Does the online multiplayer work in this game when you are not playing against people in your list of friends? I was able to get games going with people in my friends list, but not the "anonymous" internet users. No one would ever join in my games.

Apparently quite a few people have been having this problem. Either the game is broken, or its just a traffic issue. I'm opting for traffic issues, since every time it fails to connect me to a game, it also boots me from the network

I wasn't able to get a game started with friends, my wii is too far away from my router for a non-laggy connection. whoever thought it would be a good idea to make the wii wireless should get punched (just a little, just bruising punch to realize their mistake.)

I agree with some of these criticisms, but some of these are just scaping the barrel.

"Character animations, while speedy, typically ignore the laws of physics, weight, and momentum."

... seriously. You want some realistic physics in a game with a bunch of cartoon characters?

"Many of the backgrounds are kept very simple in an effort to the keep the framerate up"

... but if they upped the graphics, and the framerate chuggs, would you be happy then?

Don't get me wrong Brawl isn't without it's faults, but these criticisms are ridiculous.

You know they must be doing something right if the game lasted this long, and Brawl is still this highly anticipated. It's not just a match up of Nintendo characters that brings in the money.

Anyone can take a bunch of likeable characters, and try to make a game. I mean do you remember Ehrgiez? You don't do you...

The only difference between the depth of Smash Brothers and the depth of more technical fighting games is Smash Brothers has a better control scheme.

Each character in Smash brothers has (sorry hardcore fans if my numbers are off):
4 throws + sucker punches
5 weak attacks
5 weak aerial attacks
4 smash attacks
4 smash aerial attacks
4 special attacks (some can behave differently in the air)
1 Dashing attack
Blocking
'Perfect blocks' (are these still in SSBB?)
Ground Dodges
Aerial Dodges
Parrying (both attacks and items)
Catching
Several additional moves while hanging (such as rolling up, attacking, jumping or dropping then jumping/attacking)

Each move has their advantages and disadvantages and rarely will 2 moves on a character just be the same thing but with different animations. Even the 'clones' like Falco/Fox play completely differently to someone who's played smash for a decent amount of time.

The only time Smash can be a button masher/luck game is with items (which can always be disabled).

If two newbies in a fighting game go at it they can win by button mashing so you can't sit there and play against the computer/newbie friend and then turn around and call it a button masher.

So the point is people who belittle Smash for a lack of depth generally just don't understand the game. You don't have to like the game or play it, that's your own opinion, but calling it shallow is very misinformed.

You know the nega-reviews aren't actual negative reviews... they're meant to point out the little tiny failings in games that everyone says are fantastic. Most of the time they just reinforce what a good game it is. Saying stuff like the single player mission of SSBB is bad is hilarious. Who cares if it's bad, that's not the point of the game. The point of the game is multiplayer!

I'm commenting here instead of the "Post your Brawl Code here" thread in deference to the people just trying to find some people to play with.

I just wanted to say - Nintendo and the Wii get a HUGE thumbs down from me because of all this friend code bullshit. People give the PS3 flack for the PSN not having cross game invites and in-game friends lists and cross game messaging/voice chat.... but what the hell is up with Nintendo's online scheme? Enter a frigging credit card number with the Wiimote for every single person you want to play with? What is this, 1995? Are we configuring Net-BEUI, IPX, and IRQ? Jeezus.

How come the 20 million or so Wii owners out there aren't up in arms over this? It boggles my mind... the Wii is super user friendly until you go online and then BAM, it hits you with 16 digit friend codes that are different from you 16 digit brawl code....

Separate 12 digit friend codes, not 16, but yeah

The thing of it is that our disatisfaction with their online play cannot be heard, statistically. Because no accounts are created, simply buying an online-enabled game is their only way of registering approval for their online system. Plus the fact that the random-matchmaking side of the online is incredibly easy to use, so it bloats the number of unique users

A good record of how many people actually take the effort to go through the friend code process would tell the tale of how widely people actually put up with this archaic and draconian system

so you mostly like the game because of all the characters in it? that's a pretty stupid reason to spend $50-$60 on a videogame, just to stare at characters. Not to mention a good 1/2-3/4 of the characters are just carry overs from the first two.

I bought the game. In fact, I bought a Wii yesterday mainly for the single-player part of this game. I enjoy the game. The online is shit, but everyone knew it would be going in, unless you're a moron. Nintendo hates online play. They are very forward about that and always have been. They couldn't give a shit less whether it works properly or not. Personally, I like SSE, at least thus far. My biggest complaints are the damn coin launcher and the continue system. The last game had a far superior system for both. It is a much better game than melee, just not in every aspect. And yeah, it's all but unplayable without a gamecube controller, and I've always hated the GC controller.

This is the only complaint that was both illegitimate and unwarranted. SSE is impressive with its depth, but certainly not a great standalone. Nintendo's online is bad. Its beating a dead horse, but it is a legitimate complaint. However, if you cannot see the visual improvements, you need your prescription checked

I'm not gonna read that whole list, but just at first glance:

"It must be noted that Brawl is not well-suited to a standalone Wii remote."

LOL what the fuck kind of a "negative" is that? So many games don't even give you the option to play with the Wiimote by itself. They did the best job possible with the limited amount of buttons. The other option would be not to have it, and not being able to play when friends are over and you don't have extra controllers. Would you like that?

Just goes to show how much of a complete stretch all this is.

Also near the end of the game 2-3 characters could be unlocked in a single stage. this was kind of annoying because it took the challenge out of unlocking characters, they didn't all have to be in the story mode.

I'll never understand people's attraction to this game. Its a holdover 2D fighting game with simplistic mechanics, mediocre graphics, and horrible online support. The single player component is the definition of a weak tacked on adventure mode. The only real fun comes from unlocking characters and fighting your friends, but for the cost of this game you could go pick up several real fighting games and play them instead. In those games the hit detection, control scheme, and balance would likely have been considered unlike in Brawl. Having played it, I can say that the gamecube controller has significant advantages compared to the other control schemes, particularly due to the right analog stick. This is probably because Brawl is essentially the same game as Melee. Of course to reviewers that doesn't seem to matter, only real games get punished for lacking innovation or having major flaws. Bloated exercises in fan appeasement are instead showered with praise. Any other game with marginal depth, 3 broken control schemes, horrible online support, and a slapped on single player component would have been skewered by reviewers. This one gets treated to what can only be called a proverbial circle jerk on the part of reviewers. Only Nintendo can get away with making games like this and get praised for it. More power to them I guess.

my complaints about the game r they took some of the freedome u had on melee with the controls like if u meteor someone they go in kinda angles not just staight down(if u get wat i mean),no ranking online and no voice chat or addons u can download ,just some things ive been thinking bout
