Rumor: GTA IV multiplayer to boast 15 modes, 16 players

The kids at GTAforums.com got their covetous mitts all over the latest issue of PSM Spain, which just so happens to feature an extensive writeup of Grand Theft Auto IV's thus far still undetailed multiplayer. Thanks to their translation efforts, we've got some potential details on what we're going to go out on a limb to say will be one of the most popular multiplayer games of the year.

There are purportedly fifteen multiplayer game modes (full list after the break) with support for up to sixteen, totally customizable players. The gametypes they sampled included two racing variants; two deathmatch variants (team-based and free-for-all); two mission-based "Mafia" variants; and a co-op version of a single-player mission. Of course, God is in the details, and after being spoiled by the elegant multiplayer systems in games like Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, we've got equally high expectations for GTA IV.

This better not be an April Fool's joke. There's satirical and clearly laughable (i.e. Nintendo giving up gaming and focusing on doily manufacturing) and then there's cruel and unnecessary.

Free Mode is the most exciting. Being able to drive/goof around in the entire city with friends is some sweet, sweet stuff.

I'll only be excited if they allow you to bring guests into the mix. Saints Rows' multiplayer was kind of lame cuz not everyone I like to play games with owns an Xbox.

Saint's Row multiplayer was lame because it wasn't in an open city. It was a crippled version of a small area.

really? Crackdown looks a helluva lot better to me than this. not more realistic, by any means, but more pleasing to look at. kinda like saying team fortress 2 looks better than half-life 2

the multiplayer is the only reason I may or may not be buying gta4. Why is rockstarkeeping it a secret so late? Does it blow ultra hard or something that they cant reveal it?

That's a large part of it too, but I probably could've dealed. GTAIV will probably have large maps, but I doubt I'll get much playtime in if I can't get all my friends in. Maybe I'll just invest in a PS3?

How's a PS3 goning to help you? If it wasn't for that fucking boat anchor, we'd all have been playing this game almost 5 months ago.

Not sure why this is marked as rumor. They say in the scans that they've played at least a few of these modes (enjoying Cops and Robbers in particular). And other magazines are supposedly coming out with their GTAIV multiplayer details in the next few weeks. Print gaming journalists have already played the multiplayer.

damn 16 players would be awesome. me and my friends used to play the multiplayer on the PSP GTA games and i can say that they were LOADS of fun. LCS was really glitchy and if you knew what you were doing, you could use the glitches to your advantage (opponents cant shoot you if you run in circles around them til they have to reload, etc.) but VCS cleaned up the majority of those glitches. putting that experience online with friends and random people would be one of the greatest things ever. if they can get it anywhere near that PSP experience with online, i would be a very happy man.

If you look at GTA's history, Rockstar has never released much information.

I think this game has the potential of being Game of the year.

God I can't wait for this fucking game. I put down $10 for this today.

SA-MP (San Andreas Multiplayer) and MultiTheftAuto have been adding multiplayer functionality to GTA PC. Rooms could hold up to 36 players in MTA and 100 players in SA-MP. The amazing thing is the amount of modes because these apps only had like Deathmatch, Racing, Stunts and Manhunt (one person chased by everyone in server). I hope 15 is manhunt! That mode would be the sickest yet :). Imagine rows of cars chasing one person down for cash or something :).

I'm interested. I've been playing too much San Andreas to really care about smaller GTAs now, but multiplayer does help (no SA multiplayer on Steam version).

We'll see Rockstar! I've liked all the other games you've pulled out, barring the original GTA3. My word I want to play GTA now.

NO kidding, multiplayer of any kind is just icing on the cake at this point.

Judging from the attention to detail they seem to have put into the rest of the game, it should be pretty freakin' sweet.
