Error Code 85010: Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection 'Smashed'
Nintendo's chief explanation for Error Code 85010 goes something like: "Ours [sic] servers may be trying to handle an unusually high amount of traffic (especially if you are trying to play online with a recently-released or popular game, or if there is a new Wii system update). Please wait a few hours and try the connection again later." That's an oblique way of stating, simply: You're trying to play Smash Bros., aren't you?
Brawl's online component isn't entirely dysfunctional. If you've traded digits, playing 'with friends' is stable, and also permits more than one player from the same Wii to participate. Likewise, Spectator Mode is almost always working if you're the faceless voyeur-type who also likes to spend a little coin (in this case, on arbitrary betting). But when it comes to random brawls 'with anyone,' Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection tends to get, um, stressed. Good luck getting anything more than a few rounds with the sandbag before the service drops you during peak hours -- also known as, 'nights and weekends.'
When contacted, Nintendo assured us that its technicians are looking into the problem. See what happens when you hire a pair of plumbers to build your server farm out of warp pipes?
[Note: If you've received Error Code 85010 and are unable to establish any kind of online connection, then the problem could be associated with your internet service (dude, dial-up is so not gonna work -- ever) or your router (Wii can be picky). Refer to Nintendo Customer Service for more information.]

Looks like we're screwed and theres nothing we can do....
xeleion @ Mar 11th 2008 1:44PM
Wait... I don't have Spectator Mode on my Brawl. Wtf?

That second link is frickin' hilarious. I want that child for my own.
NightSoD @ Mar 11th 2008 12:39PM
The real question remains. When will be able to actually use this? A week? A month? Ever?
With smash probably going to be one of the wii's most popular and lasting titles, I hardly see the amount of people trying to play with anyone dramatically reducing anytime soon.
FIX IT NAO!
Mr Khan @ Mar 11th 2008 4:55PM
The other question is how exactly are they so overloaded with traffic if nobody can use it?
I mean, it can't just be friend matches that are flooding the system so badly as to block out randoms, and if it is, then that's a bad sign for those wishing to see change in WFC in the future, as that means enough people took the trouble of friend codes (thus passively approving of them) to crash the non-friend servers...
Personally, i get all week before Easter off, so i'll try at like 1:00 pm on Monday, and see what happens
Ethan @ Mar 11th 2008 12:39PM
At Nintendo, long numbers clearly make sense.
ClarkyCat @ Mar 11th 2008 1:29PM
Correction, long numbers written in an oh-so cute font! Which makes it all ok, apparently.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Mar 12th 2008 4:13AM
At least error numbers are positive on the Wii, unlike those depressing Macs with their negative error numbers. Think happy!
nerrrrrrd @ Mar 11th 2008 12:39PM
as a 360 owner, I'm glad my $50 a year guarantees me uninterupted gameplay and never disconnects.
PojoMofo @ Mar 11th 2008 12:54PM
LMAO, your being sarcastic right? or did you forget about that 2-month outage during Christmas???
anyways, only 1/10th of the Wii community know the thing hooks up to the internet to begin with, so they are probably not to worried about it.
Vidikron (FU) @ Mar 11th 2008 12:48PM
Heh... except for that month around Christmas when Live was plagued with issues for many people, right? Of course, in all fairness, Live has A LOT more going on than Nintendo's pathetic online offering.
Curtis the Claw: Brawl Code 1075-0441-3284 @ Mar 11th 2008 12:49PM
HAHAHAHA You obviously didn't have a 360 during Christmas last year did you.

"anyways, only 1/10th of the Wii community know the thing hooks up to the internet to begin with, so they are probably not to worried about it"
I think the other 90% still thinks that it only plays Wii sports

