This problem happened to me. I used spectator mode to make sure the internet was working. Furthermore, I aim to resolve this with using friend codes posted here. Though I'm sure that can only take me so far.

I've had nonstop wi-fi error codes since getting my hands on brawl Saturday night. I've yet to complete a match, and most drop at the sandbag or character selection screen.

Also, as a Joystiq writer, you do know that the Spectator matches are NOT live right? They are just recorded, then sent to your console later. So the match you are watching could be hours, days, or months old. No chance of lag there. When you think about it, what's the point? Brawl might as well just have 4 CPUs playing a match.

And the friend codes, jeez... I don't know why you can't at least have an area that shows you who has requested to be your friend, rather than guess and hope that someone else has added you through a 100% out of game process of communicating numbers to others. At least if someone is registered as your friend on the console message board, you should be able to add them to brawl without another code.

Sorry for the friend code rant. I really don't mind friend 'codes' instead of 'usernames' so much, I just mind the way it's implemented, with the blind matchmaking system and redundant registering.

I registered 30 friends from the first page of yesterday's post, but only 2 have confirmed so far, and they haven't been online. So I haven't tested the friend matches.

Based on Nintendo's cannned response, I doubt these issues will be fixed soon, and will still be there for Mario Kart. Brawl might as well not have online at this point.

I had problems Sunday during the day, but Monday afternoon and evening I only had a few problems with lag, but no error code. and isn't this the 1st online game for the Wii?? they might have the same problem with MarioKart, but I think there's a lot more going on in the backgrounds and stuff for SSBB, so am hoping that MK won't have as much problems. but I have my GameCube controllers and Wii controllers so if my friends come over to play it isn't a problem. and I can always play my PS360 games online if the Wii has problems during peak hours.

Not bad at all for their 1st online game for the Wii.

crono-

how were those games' online performance? I'm not huge into sports so I couldn't remember...and not enough free time to search while at work.

regardless, I still like SSBB and am eagerly (somewhat less so now) waiting for MarioKart...could be tricky with 12 players online...

I think we all have to agree that for whatever reason that nintendo feels the need to try and be so secure, its ruining their chances of having a succesful online service.

They are quite literally using technology from 20 years ago. If anyone remembers playing the first Warcraft (no not WoW, learn your history) You had to dial peoples exact IP address while they set their computer into a receiving mode. This made things difficult when there was only dial-up since you had to get off the phone to send out the request. FF 20 years later and Nintendo's new system is almost exactly the same. Friend Codes? are you kidding me?

If I can't see the names, or talk to the people I'm playing with, I might as well be playing against the computer.

Are you suggesting that Jerkface would die as a result of licking his own ass, or that he should die an unrelated coincidental death after sampling his own anus?

I've played Pokemon Battle Revolution and Batallion Wars II online with the Wii and both were terrible. Pokemon, not so much, but when there was lag, it was unplayable. This was before we got a 360, and we thought the same as a lot of Wii owners... that no online service is perfect.

Well, once we got the 360, that myth died HARD. There are always going to be problems with any online service, whether it's games or just the internet. But XBL is FAR superior to anything the Wii has even approached.

Yes you have to pay for it, but it's a few bucks a month and I can play nearly every 360 game and XBLA game out there on it... and every game for the system has some online component, whether it's Achievements or Leaderboards.

As a life-long Nintendo Fanboy, I have to admit... Nintendo completely fails with online on anything but the DS.

And, I am one of those people who shipped off their Wii and copy of Brawl to get it 'cleaned'. Nintendo completely screwed up this launch for me and many others.

nice to see so many non bias people here...and we gamers are suppose to rational...

i bought bully for the 360 and when the crap hit the fan with that, rockstar said they where gonna fix it immediately and even said it was their fault...but nintendo...its your fucking fault. i know this is nintendo's first foot into the online pool but what the hell?! the main reason i bought brawl is because of the online! And the connection is just the icing on the cake! what about the lack of a list of room made for people looking for matches...like NORMAL online games!!! i like brawl and all[the adventure mode sucks ass and people are reporting lazer problems but it still sorta good] but this is no freaking excuse...HARD TRUTH, FIX THE FUCKING ONLINE!

For the record I own both the PS3 and Wii (best of both worlds).

Great you own 2 of the 3 but you try to speak from authority on a system you don't even own and a service you don't use(the 360 and Live!) still just as bad. I have all 3 and use all 3. Guess that trumps the misinformation you've spouted about Live.

I was getting this error pretty often, along with 84020 and 86020. Pretty much all of these went away after I upgraded my router's firmwware and assigned a static IP to the Wii. Given that the static IP came before the firmware upgrade with little success, I'm pretty sure it was the upgrade that fixed things.

I would suggest this to anybody having problems. On Netgear routers, disabling the "SPI Firewall" seems to help as well.

Damn you Nintendo, for fudging this up so bad!!!! Don't you understand? This is Brawl, the ONE game that every die-hard Nintendo fanboy (read: Fernando) would most certainly play every fudging day religiously while is the game that die-hard Ninty bashers (*cough*Shaggitarius*cough) would love nothing more than trample!

i still havent been able to get mine to play online. and the "Join Game" button is always blurred out for me.

in all fairness though, it is more than likely a combination of the mass amounts of people playing and my shitty connection with the shitty Netgear router. i tell ya, next time i have some extra cash, im buying a new router cause ive had this one for 2 years and its sucked for every minute of it. thats probably why it was on sale to begin with.....

Nintendo's WFC system makes sense for what it is and for what's needed from it. I suppose here I should mention that I own a Wii, PS3, and a gaming PC. My brother also owns an XB360 so I have experience with all systems.

The PSN: I haven't even used it because imo theres no games worth playing online for the damn thing that I can't get for PC $10 cheaper. Maybe when MGSIV and SCIV come out.

XBL: It's a stable enough network, with alot of great options/features, but like I really want to pay money to play halo and GoW with foul mouthed 12 year olds.

Nintendo's WFC: Friend codes aren't as big of a pain as people make them out to be, its like a username, you trade, and then it adds you to the friends list. I see people complaining about no voice chat. What the hell for? so some jackass can tell me how high he is? or so I can say "Yeah! I'm owning you, bitch!" when it's quite obvious, or so someone can do that for me? I mean *maybe* team communication, but seriously how much strategy do you put into strikers charged, smash bros, or mario kart? I'm not saying the wii has the best network. It's merit lies in it's first party software. But It's not a bad system overall. However, the fact that SSBB brought it to it's knees overnight... well.. jesus christ nintendo, at least admit that you dont have enough servers and give us an ETA on your service being up and running. And quit stalling with crap about routers and IPS, If I can watch a game theres nothing in my router stopping me from playing.

So that leaves me at the PC. Which is, and forever will be, the most powerful, versatile gaming platform. However it's lack of an overall standard, which is what allows said versatility also means it doesn't always work right, and sometimes you might have to jack with it for a few minutes and actually know what you're doing.

Anyways, I hope this comment was either informing, or it pissed of fanboiz 'cause I pointed out the weaknesses in their favorite system. (Wii, PS3, XB360 or PC)

Love,
James
