They need to make a game (any genre, maybe even fighting) with THIS health system:

-You regenerate health from light attacks such as punches
-You die from things like bullets to your head
-You bleed and take damage over time from attacks like minor cuts

This has been tried a few times on some PC titles in the past. I can't think of any tiles off the top of my head, because everyone hated them, and they quickly vanished into obscurity. The only time methods like that work ar in stealth/survival games, were it's a good idea not to fight the enemies at all if you can avoid it.

Wing: "You regenerate health from light attacks such as punches"

I am thinking Temple of Doom, right now.

RTCWET (and I'd assume RTCW) did health packing well. There were classes in the game and there were health bars.

Medics could heal you and throw out med packs, and I liked how it worked.

I also loved the field ops and stuff for ammo but thats another story.

edit: also, I'm totally cool with the whole "run behind a wall" thing too.

Joystiq could use an edit button...

Man, he is 10,000,000% right. FPS games are becoming seriously generic because they all have generic qualities to them. Everything has a space marine, everything has at least some sort of super suit to it. Come up with something original. And try to inject some humor into the thing.

Yahtzee should email this to every recent FPS developer (especially the makers of Turok).

Generally I thoroughly enjoy his reviews. While much of what he said I agree with, this episode sounded less of a review and more of the rantings of a PC-fanboy. It was somewhat detrimental to what he was trying to get across.

Health packs are pretty unrealistic too. Regen is fine for a game. It paces it. Health bars can be good, like TF2 or annoying.

Don't know if am late to the game posting this, since everyone seems to get their entire life story down within 2min of the post...which is actually quite impressive. But i thought the best health system was in MGS3: Snake Eater. I thought it was awesome, and quite frankly b.a., that if someone shot you, or if you broke a bone, or if you got poisoned, you had to fix it yourself; through, in my opinion, a fun mini-game type system. Plus the idea of a stamina system makes more sense than say a health bar. Your player can get exhausted from battle and dealing with all the running around, but if you get hit in the head with anything larger than a small tricycle or if an object hit you carrying the right amount of velocity (f=m*a), then you should be dead. period. .

ps. not to cause any ruckus....but Halo is overrated, not as much as gears of war, so you got that going for you. Yes gears looks pretty, but the gameplay blows. Also, while Halo has great fps controls for a console, i don't see how so many middle schoolers get pre pubescent boners when talking about a man in a green suit, and who's back story, origin, make, and model rivals that of bill brasky. I mean the most action i saw in halo 3 was when a girl did a little 180 spin with a gun...ooooh riveting. The choreography for fight sequences is appalling. Plus, the only thing he came close to having a relationship with a woman was an AI program.

I agree with Yahtzee personally. I liked Turok and thought it was a marginally good time. I also agree with his complaints with most First Person Shooters in the last three or four years or so. Everything has to involve a space marine or something like that, but what really gets me is how everyone is decrying them for "ripping off Aliens". I dare say, you're all full of shite.

The first mention of a marine in space was in Robert A. Heinlein's "Starship Troopers", a novel written in 1954... or was it 1955? Either way, everything involving human marines in space fighting a ruthless alien race started there. So please, give credit where credit is due.

Thank you.

I like the new regeneration system because in a way it suspends my disbelief much better than health packs.

If you think about it, every healthpack you find is out of the place and hurts the immersion and to me, immersion is THE thing about the game. Beeing shot would take couple months to recover from and no amount of painkillers would make you go right back into the fight. This way, I just pretend (you know, in my head) that I wasn't actualy shot, I was just in a situation where I can get shot (like in the movies, the main character only get's shot once or twice) and if I run to cover I'm in a better tactical position....

MaxPayne was the only game where healthbar and medkits worked fine for me, everywhere else, not realy.

I'm still trying to figure out how games like Halo are considered overrated and terrible when every game in the freaking industry copies it...Including COD 4 (i.e. Matchmatching)...I love FPS they're actually my favorite thing to play...I love COD 4, Halo, Resistance Metroid Prime etc...But damn is it cool to hate Halo? I never understood that....Take Half-Life 2 for instance...Its arguably the best game ever....But it gets a pass for its horrible multiplayer...A multiplayer so bad in fact that Valve had to make a whole new game to replace it! (i.e. Counter Strike) But nobody calls it overrated or even tries to talk bad upon it...I'm not trying to downplay HL2 cuz its quite possibly the best FPS ever but for some reason people nit pick with Halo and not with HL2....It kind of pisses me off that its cool to hate the damn game just becuz its popular.

Valve didn't make counterstrike. It was a user modification on Half Life.

Half-Life 2 was actually a fantastic single-player that lived up to the massive amounts of hype that had generated over the years since the original Half-Life. Secondly, HL's multiplayer came out after the singleplayer game and CS was originally created as a user-created mod.

Halo CE, while a good game, was nowhere as good as the fans or the critics made it out to be. Vehicles weren't new to the FPS genre (see Tribes), nor was the story or presentation very impressive. Halo also made it so that half the combat dissolves into a boxing match instead of actual shooting. Not to mention that absolutely TERRIBLE and repetitive level design that plagued the first Halo. The multiplayer, while it was good, never really did anything new or interesting to separate it from being more than just a slowed down UT clone.

Overall, Halo was a good game, but it often received an overabundance of praise, sometimes for achievements that shouldn't actually be credited to it (vehicles or dual wielding).

The FPS genre is dead to me. I went overkill with those games on the original Xbox. And then, I had a sort of epiphany: I'm shooting over and over and over again, without no plot or reasoning. Just shooting.

It felt common and embarrassing. So yeah, no FPS for me.

But Yhatzee gets props for the Exhumed reference. I had that on the Saturn. It sucked then and it sucks now, but he gets props anyway.

The weird thing is, the main reason Halo became such a standard was that it was the first console FPS do do the controls right.

As a singe player game its horrendously generic and derivative. As a multiplayer game its generic, but its the first console FPS where they got the control right, so it was the first one that was fun.

I am starting to get very bored of the recharging health thing though. Its not bad. It works really well in some games. But it also tends to make every game feel the same... and it sometimes really disrupts the rhythm of the game. I don't mind it... but i wish a few devs would try something different, if only for a change.

Plus, some non-aliens FPS settings WOULD be nice. Might I suggest a 40s gangster FPS, a steampunk fps and another attempt at a fantasy FPS. (plus making them a bit more freeform and deus ex like would be nice)
