PS3's Orange box gets 128MB mystery patch
As if five great games in one little box wasn't enough bang for your gaming buck, EA has just released a mysterious 128MB patch for the PS3 release of The Orange Box. That's like a whole PSN game in patches! We say "mysterious" because, well, it seems like nobody has any idea just what's included in that patch.
If you'll recall, EA took care of porting The Orange Box to the PlayStation 3 while Valve concentrated on the PC and Xbox 360 platforms; unfortunately, the PS3 release was not only delayed but it also suffered from some (perhaps exaggerated but nevertheless serious) framerate issues. While everyone is waiting for some sort of official changelog from EA, we figured we'd ask if any of you have noticed an appreciable difference following the update. Well, have you?
[Update: Official changelog from EA posted after the break, for your edification.]

- Fixed a memory leak to improve single player stability.
- Fixed an issue whereby the players name would not appear on the Stats comparison screen.

hplcman @ Mar 20th 2008 1:31PM
I'm in the middle of playing HL2 and I think the load times are a little faster. It could just be my imagination though...
Jody Anthony (Good Eats Fanboy) @ Mar 20th 2008 1:34PM
unless they added 1080i support it doesn't make any difference to me.
Jweav @ Mar 20th 2008 1:43PM
Probably fixed 5.1 surround sound through optical cable not working.
Sam @ Mar 20th 2008 1:52PM
i bet you then sped up load times, like in portal or somethin.

I hope it fixed that wierd GlaDOS AI at the end of portal. The game started getting all glitchy and GlaDOS sprayed poisonous gas at me.

I hope you're kidding XD

Valve and Epic are the best out there. Valve especially is amazing. I wish they'd have included Half Life 1 on this box. Sounds greedy to ask for MORE, but it would have introduced an audience that may not have experienced HL back in the day. I don't want to sound like I'm griping. AGain, Valve is way ahead when it comes to what they do.

PSN Patch Notes - The Orange Box 3/20/08
127,598kb
Team Fortress 2
-Adjusted Spy backstab damage. Backstabs now do 200% more damage.
-Reduced maximum Soldier rocket reserve to 4.
-Scouts rebalanced. Asking for a dispenser here will now alert nearby Engineers in the same manner that calling for a Medic does.
-Trains were deemed overpowered, and have been removed from cp_Well.
Portal
-Fixed a bug preventing some players from hearing Weighted Companion Cube "stab" dialog.
-Removed cvar cl_cake_density
-Spawning an Orange Portal no longer causes division by zero.
Half Life 2: Episode 2
-Due to player complaints, Alyx Vance no longer follows the player, but instead does a sexy little dance.
-Striders have been outfitted with Gravity Guns. After all, fair's fair.
-Launching the Gnome into space now allows players to watch the game's true ending, which reveals the GMan to be none other than a socio-political charicature of postindustrial corporate greed.
-Tweaked antlion AI. Antlions now respond to attacks with collective singing.
Metayoshi @ Mar 20th 2008 3:14PM
Spawning an Orange Portal caused a division by zero error? That's pretty funny.

i was thinking about getting this game after watching http://www.expotv.com/videos/reviews/22/193/TheOrangeBox/241660
but if theres 128MB worth of issues in it...no thanks!
Joe P @ Mar 20th 2008 3:19PM
Except there's no longer 128mb of issues in it...
Spin44 @ Mar 20th 2008 3:23PM
thats the point. why is there 128mb of issues to begin with?
Danny @ Mar 20th 2008 4:06PM
Because companies don't have to finish software to release it anymore. See: Vista, Forza 2
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 20th 2008 4:49PM
Because the PS3 port was handled by a third party studio who were given a task and a deadline, and little else.
If it bothers you so much, get it on 360 or PC, as there aren't any issues per se.
Yoshi Likes Boys @ Mar 20th 2008 5:47PM
I'm sure you're not excusing EA's absurd behavior here, Crono. Both companies should be embarrassed for letting that pile of shit out the door, and both names should be rightfully tarnished for even needing to put this patch out. Probably more EA than Valve, but that's another story. It's good that they finally got around to fixing the issues, but 4 months too late.

For the details on the patch
J @ Mar 20th 2008 5:50PM
I've encountered an issue on the 360 version. I'm in "Our Benefactors" in HL2 and the screen freezes at the same point every time.
I borrowed a copy from a friend and I still have the same problem.
Any suggestions would be MUCH APPRECIATED as this is my first time playing it.
PLEASE & THANKS!
J @ Mar 20th 2008 5:52PM
(It freezes in such a way that the only way out of it is to completely turn off the console, btw.)
Yoshi Likes Boys @ Mar 20th 2008 5:53PM
According to the threads over in the Orange Box forum on Steam's forum, these are all fixes for Team Fortress II, and do nothing about the pathetic load times and framerate issues on the other games. FAIL.
BananaPoo @ Mar 20th 2008 6:52PM
After that fucking asshole gabe newell was taking out of his ass about soney and PS3...
I will never play buy or rent anything that comes from valve...
Sorry but I just can't ...
Go Fuck yourself Gabe... and have a nice day...
Andrew K @ Mar 20th 2008 8:09PM
LMAO, 128MB! PS3 sucks ass.
Lard @ Mar 20th 2008 8:19PM
Too little, too late.
The fact we had to wait *months* for a patch for issues that shouldn't have been there in the first place, along with Valve's *complete* FU to customers on the issue up until now by not commenting on it, is enough to ensure I will never, ever buy a Valve product again - no matter what it is.
AJAPAM @ Mar 24th 2008 8:42PM
Why does every review constantly complain about framerate issues. I own this, and I rarely get any issues. WTF MICROSOFT IS TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD... again.
hvnlysoldr @ Apr 12th 2008 4:31PM
I was going to post more than an obligatory eye patch but I lost interest.
