I had the 360 from launch day and not had a problem with it. If you go into a Microsoft technical support forum what do you expect to see in there?!
If you go onto the Sony technical support forum your see loads of PS3 owners complaining too...
The RROD is nowhere near as bad as some try and make out on here. Get a console, if it breaks then just replace it, the odds your 2nd will break are tiny...
As for the AAA+ games comment, i suppose Sony have loads right? Were a quater through 2008 and MS and Nintendo have released multiple exclusive games already, what have sony released?! Some people need to think a little before they type :)

Perhaps you should take your own advice, and think before posting? The 360 had a 33% failure rate; compare this with the PS3's (reportidly under 1%), and you'll see you're argument about RRoD not being all that bad really does sort of fall down. You're presonal experience does not represent humanity at large, I'm afraid.

Also, you cannot draw a conclusion on how good the PS3's library will be for 2008 based on ONLY the first quarter of the year.

@ Hyams,

Unfortunately, you sir, are full of shit. Please provide sourcing for your 33% failure rate.

There is none. Anecdotal, Fanboy ramblings, articles from my nephews sisters uncle who knows Billy Bob, not his real name, at MS: do not count.

I was partially correct:

'Even so, rumors abounded that the initial failure rate of the "Xenon" motherboard based Xbox 360 may have been as high as 33% and is still substantially more than industry average. In February 2008 an examination of 1040 Xbox 360s by SquareTrade found a 16% failure rate, 10% of which are due to the "Red Ring of Death". 171 were returned under warranty as "disabled", 60% with general hardware failure.'

Regadless, my point still stands. A 16% failure rate is still MUCH higher than the PS3's and Wii's failure rate (both apparently under 1%).

So? Mine has RRoD'd twice in 3 years. But it isn't really a big deal. It just means I was down for a total of 2 weeks over 2 1/2 years.

That is irrelevant to the point I was making here, though.

And if you'll just look at some of the other comments I've made in this blog post (ie. the third one from the top of the page) you'll see I agree that RRoD doesn't hurt that much.

Well....

I've had a Wii for a bit but was toying with a next gen - think i'll go 360

nice price, lots of older games to pick up cheaper on ebay, media streaming stuff very attractive, plus never had an Xbox so some older stuff to have a look at

Then go for a PS3 when its cheaper, has had a nice slim redesign and lots of games worth buying

Being a couple of years behind rules :)

to be fair, the PS3 also has media streaming capabilities...and w/ one extra feature that the 360 doesn't have, which is the ability to "save" anything you stream directly to the PS3 HDD over the network.

yea i always save my streams right to my hard drive. i get network hiccups sometimes but having the file running off the hard drive completely gets rid of that problem. PS3 and 360 definately have their various perks over the other. if you like the games Xbox offers then go buy that 360 but i would personally never buy a console just cause it's cheaper, you get what you pay for *cough*RRoD*cough* oh, excuse me.....

it would be a smart move, but considering GTA IV doesnt drop til the end of NEXT month (49 days away actually), if this is that price drop, they jumped the gun a little early.

also the fact that this pricedrop is only for Europe doesnt help your cause either bud.

wow. where are all the 360 fanboys today? this thread has turned surprisingly negative lol.

price drops are generally good for consumers across the board because the competition will usually follow suit. i know MS better do something bigger than this though, they seem to be loosing steam. not as many mega huge Halo level titles for this year so far.

Not yet. Maybe when Ninja Gaiden 2 hits. Otherwise all the 360 games that interest me are also on PC.

To be frank, 360 has little to worry about, they dropped the price for one of two reasons, sales are slowing down or simply as a further attempt to sway potential PS3 buyers right before the release of GTA4.

However, lets see how well this works, if Europeans wanted Halo so badly, they would have picked up thier 360s ages ago, doubt a £50 drop will make them any more tempted to pick it up just for Halo 3 or Gears.

The Wii is still selling uncontrollably over here, and theres the added concern that PS3 has gone from nothing to something within the last year, to the point its racing up to high sale pitches, Micro is in a good position, but this is a chance to put them in a better position and somehow halt the sales of PS3 or otherwise, not sure what Micro is up to to be honest, but its good either way. :)

To be fair - as someone who doesn't have either a PS3 or 360 at hand. The day GTA IV is released is the day I buy a 360. It's £243 (inc game+bus fare) vs £343 for the PS3 version.

Plus I'd need a VGA cable (£20) or a set of boxes and cables to get the PS3 working on my monitor.

Yea. I know which I'm going to get. Since there has been no PC announcement yet...

I won't buy a 360 until/unless there is a complete hardware redesign.

It seems utter madness that there is still a 'Red Ring' on these things. When a feature of your product is a cultural byword for failure, you need to redesign it.

If they can go to a '360 slim' that looks better, runs cooler and doesn't sound like an express train then I would happily pay current prices for it. But I won't pay half that for the current design.

What is a 360 arcade?

I guess i could go look it up, but the fact that all the next gen consoles seem to come in several different flavours and versions, each with slightly different features, is highly confusing.

I'd be worried that buying anything less than the most expansive one was going to cause me problems in the future...

The arcade is kinda like an upgraded version of the Core model. It has a 360(which doesn't have a harddrive) and a memory card that has a couple arcade games installed in it.

The Xbox 360 Arcade is the replacement for the Xbox 360 Core. It includes a wireless controller, 256 MB memory unit, composite AV cable, HDMI 1.2 output, and 5 Xbox Live Arcade titles. The consoles, identified by packaging labeled "Go Play!", are bundled with Boom Boom Rocket, Feeding Frenzy, Luxor 2, Pac-Man Championship Edition, and Uno on a single disk, which also includes a "Welcome Video" and several game trailers/demos.

so is that good? Is it missing anything critical? Could a hard drive be added later? Is one even needed?

I'd imagine its pretty confusing for most consumers.

actually this is what's hurting Microsoft. The fact is, Microsoft have been making games on the assumption that not every gamer has a 360 with a Harddrive.

Brian, you should be ok. MS was requiring devs to make they're games playable without the HDD but they've allowed a couple exceptions, for example Burnout Paradise online since it requires the HDD for online play.. The main thing is you just won't be able to download an extras for those games.

How does the 360 Arcade affect my ability to play Burnout Paradise online or download GTA IV DLC?

The only negative I can see to the 360 Arcade is that size limitation MS has put on XBLA games, but I really don't have a problem with those games as they are.

They need a price cut. The PS3 is serious (cereal) competition in the UK, yes, it's not like the US where the PS3 is just sitting on a shelf.

£150? Jesus. I'm tempted to get one myself, friend of mine has a bunch of old Xbox HDD's (20gb) so I might partake of one of them. HMMM. Now to find a game that looks an ounce interesting.

Nah. I'll wait till they're as well built as the Wii or PS3. Just as I waited before Sony fixed the PSP's dead pixels! Huzzah!

True, and looks like the number of PS3s will rise too, it seems to be catching on. Drop the 360 another £50 and I can guarantee all Wii and PS3 owners will be converted, £100? Thats nothing ^^

For now though, it all depends, this is a European deal, so as far as Europeans go, we'll have to see how it sells, IF it sells as well as Micro hopes it will.

I think it's a move Sony will have to respond to. £250+2 games (from a selection) and sometimes an extra controller is a really sweet deal... for the record I've never used the word "Sweet" before. Make of that what you will.

Wii won't have to do anything. Nintendo can keep the system at that price and it'll still be sold out and do tremendously well. Even if both opposing systems were at £100.
