The Getaway still on its way to PS3, possibly to theatres

Though not as critically acclaimed or financially successful as other games of its ilk, The Getaway series has found a cult following in the "Get Carter" crowd -- the aficionados of British crime cinema. This niche group of gangster-loving film buffs will probably be pleased to learn that not only is a Getaway release still on its way to the PS3, but a film adaptation of the game is also possibly in the cards.
These hints were dropped by The Getaway 3's writer, Katie Ellwood, who mentioned that SCEA was in talks with various production houses to try and hand off the rights to bring the series to theatres. It's certainly a better body of work to base a movie off of than other game-adapted films we can think of -- a sentiment we wouldn't suggest disagreeing with, unless you wish to be fed to half-starved pigs (link NSFW, and completely awesome).

Waste of money nobody wants to play this game or see a movie about it.

And you speak for everyone right? Or for yourself?
HalaMadrid!!! @ Mar 9th 2008 7:44PM
what is this game about? is there any gameplay videos for this game or just this picture? whatever it is it can't be better than GTA4
Matt B @ Mar 9th 2008 8:10PM
Wow. If it was a wii or 360 game, how would that shape your opinion?
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 9th 2008 9:17PM
Halamadrid, its a good game, well first was anyway, its not better then GTA obviously, nowhere near, but if you play GTA, then you have a rough idea of what the gameplay is like, the only difference is that unlike GTA, it takes place in a city that actually exists, London. Meaning all the elements that are missing from GTA such as Buses (lol, would be fun to highjack a filled bus) and black taxis etc.
The game has a vast amount of potential, its just that the devs keep messing it up ¬_¬ Theres videos of this game, breif, but available, check Gamespot or other sites.

What are you on about, I loved this game for ps2 and if this turns out good I will go as far to buy a ps3 just to play this game.
Haon @ Mar 9th 2008 5:56PM
I actually liked the first one. The second one was weird though. It felt too much like the early syphon filters. If they go back to the first one's mechanics I would play the third.
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 9th 2008 6:46PM
This game may not be the king of the crops when it comes to gameplay, and they have made critical mistakes in previous titles of its calibur, but I can't help but feel this game has lots going for it.
First off:
Its in London, makes a difference, we always seem to be based in America in games, eg: GTA Which is not a bad thing, its just getting a bit cliche. This is a great thing for English gamers who would like a GTA in London but would see that happen, besides, with buses, trams, undergrounds, overgrounds, famous places such as the London Eye etc etc etc in London, if its all put into this game, that could be one hellova fun game. I love London, so messing about in London and have the old bill come down to chase me would be cool.
Second thing:
If they use a storyline similar to that of 'The Business' or 'Football factory', theres lots of potential where gangsters come to play, English thugs and hooligans are just as bad as any Mafia, Russian or Ghetto boy, and yet, none have ever featured in a GTA game, because GTA doesnt take place over here.
Third thing:
Going back to the London opportunity, its one of the biggest cities in the world, theres lots of opportunity for a game of it.
Theres lots more this game could have going for it, it just needs to be done right, the first game was great, but limited next to GTA, second was a waste of space, with the type of gameplay this has, and the city it takes place in, there is no excuse for its third sequel to be crap, and if it is, the devs need to be hit with spiked clubs, lol.
horngreen @ Mar 9th 2008 6:48PM
Am I confused? (don't answer that) The Getaway was a Steve Mcqueen film from the late 60s. It became a game or two and now a new movie will be made based on the game? WTF?
SUPER DESU @ Mar 9th 2008 6:48PM
I do love London sandboxes. Its so much better knowing your way around a virtual city without using the crappy little map in the box.
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 9th 2008 6:59PM
Thats also a problem, I know my way around London, so if theres something blatantly missing, I won't be most pleased, unless its something minor like a back road. But I guess thats an added bonus, quicker police escapes ;)
aahatimy @ Mar 10th 2008 3:42AM
I agree with Maverick, knowing the city too well might make it it's downfall. If major roads are missing or just lead to somewhere else then might make the people who know London too well have a slight sub conscience bias against it.
Negativecool @ Mar 9th 2008 6:52PM
OK...They're making this for Sony's PS3 right? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Sony have a movie studio...a successful one at that? Why are they "looking" for cooperation from other studios when they should just partner up with Sony pictures?
Maybe it's just my ignorance about the divide between movies and video games, but it seems clear to me that if a game is capable of being made into a film as well, Sony should be the company to do both for, because they have the capabilities to do both successfully.
I just don't get it.
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 9th 2008 6:58PM
Ask Sony :)
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Mar 9th 2008 7:32PM
Yeah, Sony pictures could do it, but Sony Pictures, while a business, still has to look at the financial aspect of it. Few game to movie scenarios have panned out alright. Fewer still are the ones that have profited and The Getaway remains a niche title amongsts Sony's IPs. So it's a risky venture. However, they could always recruit Johnathon Stathos.
darkman @ Mar 9th 2008 7:32PM
In a perfect world, Sony could make game and movie of The Getaway. But, sadly this isn't a perfect world and Sony isn't that "close" within itself.
Sony Corporation is like oil and water. None of Sony subsidiaries get-a-long with each other. You would think a massive consumer corporation like Sony, making a music and video store on the PS3 would be a cake walk. Not with Sony.
tmacairjordan87 @ Mar 9th 2008 7:09PM
if they make it more like the first one sign me up for it. Though they'd have to fix the controls first cause it had horrible on foot controls. Decent game overall though!

