Xbox 360 to have over 1,000 titles by Summer 2008, says MS rep

If there's one thing we appreciate about a home console, it's prolificacy -- and for quite some time now, the PS2 has claimed top honors in that respect. Sony's last-gen system currently holds the console record for having the most games (with more than 1600 titles), which we never expected to be toppled in this day and age, where console generations seem to pass more and more like smoke through a keyhole as technology continues to advance.
However, according to Chris Lewis, the Xbox Vice Prez for Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Europe, the 360 might yet pass the PS2 in its lifetime, as the system, he claims, will play host to over 1,000 games by this summer. While this news may come as a boon to MSoft fanboys, keep in mind that this doesn't mean there will be 1,000 good games for the system -- lest we forget, for every Bioshock that makes its way to store shelves, there will be an unavoidable handful of Bomberman: Act Zeroes.

Every system has it's fair share of great games, Plus a greatly larger share of Super Crapware.
WhoMe @ Mar 15th 2008 5:13PM
Yeah esp. the Wii. :p

Watch MS drop the 360 like a brick as soon as the 720 hits. Just like they did with the original xbox, thanks for that btw MS!
nutman @ Mar 15th 2008 5:39PM
That is pretty crazy that the 360 will only be 600 titles behind the PS2 come summer.
Btw WhoMe, you're retarded. They dropped the Xbox because they had to get a new console out ASAP or the Xbox brand would die. They cut their losses on the Xbox and moved on. Thats not happening this time because they have no reason to do so. It's actually in their best interests to keep the 360 around for a long time like what Sony is doing with the PS2.

"Watch MS drop the 360 like a brick as soon as the 720 hits. Just like they did with the original xbox, thanks for that btw MS!"
See this is the attitude that's pissing me off. What Microsoft did was normal. Remember Snes, playstation and the n64? They did the same exact thing. The only, and I will repeat myself the only reason why Ps2 managed to not follow the 5 year cycle,is because it managed to sell hardware and software well beyond it's generation. The ps2 is the exception, not the rule. Which is why I don't buy the whole 10 year system thing. Sure the ps3 is doing much better than it was when it launched, but it's no ps2. It's not going to blow away the other consoles like the ps2 does. So don't be surprised if Sony does the same thing and releases the ps4 well before the ps3's supposed 10 year cycle is up.
j.hewlit @ Mar 15th 2008 9:25PM
i remember the PSONE and still finding a few new games and greatest hits when the PS2 was out
License to ill @ Mar 15th 2008 9:53PM
Get your facts right vegeta Sony didn't drop ps1 like micro dropped xbox, it was still selling 2 years after ps2 came out. And micro dropped xbox because they didn't own any of the parts and couldn't cut manufacturing cost down, so they just cut their losses...
Synner @ Mar 16th 2008 3:17PM
Will you douchebags PLEASE stop saying xbox 720? it sounds fucking retarded, and there is no way MS will name a new console this.
360 is supposed to stand for a completely rounded experience according to MS's douches.
Do you really think that MS is going to put some bullshit spin about "we called it 720 because it's so awesome you'll go around twice to play it?"
Auugh you sound fucking retarded.
Jag @ Mar 15th 2008 4:38PM
The Wii will pass it one day. But there's so much shovelware on the Wii, you could use the system to dig a trench. Which would be about the only thing it's good for.
Watership @ Mar 15th 2008 4:41PM
