definitely a treat.

I agree. Jedi Knight was so awesome. The levels were huge, the game play entertaining and challenging, and the levels were beautiful. The levels of Jedi Outcast were ok, but not as good. Jedi Academy, however, was very pathetic. Levels were so linear you didn't even need to think.
Someone should mod a new game to imitate Jedi Knight....

Tiefighter was my favorite but the franchise really got its break with Emipire for the 2600.

It's got to be like what?...The ONLY movie that can translate into a game so well....not only that but several genres....they'll probably make note of that little fun fact in it's retrospective.

Man seeing this really brings back the memories. Being somewhat of a Star Wars geek myself, I've played dozens of Star Wars games. From the arcade Star Wars game in Chucky Cheese where you attacked the Death Star all the way to the recent stuff.

Just that short clip there and I'm reminded that there were some stinkingly awful Star Wars games.
Thank goodness there were also a bunch of really great ones.
Kinda like the movies they were based on, eh George.

Rouge Squadron II on gamecube was the spectacular and the Jedi Outcast II and Academy had some good times as well.

My neighbor has one of the Star Wars vector graphic game arcade cabinets. Despite all the other good games, I still get the biggest thrill from playing that one.

Tie Fighter and Jedi Knight are both two of the best games ever made.
Dark Forces and X-wing were pretty cool too. As was the awesome old cabinet vector graphics starwars arcade game.
Unfortunately everything since Jedi Knight has been average at best, though the Rogue Squadron games were kinda fun, and usually terrible.
KoToR (1) ruled of course, but i'm not sure its really even a star wars game.

The original Dark Forces had some really incredible level design, a good story, and fun combat that omitted lightsabers and force powers. Definitely a game that seemed ahead of its time.

Dude, Republic Commando, all the way. Most underrated Star Wars game in existence. I asked one of the developers at E3 2006 if they were gonna make a new one and the answer was "We aren't ready to disclose that information."! BOOYAH! You heard it here first. Joystiq! CONFIRMED!
