The sound of human silence is deafening a mere 48 hours into the online
Super Smash Bros. Brawl experience. With some vigorous testing, we've discovered five simple ways to bring the mysteries of voice chat to the Wii. Harnessing the power of other consoles, or a com-pu-ter, the joy of sharing voice while playing online with someone hundreds or thousands of miles away can be experienced by many. Don't forget to check out our
list of Brawl friend codes if you need some online buds.
- Xbox Live: Or as we've come to know it -- Brawl LIVE®. Just set up private chat and off you go. Got more than one friend? Go into a Halo 3 lobby (you do have Halo 3, right?).
- PSN: Start up a new chat under the "friends" section of the XMB. Invite all the friends you want and wait for them to join. Works and sounds exceptional! USB and Bluetooth compatible.
- Skype: Set up a conference call.
- TeamSpeak or Ventrilo: Guilds, clans and other computer types know these services. Perfect for guildies brawling together.
- Nintendo DS: Use Metroid Prime Hunters or Pokémon Diamond or Pearl. Warning: More inane codes required to pull this option off. There are also homebrew options.
Of course, if none of these options are viable, might we suggest using a classic:
The phone.

It's about voice chat. Just in case you didn't HEAR
(pun intended)
BROLYWILSON @ Mar 26th 2008 8:44PM
Well just so you know. there is voice chat in SSBB. How you ask well I'll tell you. You know how the ps3 has to have a usb plug in mic well go buy yourself one cuz all you have to do is use the usb plug in on the back of your wii there should be one left after you plug in the the usb for online. And you might have to do some configuring with your wii but it works none the less.
Jechtshot78 @ Mar 11th 2008 6:15AM
Oh this is just ****ing sad...
Grog @ Mar 11th 2008 12:00PM
Why is it sad? You know that slightly-popular game, World of Warcraft? It doesn't have built in voice chat. Most PC games don't - even the ones with millions of players. Those of us who have been playing them for years have been using TeamSpeak or Ventrilo for years too.
Firewall @ Mar 11th 2008 12:08PM
WoW does have built in voice chat now.
TomCo @ Mar 11th 2008 3:16PM
Some games might not have in-built voice chat but you'd never have to get a SEPERATE MACHINE for 3rd party voice.
Thats why its sad.
Nigeria @ Mar 11th 2008 6:25AM
Voice chat isn't that important. Leave it alone.
And isn't voice chat through the DS horrible. It's like listening to a mechanical mouse, violently having sex, through the ear. It's just not very practical.
Corey Scott @ Mar 11th 2008 6:44AM
Actually, it sounds rather nice. Have you ever used it?
MarkHawk @ Mar 11th 2008 6:48AM
Voice chat is amazing... I recall learning to type better to send messages in FPS in Delta force. You know how hard it is to type Bomb in place, need help and describe the location, or even say Lots of guys over here... thats where gamer words started but now we speak gamer. Thanks to Xbox's always supplying a headset there isn't a reason not to plug in and chat with friends... (friends over assholes that is)
It's like people who type messages on cell phones like it's somehow less convenient then actually speaking to them.
Nigeria @ Mar 11th 2008 6:58AM
Corey: I played Prime Hunters on my cousin's DS. She showed me the voice chat and I wasn't impressed. It was horrid. Just a bunch of scratchy noise. The voice was barely audible. Maybe you need a completely silent room to appreciate the voice chat?
Mark Hawk: no, voice chat is awful. Xbox Live, when I had it, was filled with racists and homophobes. Every other Halo 2 match you heard n*gger and f*ggot. It's too much. Especially when you're paying a fee.
It's good with your real-life friends though. A cheaper alternative to picking up a phone. But not necessary.
J.Goodwin @ Mar 11th 2008 7:43AM
So, Nintendo fans don't need voice chat because when Nintendo has done voice chat in the past, it has sucked ass.
No matter that Microsoft has very successfully integrated universal voice chat, including cross game voice chat, and even Sony has managed to figure out how to do it successfully.
Nintendo fans are officially the beaten spouse that keeps going back.
