The sound of human silence is deafening a mere 48 hours into the online
Super Smash Bros. Brawl experience. With some vigorous testing, we've discovered five simple ways to bring the mysteries of voice chat to the Wii. Harnessing the power of other consoles, or a com-pu-ter, the joy of sharing voice while playing online with someone hundreds or thousands of miles away can be experienced by many. Don't forget to check out our
list of Brawl friend codes if you need some online buds.
- Xbox Live: Or as we've come to know it -- Brawl LIVE®. Just set up private chat and off you go. Got more than one friend? Go into a Halo 3 lobby (you do have Halo 3, right?).
- PSN: Start up a new chat under the "friends" section of the XMB. Invite all the friends you want and wait for them to join. Works and sounds exceptional! USB and Bluetooth compatible.
- Skype: Set up a conference call.
- TeamSpeak or Ventrilo: Guilds, clans and other computer types know these services. Perfect for guildies brawling together.
- Nintendo DS: Use Metroid Prime Hunters or Pokémon Diamond or Pearl. Warning: More inane codes required to pull this option off. There are also homebrew options.
Of course, if none of these options are viable, might we suggest using a classic:
The phone.

Thats why its sad.
And isn't voice chat through the DS horrible. It's like listening to a mechanical mouse, violently having sex, through the ear. It's just not very practical.

It's like people who type messages on cell phones like it's somehow less convenient then actually speaking to them.
Mark Hawk: no, voice chat is awful. Xbox Live, when I had it, was filled with racists and homophobes. Every other Halo 2 match you heard n*gger and f*ggot. It's too much. Especially when you're paying a fee.
It's good with your real-life friends though. A cheaper alternative to picking up a phone. But not necessary.
No matter that Microsoft has very successfully integrated universal voice chat, including cross game voice chat, and even Sony has managed to figure out how to do it successfully.
Nintendo fans are officially the beaten spouse that keeps going back.
I'm not a Nintendo fan. I'm not a fan of any company. I just said voice chat is overrated.
I don't really think you can compare DS voice chat to Xbox Live, or whatever Sony is offering. I don't understand what you're on about.
You seem drunk, or high. Baggies are £20 here. Or maybe you like rocks. Go smoke some rocks and listen to some music. You'll feel better. Trust me.
Yeah, there are lots of jerks out there on Live who make racist and rude comments (to get attention generally - not due to being actual racists). There are also griefers who hack into teamspeak and annoy the crap out of you when you are in matches on the pc.
Thats life. It doesn't mean that the need or pleasure of using voice chat doesn't exist. I use it to talk to people I want to, while I ignore/mute those I don't want to hear.
Voice chat is a great option that can be used to make gaming a better experience. Not having the option to talk to others at all is in no perk - no matter how you paint it.
Any normal gamer knows voice chat is a great thing. This guy is just a jackass making excuses just like with some other PS3 fanboys saying rumble wasnt needed. OF COURSE its not needed but its better with it.
If anything, Voice chat is a requirment for online gaming.
I find it awkward usually talking to someone I don't know at all on a microphone, especially if I'm making fun of the guy.
When I do want the social component, I prefer to just invite friends over and do it that way.
Granted, I don't play FPS games...ever, so I apparently don't ever have an actual need for it. It would be nice to have some sort of basic option for it on the Wii, but personally I find it's something I can live without.
I prefer text chat, and believe strongly that they should integrate that (plus, its easier to filter text, so it would be preferred by them)
I've never seen the appeal, but thats just me. I can count on one hand the number of times i've used my cell phone so far this year.
Ex: "k u pwnd c tht endkll? swt"

I usually just private chat though when I'm too lazy to setup a skype chat and my PS3 isn't in the same room as the 360 and Wii, it's in my living room. Then there is always the trusty instant messanger on your laptop while you play, but if you're going to do that you might as well use skype.

Hell the first thing I do in TF2 is mute all players. Them built in voice chat commands are all thats needed (at least for me whos at rank 18 out of 16,000 on a little family of servers). How often do you need to talk in online Brawl? "Sentry ahe..." nope.
"Oh I totally pwned you" are words I'd rather not be saying or having said to me.

So when are you sending Game Arts their check?
Dude, you are always hyping yourself. Pretty damn funny.
Seems they can have voice chat with options for those not interested to mute it - such as Live does.
So why on God's sweet fucking earth would I need to use a mic in Smash Bros? Sounds to me like it's them people who just abuse the mic who want chat in Brawl, like those who distortedly play TV and game themes down and scream obscenities.
Thank you very much.
My "clan" wouldn't be very much fun if we couldn't joke and laugh while playing games.
Having a great game of Melee with some pretty crazy self-set rules is awesome, but having that, switching the console off and your friends just vanish is crap IMO.
I suppose it's odd now to rather play games against local friends in a game party atmosphere.
I simply don't think that the console can only be used for multiplayer when someone else is in my house. That would be selling the concept short to me.