If its anything like that with the GTA element, it will be 100% incredible, love the buses ^^
Pointz @ Mar 9th 2008 10:19PM
Yeah but the buses drove like shit, but what would you expect. Yeah I liked the first one too. My only problems were that there wasn't enough freedom, it was too slow, car physics were tank like (couldn't easily dodge a car like in GTA) and the lean on wall recovery system.
Other than those this game had great cinematic values and a great parallel storyline.
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 9th 2008 11:43PM
Agreed, they are trying thier best to capture the essense of Busy london, the original games didn't do too well at that, its okay for GTA, because those cities don't exist, but when playing Getaway, you feel as if you are walking around a deserted London, which is far from what London really is wink wink, conjestion charges etc.
London is a hectic busy city, without the business, its depressing, if they manage to pull that off in the new one and keep the GTA feel, that would be the recipe for perfection. ALternatively, Rockstar could just make thier next game in London and save us the misery :P
Batzarro @ Mar 9th 2008 10:28PM
Ah, you don't need to make it based on a game. It's a mafia movie, give Al Pacino a brittish accent and kill him in the height of his empire and it's done. You don't need a games name to do that!
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 9th 2008 11:39PM
What makes you think Britain needs Al Pacino for a movie based on gang warfare? Theres more then enough excellent English acting candidates to take the role. But when it comes to down and out hooloiganism with the ol south london attitude, its all down to:
Danny Dyer :)
Christian Bale
And Bob Hoskins would have to be no one other then the Don of the movie :) Hes bad ass evil when he wants to be
aahatimy @ Mar 10th 2008 3:46AM
Daniel Craig would be good in the film. My two favourite actors right now are English...Daniel Craig and Christian Bale.
Nutsonyachin @ Mar 10th 2008 12:14AM
Getaway made for the PS3 from the Ground up. It's likely to make GTA IV look like GTA I. 50gb of Data without the need for other language tracks to.
gregory mitchell @ Mar 10th 2008 12:28AM
it will have what it lacked back then power to clean up all the glitches. the storyline was waaay better than gta and so were the vehicles. it didnt matter to some but it had real cars. if they can clean it up (a lot, but hopefully they can) it will make a good game. The funny thing is that its not a GTA it just has an open world. they are no side mission. its completely story driven like any or action game, it just happen to have driving involved. actually like the game driver back in the day
gregory mitchell @ Mar 10th 2008 12:35AM
I just thought about it. This game had the details going for it.
Nigeria @ Mar 10th 2008 6:12AM
I really dislike this "mock cockney" crime nonsense, regardless of the medium. It's always written/produced by those from the middle class, so they always happen to rely on outdated stereotypes.
Being a Londoner, when this game comes out I'm going to automatically dislike it. I know it. Not because I'm a hater (or fanboy???), but rather, because I'll see all the small things wrong with it. And that's a real problem for a game striving for "realism".
*And to the guy who mentioned "Football Factory" and "The Business": please watch better films, please.
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 10th 2008 7:29AM
I watch better films, but those two as far as I remember bring out the full english gangster stereotype, thats not to say I found them to be incredible movies, because by all means they weren't, but with that sort of playout with a tone up of the story to fit the modern gangster scene, it could work, the Getaway original never had the problem with the storyline side, 2 did, in fact number 2 was boring.
And how can you automatically dislike a game striving for realism? Most if not all games are? But they add the stereotype deliberatly, because its a game, if it were to keep the typical way of life, the game would be boring, with little or no killing, conjestion charges, and paying taxes. Do you think GTA really portrays what goes on in America? Criminal gangs commiting mass murder and getting away with it?
Nigeria @ Mar 10th 2008 8:01AM
I don't like GTA either.
Most of the games I play aren't realistic in the slightest, they're mainly fantastical. (Sonic, Killer7, Resident Evil - just off the top of my head).
Anyway, I think you mistook my comment. I didn't say I dislike realism, it's just that games like The Getaway, and its similar ilk - I hope I'm not being absolute - strive for the wrong type of realism. It just seems too bland. Too safe. It's that "Hollywood standardised realism". If you grew up in certain areas of London you'd know that most of this crime stuff is "tosh". It's boring.
Or maybe my own prejudices are seeping through. I'll look out for the game, and play it on someonelses PS3.
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 10th 2008 9:17AM
True, I don't think developers excluding Kojima, really go out and explore the scene for the base of thier story.
Its like I could be sitting here at my computer and from scratch make a game about Russia, I've never been to Russia :O All I'm doing is checking a few things on the internet and basing it off of stereotype and what I've seen on TV. Alternativly I could just make a game about Aliens on a non existant planet, far easier, or a game about shooting Arabs, which doesn't need stereotype or even a plot, because its about the US or UK saving the day.
Laziness, ignorance or just plain convenience, who knows, thats for the devs to pan out.
TheEnlightened @ Mar 10th 2008 6:47AM
Not to nick pick put it would be SCEE shopping around for a movie studio, as it's a European Sony in-house studio, not an American one.