I completely agree. The amount of shovelware being put out on the wii is incredible. Each week there is one or two PS3/Xbox 360 games for ever 5 Wii games.
BIGGEN @ Mar 15th 2008 5:47PM
yeeaaah, i'm gonna have to go ahead and agree with you there. i figure, i had already played zelda, metroid, mario galaxy, wario ware, and a couple others. brawl was not on my radar because to me, the wii is so unstable for online play that a fighting game against the computer or just versus is no fun to me. mario kart was shitty on the cube, so i lost interest there and quite frankly there is NO third party games worth it to me that i couldn't get better on the ps3 or 360. so, my wii was sold on ebay for a cool $500 and i thank that fool that bought it. crapware, shitware, shovelware, whatever you call it, the wii and ds both have plenty of it. more so than the 360 or ps3 or even the psp. anyway, i'm done. thanks for reading.
Nick Ritch @ Mar 15th 2008 5:49PM
The reason this is so prevalent with the wii is
1. It is the cheapest to develop for of the "next gen" systems.
2. It has a large install base "many of which are non-gamers or "casual gamers" that don't know any better.
BIGGEN @ Mar 15th 2008 6:03PM
@Nick Ritch
seriously, those two 'excuses' are probably dead on from nintendo's stand point (and many third parties). and because of that, the wii will never be more than what it is (and it could have been great). and that, to me, is so unfortunate that it makes me question buying their next gimmick, er, console.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Mar 15th 2008 7:22PM
@biggen
And how are those excuses especially since those are the exact reasons why the Wii has so many crap games? It's the cheapest to make(meaning the developers don't have to put as much effort into making a game) and that the install base is made up of casual gamers. Developers see games like Brain age and Wii fit selling like hot cakes so they make those kind of games and make them as cheaply as possible. Then of course when they see their games fail, instead of blaming themselves they go ahead and blame nintendo.
Which is sad.
Platinum_Skeet @ Mar 16th 2008 9:55AM
Looks like Nintendo needs to bring back the "Nintendo Seal of Quality"...
Edge @ Mar 15th 2008 4:41PM
You hammer on B:AZ, but I'm a huge fan of films like Cube so I really enjoyed that game. Granted it was a crock of shit for the price, but if you find it in the bargain bin, it is reasonable fun.
Also, finishing 100 levels without dying is one hardcore feat you should try. It was more fun than you realize.
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 15th 2008 4:42PM
The most succesful console of each generation gets the most games. That's obvious.
360 has the year advantage, but If the 360 can have 1,000 titles, there's no doubt that the Will will reach the same amount.
It's like the PS2... 1,600 games... with like 1,300 shovelware Wii-Ninjabread-like type of games.
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 15th 2008 4:49PM
But generally, Nintendo have the most aclaimed titles in each generation.
The most highly rated from last gen was Metroid Prime 1 and the Gamecube version of Resident Evil 4, and this gen until date, is Super Mario Galaxy.
Same in the N64 era... the best rated game was The Ocarina of Time...
So, when people think in the Wii shovelware, blame third party developers for being so unprofessionals... just remember, Nintendo make gems.
Geist @ Mar 15th 2008 5:15PM
I find the greatest spectrum of quality on the Wii. Some of the best games are on it, but some of the worst as well.
Maverick Saturn @ Mar 15th 2008 5:16PM
Do you always reply to yourself, I've noticed its become a trend.
Saying that, does this include XBLA games? Must be. Only explanation I can think of atm.