One month out of 5 years isnt so bad IMO. Its NOT an ever on-going issue. It was a one time thing. Dont try and make it out to be like if it always happens. You guys are sad.
nerrrrrrd @ Mar 11th 2008 1:26PM
for those needing clarification, yes I was being sarcastic.
Curtis the Claw: Brawl Code 1075-0441-3284 @ Mar 11th 2008 1:35PM
@fenix
Yes I know 1 month out of 5 years isn't bad at all, I just thought it was funny he was saying that when so recently there has been a problem with it. I don't have any problems with Xbox Live, I use it every day and love it (except when it goes out for a month). I don't think anyone made it out to be anything else than it being out for a month.
baby sea tuna @ Mar 11th 2008 1:36PM
And for those *really* needing clarification, it was down for closer to a-week-and-a-half than two months.
xFenixKnightx @ Mar 11th 2008 1:41PM
Baby Sea Tuna
Exactly
umm....hello??? @ Mar 11th 2008 1:52PM
...and the month that you lose while your x360 is serviced for the RRoD (as mine was sent in its coffin yesterday). but now I have plenty of time for my PSWii games!!
Dick @ Mar 11th 2008 2:12PM
Actually, XBox 360 "Repair" Turnaround takes on average two weeks. I have three friends who have RROD'd and gotten it back in ten days, including weekends.
So Meh
Co @ Mar 11th 2008 2:13PM
Fenix you are a downright 360 apologist.

"Actually, XBox 360 "Repair" Turnaround takes on average two weeks. I have three friends who have RROD'd and gotten it back in ten days, including weekends."
There is no way in hell that is true, both times mine has taken over a month to get back.
OMGOMG @ Mar 11th 2008 3:42PM
If something like this happened to Halo 3 or MGS 4, we would have never heard the end of it. But since it's SSB, it's OK. Whatever.
Brandon @ Mar 11th 2008 3:10PM
In Canada, it took 7 business days to send in the Xbox360, and get back a new one. However, mine was not an RRoD issue.
Vidikron (FU) @ Mar 11th 2008 3:12PM
@Fenix
Hey now, I defended Live in my post. I made sure to point out that Live is much more robust and active than Nintendo's online.
dsub @ Mar 11th 2008 5:18PM
Wow. You guys are great at reading other comments before posting the same thing as the guy before you.
Regardless, I agree. A couple weeks of outage over a period of 5 years is pretty damn good. Not to mention we got a free game out of it. When Nintendo starts offering a free VC download, then let me know. I don't expect a reply anytime soon.
severian00 @ Mar 11th 2008 7:16PM
Oh and when I can voice chat without using xbox live or psn or some computer related thing let me know. Not to mention the fact that live went down while hosting hundreds of different titles online play, while the Wii network went down because of 1 title. When Halo 3 came out there was hardly a burp, when COD4 came out there was no issue whatsoever. I'm happy to pay $4 a month to ensure uninterupted service (for the most part) than to pay nothing and have it all come down or suck like PSN.
deaftly @ Mar 11th 2008 12:39PM
My smash bros should be coming in today or tomorrow, between the disc just flat out not working and the shitty online. Im not exactly excited for it now.
xFenixKnightx @ Mar 11th 2008 1:24PM
Lulz, thanks for that.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 11th 2008 2:23PM
Cuz, you know, Smash brothers sucks unless you can play it online.
...
Noshino @ Mar 11th 2008 4:40PM
Crono,
But what about when you can't play it at all?
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 11th 2008 4:42PM
I didn't say anything about that, did I?
:)
NvM @ Mar 11th 2008 5:05PM
I had a Wii at launch and it got pretty dusty between beating Galaxy and getting Brawl and the disk worked fine.
I wouldn't worry.
Noshino @ Mar 11th 2008 5:20PM
yah, but you only touched one of the 2 things that deaftly mentioned :]
mike @ Mar 11th 2008 12:39PM
To all the people who say live is BS cause you pay for it: WEll now you know why we pay for it. Its 1000 times better, more options, none of this crap. Worth $30 a year easily. IF nintendo had a pay for service done properly, I would buy it too.
Reuben @ Mar 11th 2008 12:41PM
You pay $30 a year for Live? Who are you sleeping with?
miyagi @ Mar 11th 2008 12:45PM
The Internet.
Deals are out there. Just bought another 13 month card last week for $28 shipped.
Ordeith @ Mar 11th 2008 12:51PM
Live is readily available for $40 for 13 months.
That is $3.077 per month or $36.92 per year
It isn't $30. But it is a lot closer to $30 than the $50 the SonyBoys keep throwing around.
riggs @ Mar 11th 2008 12:53PM
only time i buy subscriptions are when they are on sale as well, last one i bought was 32 bucks (12months+1) free shipping.

Its obvious to anybody that if online gaming is important to you, Nintendo is not your platform.
