Smash Bros. Brawl sells record-breaking 1.4 million first week in US

Nintendo's brawler Super Smash Bros. Brawl has smashed records with its US release. According to a press release from Nintendo of America, the game has sold over 1.4 million in the region, with 874,000 of those sales on its March 9 release date. That makes it the "fastest-selling video game in Nintendo of America's history."

Always one to play the numbers game, Nintendo claims to have sold "at a rate of more than 120 units per minute between launch and March 16." Assuming they mean the entirety of March 16 (i.e. the first eight days), that amounts to 8 days * 24 hours/day * 60 minutes/day * 120 units/minute = 1,382,400 units. Too bad they didn't make 130 units per minute. Oh well, better luck next time.

I kiiiid...

People keep complaining about lag but I haven't really experienced much of it. Out of my MANY both friended and "anyone" matches, I have only experienced real lag about 1 or 2 times. The little colored dots on your friends tell you how good your connection was last time you played together, so just stay away from red dotted people if you want a smoother connection.

I've only played online once and the lag was god awful. Like every half second it would stop. The match took forever.

I don't claim to represent the majority of Brawlers, though.

Oh, that's what those dots were for, i thought they were for what rank they got compared to you when you last played them

I think it depends on the time. The servers were pretty overloaded during game night. I also didn't play online the first day, and I can't imagine how incredibly explodey it would've been.

I usually don't have a problem either. I just experienced my worst match so far though. Lag was horrendous.

I think it maybe can tops Halo 3 in online activity. No kidding.

Hope Nintendo release numbers... how many players are online.

It would be really hard to top Halo or CoD 4 for that matter in terms of online play. The Wii's Friend Codes make it hard for people to persist online. For example,in Halo you can play for hours, constantly changing opponents. On the Wii, to change opponents you must have or have had their Friend Code(s) and set up each match/tourney/whatnot, making it difficult for large numbers of people to be online at once, actively playing each other. If there were matchmaking in Brawl, hands down it would beat Halo and CoD4 because of the Wii's huge install base. But, since the Wii is so casual, so child protective, I doubt it would ever happen.

Lack of any kind of fun single player and a multiplayer that's only fun with friends kills this game. Same old to me at least. Just because it's a formula that sells doesn't make it great. But I would say the same thing about Halo 3 and that sold alot too, but at least it's multiplayer had a way better setup for getting games set up.

But then, thats the excuse for most games these days.

Mario Galaxy had 800,000 pre-orders in JP, and it only sold 250,000 first day.

Good job Nintendo. Why does everyone have to hate? SSBB is Nintendo's best game geared towards competetive gaming, of course this game has a rabid fanbase. It's the closest thing they have to an xbox live, social gaming answer to the Wii that appeals to a broad range of gamers from casual to the hardcore.

Not surprising at all... I got it on release date at Best Buy in Pentagon City, VA and during my 20 min metro ride to the store I saw at least 10 people with copies of it.
Yet, I find no one to play it with me online (sucks eh?).

I'm so pissed. I just unlocked Sonic and was having a great time with my friends...and then got the Wii verion of the RRoD. So yeah, I'm shipping my Wii back for repairs, and I'm gonna die waiting to get it back.

Nice - props to the Big N. I didn't expect it to compete w/ Halo. It's a completely different beast. It wouldn't really even make sense to compare the two in terms of intial gross sales given that Halo had multiple versions (each equivalent or more expensive than Smash) and released within a week worldwide.

That said, Halo sold more units - but does it really matter? I'll give props to Nintendo on having a title that went platinum within a week and made them plenty of profit - they hardly spent on advertising (at least compared to others). I'm also quite pleased that so many Wii owners would buy this kind of game - especially given the demographic. It was pretty much expected that Halo would sell a ridiculous amount since that's the target audience of the 360.

It's a good step for Nintendo - I hope they shell out more quality games. I wouldn't be surprised if Wii Fit sold more than this within a week, but I'll still be somewhat saddened by the news.
