When EA snapped up BioWare, common wisdom was that the game's main attractions would be ported to any system that would have them. But it seems that (for now, at least) that doesn't hold true for space opera Mass Effect. As BioWare senior manager Matt Atwood told CVG, "I believe we'll be Xbox 360 exclusive for at least a short period of time. We're still working out the details on that, but we've had a great relationship with Microsoft and done very well."
There's plenty of wiggle room here, of course, because there's no telling how long a "short period" is. But it's not like we blame them. Heck, if we had a game company, we'd promise Microsoft a "short period" of exclusivity on everything. That way, when we inevitably had to delay the PS3 version to make it work, we'd make some free coin on the deal. Everybody wins! ... Well, we'd win.
Update: Atwood continued to elaborate with Videogamer.com, confirming a PC version, saying "We haven't announced plans for timing on Mass Effect 2, period, so at this point we're not really ready to talk about it, but because we've got a really great PC fan base we think it's really important to deliver the PC experience as quickly as possible."

Doubt it, Microsoft have the publishing rights to ME1 so it doesn't matter what EA want to do, it doesn't matter that EA own Bioware now that deal/contract is still in place.

I couldn't care less what system it comes out on, as long as it's a system I own and I can play it. All this "PS3 confirmed!"/"360 exclusive!" bullshit is a joke really.

In typical joystiq fashion... You have misread the quote. I read it as "Mass Effect will remain exclusive at least for a short time." Which means ME2 will be exclusive, with potential for PC as the exclusivity deal is gone.

Its funny, all the while we were hearing about how PS exclusives should be on the 360 because the publishers would make more money, somehow 360 owners not so eager to spread the love. But the case for putting titles on PS3 is stronger than ever, with maybe 60% of the install base, PS3 is selling as many copies of DMC4 and Burnout as 360.
Doesnt really matter anyway, 360 "exclusives" like Mass Effect, Gears and Bioshock always play better on PC anyway than on consoles - I personally would always play shooter / shooter RPGs with kbm rather than analog.
"when we inevitably had to delay the PS3 version to make it work"
Nice sly dig there Joystiq - guess you forgot about the delays in Smash Bros, Super Mario Galaxy on wii and also Too Human, etc. And remember about Halo 3 out in time for PS3?
It’s perfect,’ Gates says, radiant with bloodlust. ‘The day Sony launches [the new PlayStation], and they walk right into Halo 3.'
The quality of first-party titles on PS3 is consistently good (except maybe Lair) and will never have half-finished games like Gears or trash like PDZ or Kameo.

well i agree with him for the most part. the recent multiplatform games are selling pretty close to what the 360 is. i think alot of that has to do with the combination of the install base and developers actually starting to get grasp on the PS3 hardware. it does seem like the 360 guys have a double standard in terms of exclusivity. why not let everyone enjoy the games? i know exclusives are necessary to draw people to certain consoles but in reality, timed exclusives seem to get the job done too. everyone who wants game will have more than likely bought it on 360 already by the time it comes out on another console/PC. so Microsoft gets the exclusive revenue, EA gets the multiplatform revenue, and everyone gets to play good games. win, win.
i wont go with him on the PDZ and Kameo stuff though since they were launch titles, those arent supposed to wow anybody anyway. never played Gears, so i have no comment on that.

Really? Then I suppose these titles were better than
Kameo: 80.6%
PDZ: 81.2%
Folklore: 75.4%
Formula One: 75.9%
Genji: 57.7% (one of their heavily touted launch titles)
Heavenly Sword: 80.3% (another heavily touted title)
Lair: 55.5%
MLB 07: 78.1%
All of these are Sony published games that got worse reviews than Kameo and PDZ.

