Bungie to release Halo 3 "Legendary Map Pack" details Tuesday

Fans of Bungie's fight-finishing FPS were undoubtedly pleased to learn last month that Halo 3, though falling behind in the Xbox Live activity rankings, is in no danger of going to the cybernetically-enhanced dogs, as it were. The map-crafting wizards at Bungie are already hard at work on a new trio of downloadable arenas -- the eight-man, objective-oriented "Ghost Town" was revealed during GDC, the other two remain shrouded in mystery.
However, much like fresh Milano cookies at an Oprah's Book Club meeting, mysteries on the internet don't last very long. Bungie announced in a recent weekly update that they will reveal the second leg of their DLC tripod this coming Tuesday, dropping hints in the form of four images of the vehicles that will be playable on the map. Either these rigs have suffered a vicious antiquing, or the new map will be set in a crystalline winter wonderland -- we do so hope it's accompanied by a "Spartan Snow Angel" playlist.

That little voice inside my head is going:
"yes, Yes, YES, nooooooo" Oh well, at least if it releases, instead of hearing details I'd be a happier bunny ¬_¬

When do the last maps that came out become free?
Matt_M @ Mar 15th 2008 3:44PM
When the Legendary map pack comes out, the Heroic maps become free.
David @ Mar 15th 2008 4:42PM
Yay for being so incredibly cheap. I'm anxiously waiting for the Legendary Map Pack to download Heroic ones.
ssuk @ Mar 15th 2008 8:41PM
Fuck paying more for DLC, I already spent £50 on the Collectors edition. Like fuck I'm paying more.
Gregorius @ Mar 15th 2008 10:42PM
I will probably buy the Legendary Pack, this way it feels like I get 6 maps for ten bucks.
Obie @ Mar 15th 2008 11:05PM
Nice! Getting Halo 3 maps for free finally and the COD4 maps on the way....heck I would not mind paying for those. ;)
Envoy @ Mar 15th 2008 10:12PM

"...is in no danger of going to the cybernetically-enhanced dogs"
actually, the drop from #1 to #2 says otherwise. while it's not that big a fall it's pretty significant when you consider just how long Halo 2 held the top spot (and continues to this day).
it's obvious why people are jumping ship to CoD4. the "heroic" map pack (takes a lot nerve to say that with a straight face) was a joke. three maps for $10 and all of a sudden you're down from the number one spot. that's not a coincidence and you think MS would've learned something from that.
instead what they're doing is fleecing fans (who've already poured millions into this franchise) with this bread crumb-bullshit of 3 maps for $10 while trying to absolve themselves by saying they'll be free in say oh...six or so months. that's not a choice people, that's a lack of options. there's a difference. and like any cause/affect scenario, gamers (like myself) have walked away from halo3 to CoD4.
like i said, it's no coincidence.
343 Guilty Fart @ Mar 15th 2008 9:02PM
Just wait until they charge you $10 for CoD maps.
carg0 @ Mar 15th 2008 9:36PM
if it's no less than 5 maps, then yea i'll pay $10. that's a fair deal.
Obie @ Mar 15th 2008 11:06PM
Cuz COD4 maps might actually be worth the beans.
Roxxorsmash @ Mar 16th 2008 12:54AM
Well, according to Bungie, Microsoft was the culprit responsible for setting the 10$ price on the Heroic map pack. I'm just afraid the Legendary pack is going to be 10$ for another 3 maps. And just so it's out there, the CoD4 pack is 4 maps, I believe.
Youthinized @ Mar 16th 2008 1:40AM
C'mon, 3 maps for 10 bucks? That doesn't even sound close to right. When Epic released their second map pack, wasn't it 4 for 10? And even Epic released some free maps to begin with. This is the biggest franchise on the 360 and we can't have some phree stuff?
Shitty Guitar Hero III puts out free stuff to sway all the Rock Band players, but we're still not biting.
tommy @ Mar 16th 2008 5:52AM
haha im far to cool to play a fun game such as halo ...
Austin @ Mar 16th 2008 10:06AM
Meh it's better than the Cod map pack maybe if they get some new geometry for their maps i will go pack to Cod because when ever I play that game it feels like I'm playing he same three maps over and over and over.
Mr.ESC @ Mar 16th 2008 3:30PM
I bought the Heroic maps and well I wasted 800p.I'm not buying this.
Now that I would pay for new maps for TF2.
Dustin @ Mar 16th 2008 6:43PM
I think that Bungie would do much better to release a free map or two at the same time as priced maps. This way, they could garner some interest from all halo fans, and who knows, maybe they'd change some minds about paying for maps.
Soulcrux42 @ Mar 17th 2008 3:25AM
Honestly. If you don't think that the price is worth it: Don't buy them then! They said they were going to be free eventually, so there you go. I bought the maps when they first came out because I thought they'd be good. I basically payed 10 bucks for Forge. And like Arby n' the Chief's Arbiter said, the sandbox idea should have been something that shipeed with the game. I don't see how releasing 2 "meh" maps and 1 cool one for 10 dollars could've been the culprit of the move from 1 to 2. I think people just prefer CoD 4's multiplayer to Halo 3. Theres a whole lot more weapons, multiplayer is more balanced, theres alot more potential to it. And most of all- Halo 3's got some freaking morons playing.
Anyway, It's good that the Legendary maps are coming out, because people will be able to get the first ones for free, especially Forge. I'm still going to buy the new maps, because even If they might not be that good, at least its new.
Ganonymous @ Mar 18th 2008 3:22PM
I feel the maps could be less of a cost, but we have Microsoft to blame for that. I do like the spacing of the maps, 3 months is almost perfect for new content. And seeing as there are 2 maps we know of that aren't making this pack, it's easy to see yet another map pack in the near future.
As for "cottonball" i'm hoping it's a remake of Ice Fields from Halo PC. Any Halo PC exclusive map would be great.
thewookiee069 @ Mar 18th 2008 9:50PM
the only map really worth it was standoff and forge just because you could make any kind of map. These new maps however look to be even better than the last ones and if theres a scorpian tank AND a hornet on the snow map its gunna have to be as big as Valhalla if not bigger and probably will contribute to hours of exciting gameplay
Nick @ Mar 19th 2008 12:43AM
Umm...Tuesday has now come and gone here in the USA Central time zone. Where's the update Bungie?
james @ Mar 23rd 2008 1:31AM

bh bellard @ Apr 3rd 2008 6:47PM
hayyyy new maps come out april 15th 12 more days....................................
EternalVagrance @ Apr 11th 2008 7:34PM
Well, the new maps have been revealed and there are some footage of the new maps on the marketplace, all free of course.
Ghost town: In africa, on the outskirts of a jungle, can do alot of cool stuff on forge there like changing the environment colour.
Avalanche: As you all know a classic remade of Sidewinder from Halo C.E, Can put proper sniper towers on that level.
Blackout: Also classic remade from halo 2's Lockout
Based on a weather station on the outskirts of antartica.
Very cool maps and are out this tuesday.
I'm definately going to be paying for these.
Hifeno @ Apr 14th 2008 8:39PM
Bungie has stated on there website that there is no chance of the these maps ever becoming free. So nows the time to buy them just because they are giving away bungie pro for 4 months free for anyone who buys them just after they come out.
nate @ Apr 21st 2008 7:59AM
cod4 is bullshit... it is nothing compared to halo 3....the heroic maps are free know and it's only ten buck... watch x- play u cheap bastard, carg0.
