The Incredible Hulk captured in screenshots

Click to embiggen. That's right, we said "embiggen."
It's a Banner year for Sega, with the publisher getting ready to unleash The Incredible Hulk this June alongside the Edward Norton-starring film and franchise reboot. Marvel's green goon will be gleefully smashing things on just about every platform imaginable (sorry, PSP!) in what we hope will be similar gameplay to that found in 2005's The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.
Sega promises that no building will be left unscathed as you do battle with classic Hulk villains such as Abomination, Bi-Beast and, judging by the background of the above screenshot, Mister Clip. "Muahaha, you call those collisions, Hulk? I can barely detect them! Etc!"

The number of polygons that make up the Hulk model is 'incredible'
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 14th 2008 6:42PM
Or just bump mapping.
dynnnbag @ Mar 14th 2008 6:47PM
He's just normal mapped. It is a difficult and time consuming process to normal map a character, i'm just surprised sega even bothered
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 14th 2008 7:13PM
Not nearly enough as DOA uses for breasts :)
playwhutyalike @ Mar 14th 2008 6:36PM
Bi-Beast, huh? Introducing Destructo-Tranny.
moominsean @ Mar 14th 2008 6:38PM
looks like crazy taxi with the hulk.
Nickel @ Mar 14th 2008 6:44PM
Hulk's model looks decent. but damn everything else looks hella ugly.
Rollins @ Mar 14th 2008 7:03PM
Hopefully it looks better in motion?
vidGuy @ Mar 14th 2008 6:51PM
Is that a NSFW ad on the bus I see?
Alex R @ Mar 14th 2008 6:52PM
AI of the civilians may not be too great... I'm predicting worse-than-Assassin's-Creed kind of behaviour. Look at picture 5/14. A huge green guy is smashing stuff up but the people are just walking about. Indeedy.
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 14th 2008 7:14PM
Hulk Theft Auto, city the size of GTA, except, this time, you're invincible, you don't drive cars, just throw them, YAY!
whatever @ Mar 14th 2008 7:16PM
Really? People are gonna moan about clipping? Well guess what?! Pong had NO clipping, if clipping makes or breaks a game, play that.
Cutty @ Mar 14th 2008 7:25PM
Is The Incredible Hulk suffering from the next-gen effect? He looks more brown than green.
Chris @ Mar 14th 2008 7:27PM
The Hulk has a shadow but none of the vehicles do.
While the Hulk himself looks impressive everything else looks like generic video game ass. Like those Coke ad's or that Chilli peppers video made to look like a generic game world.
Marty @ Mar 14th 2008 7:30PM
Erm... didn't they already made a Hulk game like 4 years ago?
Dustin @ Mar 14th 2008 7:33PM
Haha... wow. Mr. Clip. That made me lol.
I want someone to make a game that parodies bad video games. Kind of like what the creators of Scary Movie, Epic Movie, etc. do.
Except... don't make the game as bad of a game as Epic movie was of a movie.
Phi Nguyen @ Mar 16th 2008 10:08AM
I love Sudoku! LOL.
forestofdeath @ Mar 14th 2008 7:49PM
that is the fugliest city i have ever seen.
BIGGEN @ Mar 14th 2008 9:02PM
see, i was hoping so hard for this gen of graphics to be able to round out things that are supposed to be, ya know, round. not that octahexapolygonal shit going on around the bus tires. or in most shooters, the barrels of the guns. the only ones that have really addressed that is capcom. sorry, just a HUGE peeve i have.
ark_keeper @ Mar 15th 2008 8:02AM
Looks like the Iron Man team is doing a much better job:

Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Mar 14th 2008 10:03PM
ugh. Why couldn't they just get the team that did Ultimate Destruction. Now that was an awesome Hulk game.
Kaioh @ Mar 15th 2008 12:14AM
I completely agree. I still own Ultimate Destruction. More games need the engine that it uses. Combining that engine and the Unreal engine would quite possibly make the best game ever.
Seriously, Ultimate Destruction is the game I go into when I am angry and feel like destroying a bunch of buildings for no reason other than the fact I am angry.
It's quite theraputic. :D
Ihavepants @ Mar 15th 2008 12:37AM
Because they're making that other thing?
You know with the guy and blood and buildings and whatnot.
Pretty sure there are bad army peoples in it as well.
the_insider @ Mar 16th 2008 2:57AM
@Kaioh:
check out "Prototype"... ;)
Ihavepants @ Mar 16th 2008 8:13AM
@ The Insider
Shhh, don't make it too obvious.
I wanted them to work their little heads.
Batzarro @ Mar 14th 2008 10:32PM
Joystiq: Stop it with the "embiggen" thing: It's not cromulent, anymore!
As for the pic...looks good enought.
Ihavepants @ Mar 15th 2008 6:50AM
No... it doesn't.
t_m @ Mar 15th 2008 10:15AM
it doesnt embiggen by much...
CB @ Mar 15th 2008 5:19PM
that's what she said
Jeremiah Moon @ Mar 14th 2008 11:41PM
heh.
"Banner" year.
Try as I may, I can't quite decide whether that was intentional or not.
Nickel @ Mar 14th 2008 11:45PM
i actually really enjoyed ultimate destruction. and sega lets me down more often than not. i cant even remember the last decent game sega made.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Mar 15th 2008 1:54AM
*cough cough*
Condemned.
Nickel @ Mar 16th 2008 1:08AM
Sega published condemned, monolith developed it. i shoulda been more specific.
Mr.ESC @ Mar 16th 2008 4:04PM
Crush.
dantebk @ Mar 15th 2008 1:26AM
Ultimate Destruction was one of my favorite all-time games. If they can come close to recapturing that magic I'll be a happy camper. Fingers crossed!

Rumor has it the game plays like Ultimate Destruction, but I don't know. I don't think the whole screenshot looks bad, just...lazy. Rather than picking an art direction that the whole game could benefit from, they went overboard on the Hulk, then couldn't keep up that level of detail (or that particular gritty art-style) for the rest of the game world. And rather than hard-coding the edges of the polygonal characters to avoid clipping, they just said screw it and saved a ton of room.
I, personally, don't need everything to look as good as possible from a distance. K.I.S.S. If a game looks consistent and plays well, the graphical level is meaningless. If it looks hacked together, on the other hand...
t_m @ Mar 15th 2008 10:22AM
Well, he has the same "car gloves" in one of the screenshots as he had in ultimate destruction.
Actually, it kinda makes sense to put most of the effort into the hulk model.. he's the one on screen all the time, he's the character that people want to "be".
If it plays like UD then all the rest is just gonna get smashed up or fly by at highspeed anyway. If its as fully destructible as everything in UD then that'd probably explain the lower poly parts.
ark_keeper @ Mar 15th 2008 7:58AM
I'd rather you just link to the source so 'embiggen' actually makes them BIG instead slightly less small.

Mr.ESC @ Mar 16th 2008 4:09PM
I love Sega and I sure like The Hulk even when its villain’s kind of suck but hell the only Marvel characters with good Villains are the Xmen, Spiderman and the Fantastic Four well some FF are Villains are good.
The game it self looks decent but Hulk looks kind of gray also that Mr “Who needs to detect object collision” over there makes the whole thing look bad. Well at least isn’t like EA’s bullshot.
If Iron-man results good I would keep an eye on this, I’m still a Sega fanboy.
hvnlysoldr @ Mar 30th 2008 2:57PM
Collision detection and Banner(Hulk) puns were laugh worthy.