no genius HALO was. I didnt like it but still. Mario galazy funny...that didnt win game of the year so how can it be best game of this cycle... and zelda on 64 im sure gran turismo sold more. on PS1 so

I'm talking about rankings, reviews... average rankings...
http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp?rankings=y
And last game of the year was Bioshock in some magazines/websites and Mario Galaxy in other magazines/websites. Half and half.
Mario Galaxy is the second best rating game, just below Ocarina of Time.
Noshino @ Mar 15th 2008 11:18PM
Fernando...you are pretty good at checking Nintendo facts huh? you should give metacritic another visit, the PS2 had Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and Xbox had Halo also rated at 97...
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 15th 2008 11:27PM
Noshino
Please, oh please... check thing first... in Metacritic, Pro Skater 2 have a higher score than in Gamerankigs... why? Because if you check well, in Metacritic they just included 18 reveiws... obviosuly the average is going to be higher... Metroid Prime has 70 reviews in Metacritic...
Both sites use the same review sites... obviosly, the more sites they add, the more the average score gets low...
Like Mario Galaxy, at first, with 15 reviews, was above Mario Galaxy, with a 99% in average score.
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 15th 2008 11:28PM
*Above Ocarina of Time
Noshino @ Mar 15th 2008 11:51PM

First, I never mentioned THPS2, Im talking about THPS3...
"Because if you check well, in Metacritic they just included 18 reveiws... obviosuly the average is going to be higher... "
Not really, you can have 200 sites that might have a preference towards the developer/franchise/platform and thus give better reviews, to back up that statement Fernando, you will pretty much have to do a report stating the preferences of each one of the sites that reviewed the games...
Oh, and also, you have to remember that this title, THPS3, was multiplatform, so unlike Metroid Prime which was build frmo the ground up for the NGC, THPS3 was developed for PS2, NGC, GBC and PS1...and months after on N64, Xbox...
Like I stated, last generation, IMO and of many reviewers alike, THPS3 was the best reviewed game...
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 16th 2008 12:38AM
Noshino... I meant Pro Skater 3, that was just a typo... dont try to cover your ass with a typo.
You can't deny that Nintendo makes excellent games... did you saw the thread like a week ago about the best developers?
Guess who is the first place? Or course, Nintendo.
Noshino, you can bash everything you want, but Nintendo makes excellent titles. Titles that are going to be in the history of the videogames.
C'mon... Pro Skaters 3? With that game you want to take the first place to Nintendo? You are better than that Noshino.
Raikage (LDF CRAB BATTLE!!!) @ Mar 16th 2008 2:44AM
Yeah Noshino, weaksause.
Nintendo has always been the most consistent in making amazing games, that is FACT.
Noshino @ Mar 16th 2008 2:45AM
"Noshino... I meant Pro Skater 3, that was just a typo... dont try to cover your ass with a typo."
Err, Im not covering my ass, I mentioned the typo because the 18 reviews you are talking about are for THPS2 and not 3...
"You can't deny that Nintendo makes excellent games... did you saw the thread like a week ago about the best developers?"
When did I say that they don't make them? you are just implying that they make the best games and that nothing ever matches them
"Guess who is the first place? Or course, Nintendo."
Just like SCEA is the best publisher? I know that Nintendo is great, but I have yet to see you accept the other study which showed SCEA being above Nintendo as far as Publishing goes
"Noshino, you can bash everything you want, but Nintendo makes excellent titles. Titles that are going to be in the history of the videogames."
Fernando, Im not bashing Nintendo, I KNOW that they make great titles (although I don't like them all), Im a diehard fanboy of Intelligent Systems (I want a true FE! there is no challenge on the newer ones anymore!), I was just replying to your comments on regards of Nintendo having had the best reviewed game last generation, which I proved you that it is tied between other two titles
"C'mon... Pro Skaters 3? With that game you want to take the first place to Nintendo? You are better than that Noshino."
I don't want totake the first place away from Nintendo, I just want to show you that last generation they were matched by other 2 titles...and more important that one of those titles was a multiplatform game...
You know what, its funny because now you aren't even showing me your facts and all, you are just trying to claim that I hate Nintendo so you can disregard everything else I showed you...
John McPoop @ Mar 16th 2008 5:39AM
@Fernando
If I remember correct Sony was the #1 rated publisher of 2007 not Nintendo (let me guess you have a reason why Sony lucked into the #1 spot). Everyone knows you are the hardest of the hardcore Nintendo fanboys and its pretty obvious to me that you make multiple comments and vote all of your own comments up (sad and pathetic). Lets see some proof on your claim that half of the sites out there (other than in Fernando Land) gave Galaxy 2007 GOTY because I think that is BS. I could see half for Orange Box or COD 4 but not Galaxy after all the game had slightly upgraded Mario Sunshine graphics. Nintendo could make a game about a gorilla racing on exploding barrels and you would say it was revolutionary =)
You bitch about the PS3 not having rumble but your awfully mum on SSBB needing a classic controller to enjoy the game or make it even playable (I had to buy 2). And BTW I think 6-axis and rumble are unnecessary and do not add to immersion. I also think the Wii-mote is gimmicky and annoying at best.
