Pics of Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne emerge
We're going to be honest and admit that we still don't get the Max Payne movie project. It's been five years since the last game in the series, and the brand power in the mass market has to be hovering around nil. We weren't even sure we believed it last month when we heard that filming was to start this month. That was, until we received this pic of Mark Wahlberg on the set of the film.To us he looks ... well, like Mark Wahlberg in a dark jacket. But since Max's face has looked completely different in both of his games, we don't know exactly what we expected. But if you're in the Toronto area, you may be able to help us get a better idea of how things are coming along. One of our readers sent in a list of shooting locales and times where you might be able to catch a glimpse, we've put it right after the jump. You know where to send it if you find anything juicy.

While I love the Max Payne games, and always thought it could make a great movie, Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne? Really? Not only does he not look anything like Max from either game, he just doesn't hav the same type of voice to pull off the over-the-top noir monologues that gave the game so much of it's style. It seems like they are just turning the movie into a stupid action flick, rather than the noir/action hybrid it should have been. Granted, this is totally based on the casting job of Max, so I could be totally off.

and of course......rain.
Borsi @ Mar 10th 2008 12:02PM
Might be snow, after all they're here in Toronto ;)
riggs @ Mar 10th 2008 12:18PM
it cant be max payne without some sort of hydrogen oxygen mixture :)
Jeramy @ Mar 10th 2008 10:57AM
i might watch this is marky mark busts a phat rhyme in the middle of the movie.
NukeAssault @ Mar 10th 2008 11:25AM
We can only dream.
mr nimblewick @ Mar 10th 2008 11:01AM
Odd how this is both good casting and a bad career move for wahlberg.
naxe @ Mar 10th 2008 11:21AM
VERY VERY OFF TOPIC..... but i have a question. to anyone that would like to answer..
Any recommend Dreamcast games?
is the Dreamcast hackable? can a ripped game be downloaded to a CD-R?
i just uncovered my working dreamcast that went in the closet 9 years ago now.......wow it's been that long?!
anyway. thanks to anyone who replies.
Don't care to much for Payne. some games should stay games. Silent Hill....Tomb raider...Resident Evil are the exception.
Rollins @ Mar 10th 2008 11:35AM
Resident Evil should've stayed a game.
That said, yeah, Dreamcast games can be burned to CD-Rs no problem. No mod chip or anything like that necessary. Sega didn't bother implementing any significant copy protection for whatever reason.
naxe @ Mar 10th 2008 11:52AM
I personally didnt care much for the film adaptation for RE. But the box office numbers dont lie. it was a blockbuster. I saw the end of part one. the middle of part two. and the entire third one. I LOVE RESIDENT EVIL. I Got a GAMECUBE just to play 0 and 1 (again).
Haon @ Mar 10th 2008 11:26AM
He doesn't look constipated enough. Heya! Its Payne!

predatorian234 @ Mar 10th 2008 12:33PM
Soooo based off of that picture. I'd say Johnny Knoxville would play a great Max.
snr0n @ Mar 10th 2008 12:33PM
Based on face-scrunching ability, they probably should have opted for French Stewart: http://site.steelcityauctions.com/french.jpg
elmersglue @ Mar 10th 2008 3:26PM
Dude, Michael Madson 20 years ago would've been perfect for this part.

