FFS! This always happens... just after I finally buy a game retail, it comes out on steam. It happened with Company of Heroes, and now it's happened with Armed Assault. I wish my retail version could be registered on steam to be re-downloaded if I ever lose the CD :'(
Tiptup300 @ Mar 12th 2008 9:27PM
Or you could just back it up...

You may be able to. From the menu in steam, go Games->Activate a product on Steam and put your CD key in.
I did it with Prey and it worked. NFI if it will work for other titles though.

I couldn't agree more Ted. I asked the following to Take2 Games:
Hey,
I have bought the following Civilization games at retail:
* Civilization IV
* Civilization Chronicles
* Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword
All is good - though I would love to gain access to Civilization IV
through Valve's Steam. This because of auto update, no-dvd and
community features.
Is my only option to buy these again on Steam?
The answer:
Hello,
Unfortunately your only option is to purchase the game via steam. We don't offer anything that could give you these features via cd.

It's a shame that it's only for people from North America at the moment. I would have of loved to buy RollerCoaster Tycoon :

Not available in Europe! is this becoming a trend on Steam ? hope not, hope is only because of the Ifrogames - Atari relation being resolved.

1) I must get Steam.
2) I must get Portal and probably TF2.
3) After all of that, it'd really stupid to pass on the opportunity to play the Indigo Prophecy.
jcd @ Mar 12th 2008 9:22PM
Ahh, indigo prophecy... At first I thought it would be like $20, but for $10 I'll take it.
Jerk Face @ Mar 13th 2008 11:36AM
Every one of your statements is 100% true. Steam, Portal, TF2, and Indigo Prophecy are all 100% awesome.
driven2sin @ Mar 12th 2008 8:08PM
so i can d/l tank battle on steam now?
Ted @ Mar 12th 2008 8:35PM
Whenever I go on holiday to the U.S. I buy a bunch of steam US games :) They will then stay on your account forever so you can still re-download from europe. Alternatively, iff you have someone you know and trust in the US you could give them your username/password and have them buy it for you... Or maybe gift it to you in exchange for paypal money.
Matt @ Mar 12th 2008 8:57PM
Someone's thinking with portals.
Hectigo @ Mar 13th 2008 3:49AM
It's pretty hilarious, actually. From what I've read, the company is practically broke, and now they make their games available online... but only for US residents. There's some money to be made here in Europe too, you know. Well, I guess it's temporary anyway, and common sense dictates that this won't become a trend. If not, I guess I can live without Indigo Prophecy for now. I hope that Valve is at least trying to push their partners into releasing globally, so everyone would have the best possible selection of games available.

This was what I told them to do in the comments thread about them losing lots of money. I'm glad, I was starting to think that posting here on joystiq wasn't actually changing anything in the real world.
though, if those are their best games, i'mnot surprised they are losing so much money.
(and US only games on steam a really annoying.. the rockstar ones in particular, and Dark Messiah! grr..)
