Boston wins Nintendo's Smash Bros. Brawl launch tournament
Representatives from Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York met in NYC for Nintendo's official Smash Bros.
The Smash competitions went throughout the night, ensuring that patient Best Buy shoppers were treated to some entertainment while they waited for the game's obligatory midnight release. Many New Yorkers, after picking up their copies, rushed to the subway, undoubtedly rushing home to enjoy their spoils.
Update: Really -- seriously? Melee? Fixed.

The Artist formally known as Jesus @ Mar 10th 2008 11:59PM
Um... so what's the score now?
NY: 2
Boston: 3
Or is it something else?
Kevin @ Mar 11th 2008 12:03AM
Sorry, but I can't take stuff like this seriously. What a joke. The first dude saying "don't give up"...?
Honestly, are you really trying to give us a moving speech prior to you playing a video game?
Maybe I'm getting too old for this stuff (29), but when I see that much hooplah over a game, it kinda makes me cringe.
VoLiTioN @ Mar 11th 2008 1:47AM
It's not a "moving speech", he's telling the truth. If anyone wanted to play that game (or any game for that matter) competitively, you have to play, learn, and keep going. You can't get discouraged by losing. You learn from it. That's the only way you win.
LaughingTarget @ Mar 11th 2008 9:52AM
You also have to live in the NY or Boston area because apparently Nintendo isn't aware that there are 250 million people that aren't remotely close enough to partake in these "national" tournaments. There are likely plenty of players that could have competed or even won this thing that didn't live in those four cities. Hardly something to be proud of, victory when 75% of the competition was not able to compete.
Silly Sauce @ Mar 11th 2008 12:37AM
Why do these brawl players think they're all hard? It's a fighting game with the Pokemans. It's almost as bad as that SSB player on MTV's True Life: I'm a Pro Gamer episode.
Curtis the Claw: Brawl Code 1075-0441-3284 @ Mar 11th 2008 1:42AM
Maybe you should get this game...naaahhh
xeleion @ Mar 11th 2008 9:41AM
This coming from the guy that watches MTV's True Life: I'm a Pro Gamer? Hmm...
You know what? It wouldn't even be worth my time to start on that.
Silly Sauce @ Mar 11th 2008 2:51PM
Heaven forbid I go into a SSB thread and post my opinion only to have every Nintendo fanchild pre-ejaculate on my post. Kudos.
Curtis the Claw: Brawl Code 1075-0441-3284 @ Mar 11th 2008 6:41PM
Your opinion lost any value when you made that post that had the word "naaahhh" in it.
Gaddes @ Mar 11th 2008 12:40AM
"Stunning"? I don't really think so... plus items helped him way too much. The tourneys around me turned off items.
mike @ Mar 11th 2008 1:43AM
Items are part of the game dude. Turning them off means you blow.
I noticed the Ike player was one of those characters who blew lol. He didnt avoid shiek when he had the spicy fire and kept trying to grab that smashball and left himself open.
I also cant believe these are the "best" My brother is a shiek player and he plays way better then that. And I can beat him too most of the time (I use falco or pit). I think there are alot of people out there who are better then those guys. im confused why they were in the finals? Probably because not everyone was able to/entered the contest. Not to mention is was US only.
Gaddes @ Mar 11th 2008 2:08AM
well then, the best buy and gamestops I went to to see the tournaments definitely "blew" (probably would've made my Bowser win a hell of a lot easier though, lol). There were some valid wins in that video, but when Ike got a win from the hammer, my reaction was more of an "ehh". I guess he had to get ONE point at least, lol.
Kris @ Mar 11th 2008 2:54AM
well i was thinking that about the spicy curry not the hammer, at least the hammer you can avoid the curry is like a spread shot nearly impossible to avoid
mike @ Mar 11th 2008 12:48PM
ikes hammer win was not really needed. shiek was already at 100%. Items that drop are a part of the game and create more strategy. See how shiek used strategy when the smashballs came down instead of trying to get to it as fast as possible like ike. Turning items off is like playing halo 3 with BR start, ITs what the "pros" do to think thier pro. Wrong. You should be able to use any weapon and use strategy to aqquire the better ones. People like to eliminate strategy from games and turn it into who has the best finger control (movement/aim) to determine whos a "pro". I like how this tournement left the items intact to keep the strategy, which shiek used well and was able to beat ike without a sweat. Im sure had items been off, Ike probably would of either won or came close like down to the last stock. But hes one of the "pros" that cant handel strategy.
jaybcorreia @ Mar 11th 2008 1:39AM
were even winning video game tourneys lol minus the pats
all time choke they still dominated and the Red Sox/Celtics and even the bruins might even be going 2 the playoffs this is Boston's and New England's Golden Age lol
ps our NE revolution soccer team went to the championships grant it they lost they still got there lol
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 11th 2008 9:32AM
I can't understand a word you just said.
Ken Seang @ Mar 11th 2008 2:09AM
I must say that was not a bad fight... I wanna see more!
Kenny @ Mar 11th 2008 2:48AM
psh i didn't know top tier fighters used items. lame.
Howard-the-Duck @ Mar 11th 2008 3:07AM
It's not a true Smash Bros tournament unless you see everyone playing Fox vs. Fox on Final Destination.
StrangeAxel @ Mar 11th 2008 7:53AM
Sheik-only... really?
Everyone's pretty damn balanced now in Brawl, but people who still choose Sheik are just craptastic in reality. Couldn't Korea-man choose someone else or at least changed to Zelda a bit to shake things up a bit?
Zelda herself was, and still is good.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 11th 2008 9:34AM
I made it to semi-finals in the local GS tourney with Zelda in zelda mode. She's way more badass than most people give credit for.
Most people pick zelda for shiek. I think I kicked so much ass because none of the other players actually ever played anyone who was good with just zelda.
Ralph @ Mar 11th 2008 8:32AM
Did he say "I love jerking off" in the post-match interview?
PunkBouncer @ Mar 11th 2008 8:49AM
Way to rep Boston! The winner is actually a former top-ranked melee player. The randomness introduced by items should make it more remarkable that he successfully switched over from melee to brawl.
I like how you peeps rag on his skills -- where were you all during the competition? (Mr. Korea rode into town for the regionals during a blizzard, btw.) Looking at you StrangeAxel and mike.
Nevets57 @ Mar 11th 2008 8:10PM
These guys were pretty sub-par. The guy playing sheik was alright but the guy playin Ike was terrible. If Ike had been played by Azen Sheik would have been mauled. Check out smashboards for some of azen's Ike vids and you'll know what i mean. Im guessing that either nobody knew about this "tourney" or only the crappy players showed up but seriously that was the most boring brawl ive seen.
liquid @ Mar 12th 2008 9:29PM
That's how bad most of the people commenting on this match are. You people don't even know the player's names. And who is this "Mike" person? I think I am more known in the smash community than "Mike".
People are bad if they take off items? I guess you were not good enough to go to Evo. I didn't happen to see any items for that tournament and it's one of the biggest of the year.
And by the way, tournaments like these usually happen in big cities. Don't go on and say "oh I would of have won if it I went". If you really wanted to go, you would of.