Sweet, they're filming right in the heart of downtown and the financial district. Hopefully this is A-roll shooting and not just B-camera footage/stunts/effects, and considering the times and streets they chose, they spared little expense (though in all fareness, the new Hulk movie blocked up an even bigger chunk of Yonge last year and I could see the huge spot lighting from my condo all night).
Glad to see productions still coming to Hollywood North, despite their dollar being so crappy. Guess I'll take a walk out at lunch and see if I can spot me some Mila Kunis...
aristokrat @ Mar 10th 2008 5:06PM
I thought Vancouver was Hollywood North.
Cahlito @ Mar 10th 2008 11:58AM
Max Payne is the only game that I have beat more than 3 times. It's my all time favorite. And seeing that it's finally getting a film, brings a tear to my eye.
SugarDaddy @ Mar 10th 2008 2:44PM
Tears of joy or tears of sadness? I share your love of Payne. I still love playing Max Payne 2. It's one of those games where I will beat a part and just reload from my previous save to try and do it with more style. Great game... Not sure about the movie though unless it involves prolific amounts of pain killers.
Borsi @ Mar 10th 2008 12:04PM
There must be enough money put into this project, they were using the "sub" subway at Bay Station for most of all last week. I can only imagine doing that it would cost a pretty penny.
NATO_Duke @ Mar 10th 2008 12:28PM
I would think the age of the game will aid in it doing well as a movie.
Many people will not think of it as a game adaptation and will just think of it as a story about a cop getting revenge and killing a lot of criminals. On top of that will be those of us who knew the game & will file in to see it as well.
SithLibrarian @ Mar 10th 2008 12:31PM
Haha, yeah he needs more constipation face!
t_m @ Mar 10th 2008 12:42PM
His hair isn't tall enough. :-(
he was good in the Corrupted and The Departed (though that film was a hugely poor imitation of the original)
Infact, since he was Chow Yun Fat's co-star in CYF's first Hollywood movie, and Max Pain is obviously hugely inspired by CYF movies... it kinda makes sense...
Mike @ Mar 10th 2008 12:44PM
Max Payne featured gritty, slum-like locales. The areas they are filming have gleaming hi-rise office towers. Doesn't make sense.
NATO_Duke @ Mar 10th 2008 1:06PM
Should be Hells Kitchen right? Does Toronto look like Hells Kitchen? Oh noes!!!!!!
Ted @ Mar 10th 2008 12:48PM
I'd prefer it if the money went towards a Max Payne 3, bring bullet time back into vogue, but whatever.
Stef Geiger @ Mar 10th 2008 1:28PM
They REALLY should have gotten the guy who actually does the voice of Max Payne to star (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0564548/ ).
Having the same voice would really help, and if you've ever watched Rescue Me, you'll know that he looks the part a LOT more than Wahlberg.
Gunrock @ Mar 10th 2008 2:31PM
He was great in the Departed, but being the gritty quiet type doesn't work for Marky Mark. But, they said the same thing about Matt Damon...
Flakundenga @ Mar 10th 2008 3:17PM
wow they are filming in toronto-that's awesome! hope i can drive by one of those day although i doubt it as it's snowing way too much to drive there :(
Mike @ Mar 10th 2008 5:07PM
I kind of pictured Clive Owen's character from Sin City as a good start for the character.
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0002539/
Bobby @ Mar 10th 2008 6:05PM
Ah I live in Northern Toronto. These locales are too far for me and are set right at the heard of downtown.
Wish I had the time to commute down to see them.
Rob @ Mar 10th 2008 9:01PM
The 2007 Clive Owen movie 'Shoot-em-Up' was very very Max Payne - and was utterly ace! Slap some brilliantly bleak Max monologues in there and you've got a winner!
Mark W is a decent enough actor and reckon could do a good job with the role.
Mykal @ Mar 11th 2008 12:16PM
Well there is a great love for the story. This isn't the only Max Payne movie. There is another one that is more indepedent that HAS the approval of the creator and writer for the story. http://www.payneandredemption.com/
So even if the big money guys make a crappy movie there will be better one coming.
Ghostround @ Mar 13th 2008 1:50AM
I'm keeping an open mind. Marky has suprised me in the past. He did a pretty good job in The Departed and The Shooter (at least in my opinion. Seems like I'm the only one who liked that one). And if his career could survive the craptacular Planet of the Apes Remake debacle, I doubt Max Payne will make a dent. With video game based movies, 80% of whether or not the suck depends on script and direction.
Still waiting for the film adaptation of Centipede
arooguy @ Mar 13th 2008 12:48PM
He looks more like the guy from Indigo Prophecy.
Rajah @ Mar 17th 2008 9:41AM
I was on set (or as close as I could get) yesterday at King & Yonge when they crushed a police car from building debris. They started set up around mid-day and blew it at almost midnight!
The night before, on the 25th storey roof of my building, I had a perfectly clear view of police and camera helicopters hovering next door, shining their lights in the windows for a scene. :)