The Wii is easily the worst system in terms of sheer horsepower, games, additional features and online capabilities. With all of the super strict online controls, multiple friend codes and no chat this is obviously a system designed from the ground up for little children. I am sure some parents appreciate those protections but for the adult gamer these are annoying at best. At times I appreciate the nostalgic feel, ingenuity and cartoon like Nintendo characters and games but in general these things seem to effect me less in a positive way. There are a handful of fun Wii games and all of them are either Nintendo first party franchises ad Capcom games and ports. The Wii has nothing in terms of additional features sans a weather channel and web browser (500 points now). The Wii Ware games will run $10.00-$15.00 which is to high and can not be played from the SD cards. Again, this is a shining example of your Nintendo bias in giving them a free pass for an epic fail.
I have owned just about every console since the NES days so I grew up a Nintendo fan. But, to blindly follow a company and console manufacturer and spread rhetoric to fuel propaganda is irresponsible and wrong. Facts are facts and opinion is opinion this is something you have a hard time grasping. When you use facts only when they are suitable to your argument you are being highly disingenuous. IMO Nintendo gets a free pass and it could have to do with the fact the reviewers actually love the games or it could be becase there is such a lack of quality titles that it makes a good game look great. I imagine Wii Fit will sell over a million copies and in that situation sales will be your barometer for success instead of reviews.
In closing, you are a total idiot fanboy who is not funny or logical, manipulate data and situations to fit your current argument, BUTCHER the english language and most pathetic of all you post multiple times in the same thread to up vote yourself. Your Pathetic.
Jag @ Mar 15th 2008 4:43PM
The ratio on the Wii is much worse, and anyone who doesn't think so is just kidding themselves.
License to ill @ Mar 15th 2008 10:13PM
All you got to do is look at Metacritic, Wii has the worst gaming score average. Wii like the previous two Nintendo systems only has great first party support...
SKI @ Mar 16th 2008 10:17AM
But things like ratio or averages can be misleading,
like if there is a 5:1 ration of shovelware to AAA, that wouldn't be so bad if there are 1000 games out. On the other hand a 2:1 would suck if there is only like 300 games available.
SoulBlade @ Mar 15th 2008 4:43PM
That's not counting XBLA games is it? That's pretty cool about the 1,000 mark, but yea... I'm sure the majority of them aren't that great like any other console's library.
PSN: KillaKornbread (the shirt is a lie!) @ Mar 15th 2008 4:55PM
thats what i was wondering. it would make sense that they are included but still, 1,000 games is 1,000 games and 360 does have its fair share of good ones out of that crop. it just seemed like if PS2 got 1,600 in 7 years and the 360 got 1,000 in 3 that they must be counting XBLA games as well. or that could just be fanboy logic trying to take over (i told you no more!). either way, congratulations to the 360, that is a huge feat either way you look at it.
i wonder how many the Wii has though. on a weekly basis there are a ridiculous amount of Wii and DS casual crap games that far outnumber everything else. i wouldnt be surprised if they were close to it though even with the 360's head start.
Fernando Rocker @ Mar 15th 2008 4:57PM
Well... so we can count also all the Wii Virtual Console games and the upcoming titles from WiiWare.
HighFiveJesus @ Mar 15th 2008 4:49PM
Checking any lists that i could like wikipedia and metacritic, i only came up with at least 400 some games, many not even released yet. So i'm missing something, because i don't see how they will double their library in just a few months when most of those games coming out are already on the list i checked?
jorojoserojas @ Mar 15th 2008 4:55PM
I think they're including XBLA games as well. I know for sure that there won't be 1000 games in a DVD library, that's for sure.
RabbidMickeyMouse @ Mar 15th 2008 4:54PM
This is including Live games, so its not 1000 boxed games.
Kspraydad @ Mar 15th 2008 4:59PM
Current Xbox 360 games and XBLA is less than 500 according to Wiki and ESRB.
This 1000+ includes Xbox 1 games.
By the same measure both PS3 and Wii have +1000 games right out of the box.
Chris @ Mar 15th 2008 5:04PM
my fanboy sense is tingling !
Mr Khan @ Mar 15th 2008 5:20PM
I was thinking "Well if they're counting XBLA in, are they counting Originals in, too"
My brain responded, "No, good PR firms know how much spin is too much"
Apparently i was wrong.
SoulBlade @ Mar 15th 2008 5:58PM
Wow... with that bit of info, it sounds like MS is just getting desperate for some good PR and trying to rebound from NPD numbers. God I hate marketing.
nick @ Mar 16th 2008 6:58PM
ESRB is regional... North America. I think the overall count is including games in other regions that don't necessarily make it over here.
Moofree @ Mar 15th 2008 5:01PM
Well my PSP has at least 1000 games on it already.
Rom collections can be a curse.
Morgon @ Mar 15th 2008 5:07PM
Actually, I was under the impression that the 1,000 mark included the XNA games, not Xbox 1 titles. They announced this figure right after their big public XNA preview last month.
Mal F4cti0n @ Mar 15th 2008 5:15PM
I would imagine this does include the XBLA and XNA catalog of games. Though that is still an impressive number, I would think that by the time that thousand number comes to pass, half of the titles will be less than 150MB in size (meaning they are of the XBLA and XNA library).
Some of those XBLA titles are great games (Puzzle Quest, Worms, Dishwasher Samuri, etc.)
Judd @ Mar 15th 2008 5:15PM
So who's the first person to get a 1,000,000 point gamerscore?
Geist @ Mar 15th 2008 5:17PM
Oh he shall be revered and placed upon a pedestal reserved for those descended from the heavens.
Or, you know, laughed at because he has no life.
Pro-Truth League @ Mar 15th 2008 5:16PM
Considering there's not even 400 XBOX 360 games out right NOW, this figure has to include:
XBOX 360 games
XBLA Games
XBOX Originals
XNA games
and probably all BC XBOX 1 games.
By this same token, the PS3 has, like, what.. 3,000 games?
and the Wii.. close to 1,000?
nutman @ Mar 15th 2008 5:43PM
Haha. Actually there are over 450 Xbox 360 games currently.
