Rock Band surpasses 6 million song downloads
Rock Band keeps rocking the downloadable content market as Harmonix announced today the game has sold over 6 million songs in just over three months. The title has set the bar for DLC with fresh weekly content and the last update we had about sales numbers stated that Rock Band had sold 2.5 million pieces of DLC around mid-January. We've placed a master list of all the songs available on Rock Band after the break.
Although we'll probably never get a straight answer, it would be nice to find out how much of an impact the new Rock Band music store is expected to make on sales. Having all that DLC available from directly inside the game, rather than making potential customers wander through the virtual aisles of the Xbox Marketplace or PlayStation Store, should make some noticeable difference.

Is that screen from the 360 version? I've never seen that, I just buy from the Marketplace. I like the look of that interface better.
Kizzle @ Mar 20th 2008 10:01AM
Never mind, I just read the post below this.
deaftly (Brawl - 1075-0467-4222) @ Mar 20th 2008 10:13AM
haha I was about to ask the same thing. Looks pretty badass and its going rock to not have to stop the game if you want to buy a new song. My wallet is already screaming.
baby sea tuna @ Mar 20th 2008 10:10AM
Gah! 4 bits of RB news back-to-back-to-back-to-back? Stop blowing my mind Harmonix!
FrankTheCrank @ Mar 20th 2008 10:10AM
This sucks. Expect the number of songs in the next version of, insert your favorite rhythm game here, to include less or real sucky songs. The good stuff will be saved for DLC.
Music publishers really know how to f*ck you. How many times can you pay for the same song? Now I have to buy them again? So I can play them in my guitar game? What's next, paying to hear them in my favorite game?
No wonder the RIAA is so hated and revered.
baby sea tuna @ Mar 20th 2008 10:14AM
Eh, it still beats DDR where all the songs are complete and utter shit out-of-the-box and DLC is few and far between.
Noshino @ Mar 20th 2008 10:22AM
baby sea tuna
depends on your preferences...for example I like most of the songs from the DDR games compare to Rock Band and Guitar Hero (even including their DLC songs...)
Sir Fidlious Wong (Zeon Defense Force) @ Mar 20th 2008 10:23AM
Frank, I know what you're talking about, man. Like, I hate buying a movie ticket to a new movie, and then when the film is dropping on DVD again, they expect me to actually buy the privelage to see the same movie again. And then, I have to pay for an HBO subscription for when it hit's the movie channels?!? And let's not forget the final rip off of having to watch it WITH COMMERCIALS?!?
Seriously, Frank. A song's value is increased when it's thrown in Rock Band just because of all the stuff you now do with it.
Noshino @ Mar 20th 2008 10:29AM
sheppy,
Nice one, haha, well, I understand what you say, since DLC is a form of revenue, but the technology is there, look at beats, Sony can take advantage of it and make their own music game(aside from beats), but then again, its Sony, so I doubt they'll do so....
copa @ Mar 20th 2008 10:39AM
Harmonix can't sell a bunch of DLC unless they have very good sales of the main disc. And people aren't going to buy the main disc unless there's a bunch of great songs on it.
That is why the main disc is filled with the commercially successful songs like 'Tom Sawyer' and 'Enter Sandman', while better but lesser-known tracks by the same artist are offered through DLC.
But you're contention that the 'good stuff will be saved for DLC' is misinformed, and wouldn't work financially.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 20th 2008 11:01AM
Harmonix really could successfully ninja the RIAA when the next rock band comes out by selling it as a disc upgrade to Rock Band 1. Installs a massive update (like the oblivion expansions) thats add all the new features and tricks or whatever, but still preserves compatibility with all the existing DLC. And it can happen without a new licensing agreement.
Harmonix... be the ninja.
Brian @ Mar 20th 2008 10:13AM
The new interface should be the first post people see. Any due to the excessive number of posts, it would be nice to remove the lame one about the albums. We get it.
Quick note, the game is seriously lacking 80's tunes.
baby sea tuna @ Mar 20th 2008 10:15AM
Is it? I was under the impression that it had quite a few. Or do you mean one-hit-wonders?
ShankShank @ Mar 20th 2008 10:26AM
Wow, tell me more about Rock Band, please!!
murph @ Mar 20th 2008 10:34AM
Hmm, what ever happened to GH2 and "the most DLC ever". LOL! RB FTW!!
dark_inchworm @ Mar 20th 2008 12:32PM
Obviously I don't know the full story, but I'm guessing what killed GH2's "most DLC ever" claims is that Harmonix was snapped up by MTV in September '06. Harmonix churned out Rocks the 80's the next year as a contractual obligation, and what DLC there is for GH2 is very possibly there for similar reasons. (Notice how there's about an equal amount of rehashes and new songs available for download; that may have been specifically demanded, for all we know.)
Potential flaws in my logic:
RedOctane's claim that Guitar Hero II would have the most DLC ever was made after Harmonix was snapped up. Also, I have no idea if RedOctane develops any of the songs, or simply handles publishing and peripherals.
This is dark_inchworm's bullshit analysis for the day. Thank you for reading!
T Cuad @ Mar 20th 2008 10:50AM
All the new DLC is what makes this game a sustainable platform. Keep it up Harmonix! I'm depending on it.
We go bar to bar with this game in South Florida and get paid for all the customers it brings in. Without all the DLC I think people would get tired of the same old songs and we wouldn't be able to keep this going.
Alright, now the blatant plug...check out the videos we just put up of our first bar night and our "performance" at the 2008 ING Miami Marathon:

Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 20th 2008 11:03AM
Breaking the TOS, one bar at a time.
jackassery aside. thats awesome. You going to get the stage kit when it comes out?
T Cuad @ Mar 20th 2008 5:29PM
Yea, we're definitely picking up the stage kit. I remember how much everyone mocked it when it was announced but I was just thinking of how perfect it would be for the bars. If it comes out in June as the placeholder currently says we might be able to debut it at an end of season tournament.
Deck @ Mar 20th 2008 11:03AM
Wow that's huge, and I bet the Rock Band online store will make that number go even higher. That is just amazing. They are going to make loads off of that for a long time to come. No doubt about it.
dantebk @ Mar 20th 2008 11:33AM
This isn't a surprise. I almost never pay for DLC, and certainly didn't get any for Guitar Hero II, but even I'VE purchased four songs for Rock Band and plan on getting more.
Though I was disappointed with whoever did the vocals for Last Train to Clarksville. I can understand maybe the masters weren't available or whatever, but couldn't they just get Mickey Dolenz to do it? Dude is NOT that busy these days.

Is this every bloody coming out for Wii? I want to hold back on getting GHIII just incase RB comes out because it has a far better tracklist for me taste in music.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 20th 2008 4:31PM
yes, it has been announced for wii.
Alfred @ Mar 20th 2008 7:53PM
Anyone else think they should include Post-Punk music? (/Short rant over)
Saneless @ Mar 20th 2008 3:07PM
I'm curious to see the GHIII numbers. Maybe activision will get the hint that if you want to sell DLC you shouldn't lump it into 1 pack.
Packs I've purchased in GH - 0
Songs I would've bought if I could've bought them individually? - 4
You're just flat out denying my money, activision. Get witht he program.
Spin44 @ Mar 20th 2008 3:23PM
has anyone actually played the drums from rock band in-person?
according to this video http://www.expotv.com/videos/reviews/22/193/Rock-Band-Special-Edition/206101 the drums look incredibly cheap and flimsy.
ChooChooCharlie (Brawl: 1504-5357-9285) @ Mar 20th 2008 4:06PM
Yes.
And no, they're surprisingly durable. My roommate hammers the shit out of mine and it's still chugging along just fine. (knock on wood)
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Mar 20th 2008 4:32PM
They look flimsy, but they're not. Take it from an expert RB drummer.
colin17 @ Mar 20th 2008 4:51PM
They should release some more radiohead and rush songs....
Chairman7 @ Mar 20th 2008 7:51PM
Imagine how many downloadable tracks would be sold if they actually brought the game out in Europe, Asia, and Australia/New Zealand.... Hint Hint
Chairman7 @ Mar 20th 2008 7:54PM
Sorry Ludvig I should have also mentioned the Republic