Ok, let's get over the "double standard" thing here. There is not one person that posts about all things xbox 360 related. In a bizarre twist, it is actually many different people posting. The guy who said "there shouldn't be exclusive games" in a thread about a PS3 exclusive is probably not the same guy who is saying "Mass Effect should stay exclusive" here. I know, I know, with the billions of people in the world it's extremely unlikely that two internet posts were made by different people, but at least consider it.
That is, of course, ignoring the shear hypocrisy of these statements since the backlash from PS3-only owners in any and every "MGS4 might come to the 360" article was 10x what we're seeing here about Mass Effect. So don't go all "high road" on me now.
Personally I own both so console exclusives don't really matter to me other than making sure both consoles have enough to provide competition (lower prices, better games overall) with each other, and as was mentioned above the 360 is certainly not hurting there so this one game doesn't really matter much to me.
Oh, and did someone just try and claim that Gears plays better on the PC than the 360? Good lord man did you read even 5 words of the PC reviews of the game before making that inane statement? That is of course not even factoring in that it came out A FULL YEAR LATER on the PC and has a much smaller online community.
Seriously, if Colinbell's post gets anything less than a "lowest ranked" I'm going to lose faith in this community entirely.

Stop lying. Those games all have higher scores on their console. Even The Orange Box was better received on 360 than PC. I personally prefer a controller to kbm, just for the privilege of PC players scoffing at me.

Kameo was not trash at all, it was the first or second game I picked up with the 360. I personally enjoyed the game alot, it reminded me of the zelda series for some reason. Awesome character design, graphics, story and it just rocked.

i got reamed the other day cause they had a post about Mass Effect 2 over on X3Fanboy and i politely asked about it's exclusivity and the possibility of it coming to PS3 since the EA/Bioware deal. sure seems like a touchy subject lol. now you know how us Playstation fans felt (considering it does come to PS3) when Microsoft got alot of our exclusives to go multiplatform (im looking at you GTAIV and DMC4).
even if its a timed exclusive, you guys really have nothing to worry about since most will buy on 360 anyway. it does seem like a good series though based on hearsay so i would pick it up if i had a little extra cash and it came to PS3.
and even if it doesnt come to PS3, i could pick it up on PC like most good 360 games. win, win.

C'mon man.....
1. ONE guy responded to you negatively. I would hardly call that a "reaming".
2. Don't play all innocent here, you're all over these blogs all day like the rest of us, and it was obvious to anyone that recognized your name that you would know the very second Mass Effect was announced for the PS3 as it would be huge on every one of the blogs in this network. It was obvious you already knew the answer to the question, which means there's only one reason you would've asked it in the first place....as bait for guys like the (one) guy who negatively responded to it.

If your a playstation fan, why are you even on the xbox blog? Your just asking for trouble. And mass effect 2 will never come to ps3. Get over it. And even if it somehow does do you really want to play the second without playing the first? Do yourself a favor and buy a 360 or gaming pc rather then wonder why your ps3 is not getting all the good games.

ok well maybe "reamed" was an over exaggeration but i see you got my point regardless. and furthermore, i didnt use the question as fanboy bait. what the hell kind of enjoyment would i get out of that? i asked a serious question and i hadnt seen any other post about Mass Effect lately so the first one i saw i thought id ask. and Joystiq isnt always the fastest on relaying new fresh news (you can at least agree with me on that). go to N4g.com or Kotaku and look at all the new stories and then time how long it takes for them to appear on Joystiq.
and dude i dont want a 360. the majority of the games simply dont appeal to me (besides Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, and maybe Lost Odyssey. alot of my friends have 360's so i do play them from time to time but they just dont strike me as something i would like to buy. im not buying the thing for it to sit and collect dust. different people like different things. i dont feel like typing out all of my reasons for not wanting to buy one so go check my posting history, ive said it many times before.

If its a timed exclusive for the 360, I'm good... I could care less if the PC gets it down the line.. At the same time EA will try to weasel its way to the PS3, but theres gotta be something that M$ has with M.E. contractually that prevents the PS3 to get it.
Keep crying SDF, and keep fading comments that speak the TRUTH about your fave PS3.. BTW, Pro Evolution Soccer for the PS3 has terrible framerate issues.. The 360/Wii/PS2 versions have not...
just thought I'd throw some more salt on the wound..