Nigeria @ Mar 11th 2008 8:01AM
Goodwin,
I'm not a Nintendo fan. I'm not a fan of any company. I just said voice chat is overrated.
I don't really think you can compare DS voice chat to Xbox Live, or whatever Sony is offering. I don't understand what you're on about.
You seem drunk, or high. Baggies are £20 here. Or maybe you like rocks. Go smoke some rocks and listen to some music. You'll feel better. Trust me.
Blazur @ Mar 11th 2008 9:08AM
You must not play much online gaming then. There's nothing better than talking smack to somebody you just pwned, or congratulating others/your team on a nice victory.
Nigeria @ Mar 11th 2008 9:16AM
:(
Shape @ Mar 11th 2008 9:31AM
You know that there are tons of voice chat settings on XBox Live. You can set it up so that only your friends hear you and you can only hear them. You can quickly mute individual players, as well. If you don't want to hear the crap, you don't have to. But you can still talk to your friends, which I find very important in a multi player game.
NATO_Duke @ Mar 11th 2008 9:54AM
Nigeria, it sounds to me like you're shorting voice chat in order to make an excuse for Nintendo's failure to use it.
Yeah, there are lots of jerks out there on Live who make racist and rude comments (to get attention generally - not due to being actual racists). There are also griefers who hack into teamspeak and annoy the crap out of you when you are in matches on the pc.
Thats life. It doesn't mean that the need or pleasure of using voice chat doesn't exist. I use it to talk to people I want to, while I ignore/mute those I don't want to hear.
Voice chat is a great option that can be used to make gaming a better experience. Not having the option to talk to others at all is in no perk - no matter how you paint it.
xFenixKnightx @ Mar 11th 2008 11:33AM
Duke
Any normal gamer knows voice chat is a great thing. This guy is just a jackass making excuses just like with some other PS3 fanboys saying rumble wasnt needed. OF COURSE its not needed but its better with it.
Chatham @ Mar 11th 2008 12:32PM
That's what all current voice chat sounds like... Have you played on XBL?
mike @ Mar 11th 2008 12:58PM
voice chat is extremly important. go play just one match of halo 3. If your team does nto have mics, 100% lose. Try it out. If your not gonna put voice chat in a game, you might as well play with computers/bots. Voice chat is one of the most important things in a game. And it does not sound bad over XBL. Buy a proper microphone. When I play starcraft (Yes I still play it), I have a couple friends who use teamspeak as they are playing it. You can see that their game is GREATLY imporved vs typing with the keyboard. With the voice chat you can quickly explain whats happening and where your ally needs to go without stoping the action to type.
If anything, Voice chat is a requirment for online gaming.
NATO_Duke @ Mar 11th 2008 12:59PM
Chatham - who are you addressing? Most of us have used Live - and most of us have the basic ability to use mute when we don't like it.
Jack @ Mar 11th 2008 1:33PM
For be fair Fenix, it was Sony who said it wasn't needed. And it was the Sony "fanboys" that demanded rumble and got it.
samfish @ Mar 11th 2008 2:58PM
I think voice chat is pointless, too.
I find it awkward usually talking to someone I don't know at all on a microphone, especially if I'm making fun of the guy.
When I do want the social component, I prefer to just invite friends over and do it that way.
Granted, I don't play FPS games...ever, so I apparently don't ever have an actual need for it. It would be nice to have some sort of basic option for it on the Wii, but personally I find it's something I can live without.
Mr Khan @ Mar 11th 2008 4:42PM
I agree with Nigeria and samfish, and that's not because i'm a Nintendo fanboy, its because i hate phones, especially cellphones, and voice chat feels just like that
I prefer text chat, and believe strongly that they should integrate that (plus, its easier to filter text, so it would be preferred by them)
I've never seen the appeal, but thats just me. I can count on one hand the number of times i've used my cell phone so far this year.
Tiptup300 @ Mar 11th 2008 9:48PM
Or how about keyboard support!
Ex: "k u pwnd c tht endkll? swt"
LiK @ Mar 11th 2008 7:04AM
pretty obvious methods but i think most people are cursing when they're playing SSBBso chat isn't all that important for this game. :)
jman @ Mar 11th 2008 7:08AM

flameofdoom666 @ Mar 11th 2008 8:21AM
It takes a while. About 7-9 mins? It's annoying to play with random people, but when I pla ywit hfriends- it's instant.