"What the flipping hell is wrong with the PS3 having this game too?
If you like the series, wouldn't you simply want as many people to play it as possible?"
The day developers can flip a switch to port a game, is the day I won't care if a 360 exclusive goes multiplatform. Having multiplatform game after multiplatform game delayed gets old fast. A PC port is no problem, because it will come later, but first and fore most because of how easy it is to port games from the 360 to the PC and vice versa.
Either way, you more then likely won't have to worry about ME going to the ps3. Microsoft atleast owned the rights to the first game. When EA announced the PC port, they mentioned they came to an agreement with Microsoft on the title. A ps3 port announcement was notably absent. If Microsoft had enough imput, that EA had to come to an agreement with them. ME 1 won't reach the ps3.
Therefore ME 2 & 3 won't reach the ps3. For a few reasons.
1. Consumers respond less to sequels to franshises that are foreign to them.
2. Bioware has a longer history with working console exclusive for Microsoft. (ME, Jade Empire, KOTOR).
3. The bioware team has talked a little about ME 2 on their forums. The second game will utilize the save from the first. so you can play ME 2 as your old shepards. So in ME 2 you will get your equipment from ME 1, levels from ME 1, face from ME 1, and paragon/ renegage status from ME 1. Further more, choices made in the first game will affect your game in ME 2 in " unexpected ways".
Examples (spoilers):
- If you saved the Rachni queen, maybe that comes back to bite you on the ass. Or maybe if you save her, the rachni assist you in some way.
- Maybe if you chose to not kill any of the colonies on Feroes, and you spared the Asari the colony will be rebuilt in ME 2.
- If you chose to give the body of the women who served with Ashely back to her husband nothing happens. But if you chose to let the military experiment on the body, anti- synthentic armour begins to appear in the game.
Basically if the ps3 got a ME 2 port, the game would be incomplete. They would probably have to alter their plans for the game, and the end product would be less ambitious. Due to the ps3 owners not having a saved file from the first game.
Anyways, for many reasons, I don't think you will see ME 2 on the ps3. Which simply means we will get the game a good 2-6 months earlier. Sleep a little earlier 360 owners, no GTA style delays for ME. As for players who only own a ps3, buy a 360 or upgrade your computer if you really want to play ME.

Recently, I've contemplated that I've been a lackwit in another aspect my stated opinions: I'd actually favor timed exclusives to a solid exclusive. While it favors the console it comes out on in sales, the follow ups are appreciated. I played Oblivion on my PS3 after all.
So if timed exclusives assist the console masters pride and sales, but grant me access all the cool games then more power to that concept. And though it hurts, by all the power vested in me I grant 360, Wii, and PC owners access to MSG4 and Final Fantasy titles after a suitable delay.

To Colinbell.
Halo 3 only had one release date, september 25 2007. It made the release date. When bill Gates made that comment, he didn't know jack shit about Halo 3. Internally Bungie didn't even know definitively when the game was going to be released. The launch window for the game was still a moving target. Hence why Bill gates retracted his comments the next day, saying he didn't mean the game would be released the same day. But that the game would end up releasing early in the ps3s life cycle.
And Too Human was originally going to be a PS one game. But the game kept getting delayed, mostly because silicon knights is ambitious and doesn't ship half finished games. And because new generations of consoles kept coming out. Opening up the possibilities to full fill there vision to its fullests potential.
Theres a big difference between delaying a game because your ambitious, or because you want the game to be the best it can. And delaying a game because one of the games versions is falling behind and you want to release all versions at the same time to save money.

name, generally in a buyout like this one, there are clauses that maintain previous agreements up to a certain amount of time.
A corporation is a legal entity in itself. When ownership is passed, those legal deals of exclusivity with the corporation go with it.

It's awesome that the game will be on PC and 360. Who the fuck cares which platforms you play it on - is it really that big a deal if other people get to play a great game on a different platform? Seriously... stop bitching bout exclusivity. Accept it when it happens, and cherish it when a great game is made available to multiple platforms. Devs do the gaming community a service by making it available to more people.