AwesomeTown @ Mar 11th 2008 7:29AM
Unlimited calling with same cell carriers and a hands-free set. Easy.
Boostjunkie @ Mar 11th 2008 8:25AM
Voice chat is pointless with random people, unless you like a whole lot of pointless cursing and racist remarks. But with your friends is extremely important. Without talking to your friends while playing I think it would take a lot of the fun out of multiplayer.
Anticrawl @ Mar 11th 2008 8:29AM
Why would you get on Halo 3? Noone wants to overuse the 360's disc drive or have it running like a "space heater" while you are playing Brawl. If you must have 4 person chat on the 360 while you play Brawl use an arcade game, everyone has UNO right? That will be a great deal easier on your 360 and the temperature in your room.
I usually just private chat though when I'm too lazy to setup a skype chat and my PS3 isn't in the same room as the 360 and Wii, it's in my living room. Then there is always the trusty instant messanger on your laptop while you play, but if you're going to do that you might as well use skype.
James @ Mar 11th 2008 8:32AM
Xfire and Steam are options also for PC.
Mills and Boom @ Mar 11th 2008 8:37AM
I'd give them money to not have voice chat in Smash Bros.
Hell the first thing I do in TF2 is mute all players. Them built in voice chat commands are all thats needed (at least for me whos at rank 18 out of 16,000 on a little family of servers). How often do you need to talk in online Brawl? "Sentry ahe..." nope.
"Oh I totally pwned you" are words I'd rather not be saying or having said to me.
LeChuck @ Mar 11th 2008 9:22AM
"I'd give them money to not have voice chat in Smash Bros."
So when are you sending Game Arts their check?
NATO_Duke @ Mar 11th 2008 9:57AM
"whos at rank 18 out of 16,000 on a little family of servers"
Dude, you are always hyping yourself. Pretty damn funny.
Seems they can have voice chat with options for those not interested to mute it - such as Live does.
Mills and Boom @ Mar 11th 2008 10:24AM
Point I was making that in a game that mostly requires strategy through teamwork I, and many of my peers, can compete and win without a mic. Relying on built in messages only (doesn't Nintendo let you customise these too?).
So why on God's sweet fucking earth would I need to use a mic in Smash Bros? Sounds to me like it's them people who just abuse the mic who want chat in Brawl, like those who distortedly play TV and game themes down and scream obscenities.
Thank you very much.
NATO_Duke @ Mar 11th 2008 10:28AM
Don't you ever play a game with your friends and laugh.
My "clan" wouldn't be very much fun if we couldn't joke and laugh while playing games.
Mills and Boom @ Mar 11th 2008 10:33AM
No sorry, I don't bother with clans. And after Mario Kart DS I've come to realise that some games are better played locally, Brawl and Strikers included.
Having a great game of Melee with some pretty crazy self-set rules is awesome, but having that, switching the console off and your friends just vanish is crap IMO.
I suppose it's odd now to rather play games against local friends in a game party atmosphere.
NATO_Duke @ Mar 11th 2008 10:52AM
I don't see why it has to be one way or another. Just because people like to laugh online with friends, it doesn't follow that they don't also like to do so locally as well. One does not exclude the other.
I simply don't think that the console can only be used for multiplayer when someone else is in my house. That would be selling the concept short to me.
ScottG13 @ Mar 11th 2008 8:46AM
I find this pretty hilarious. And sad. Voice chat is "price of entry" for online MP games in 2008. Too bad Nintendo still thinks its 1994.

The Fuzz 53 @ Mar 11th 2008 9:19AM
I tried giving the online play a go last night and it wouldn't work for me. I tried to play a game with anybody and it couldn't find any other players and gave me some error code. Anybody else have this problem?
The Fuzz 53 @ Mar 11th 2008 9:21AM
I tried to do it last night and couldn't find anybody. It would sit there until I got an error code.
Shape @ Mar 11th 2008 9:28AM
I suggest doing a similar article on Unreal Tournament III on the PS3.
