If you read our hands-on impressions of Street Fighter IV from GDC, you know the game bears more than a passing resemblance to Capcom's classic Street Fighter II (with admittedly updated graphics). Well, the folks at GamesRadar wanted to see just how far that similarity went, and found that many classic combos from the original game work exactly the same way in the new one.
The video evidence (also available below the jump) highlights the cosmetic differences in the two games while at the same time showing how seemingly identical the basic gameplay is. We can't say this is necessarily a bad thing -- Street Fighter II is a classic for a reason -- but that classic is already available as a Virtual Console download, an upcoming HD remix, and even a PS2 Anniversary collection. Why are we supposed to trudge out to the arcade for a dressed up version of a 15-year-old experience that we can get at home?

Correction: Blanka is AWESOME. Seriously, I love playing with him, even though he is not my favorite character.

Why isn't SF4 coming out on Wii? Those graphics just look bad... Still 2d, still same moves- why isn't this a wiiware game?

I poke fun at the Wii for not being able to handle the graphics load, but i believe this game can easily be decent on there. Then if they did went that route, the 360 and ps3 players would be like, "wtf" as to why they made it look crappy when it could've looked better.
This games is getting hyped up a lot, i think many are going to be let down.

I believe SFIV can do this game, at least scaled down. BUt I also believe they won't do it bacause, you know, Wii audience and such. I'm not Flamebaiting, i'm trying to get into Capcom's mind.

The way Ono made it sound in EGM, Capcom didn't plan to ever make an SF4 until he convinced them they could make one that would fully capitalize on SF2's undying popularity. So sure it'd be nice to have a more "new" SF4 but this may have been the only way to get one at all.

My guess is that they are gonna have the original cast with all their moves, but have a boatload of new characters with different moves (a la SFIII) so that classic players can play the same but still have some variety.

Oddly enough, I would go down to the local convenience store to both purchase Combos and play Street Figther II back in '92 or whenever it was. I sucked and was totally pwned before pwned was knwned.

I like how GamesRadar thought it was great that the old combos work and Kyle Orland tries to spin into a bad thing. For the most part certain bread and butter combos carry over to sequels in just about all fighting game franchises.

Ryu could do the same combo in SF3. And Chun-li had her heel stomp too, right? So how is this news? I used mostly the same combos from SF2 for SF3 and they worked.

Because it looks absolutely frickin awesome???
Maybe these guys just know how to do stunning trailers, but i'm so hyped about this game.. and i don't even usually like fighters that much. (apart from soul calibur 2 of course)

Normally I'm all for nostalgia, but I was hoping Capcom was making a NEW two-dimensional game, because it will take several companies risking that route before people to begin to see 2D as an option in top-tier games and not just what you get when there are strict limitations on file sizes. Capcom's adding some new characters, yes, but the more I hear of the game, the more I see that is lifted from SSF2T unchanged, and that stuff doesn't help bring about the 2D renaissance any faster, it only helps to cement the prevailing, inexplicable opinion that without exception, a game is only modern if it has 3D gameplay. I want that to change.

and way to make judgments on a game based on a minute of footage of combos that mostly existed in SF3 as well as SF2 in order to say SF4 is going to play exactly like SF2. Seriously, Joystiq (and some of you commenters), this is the best you could do?

"What they haven’t shown you here — what we haven’t really shown anyone, yet — are the combos that are entirely new to the game. Seth has been quietly mastering a series of combos with Zangief that require skillful use of the Revenge Gauge, Cancel techniques and a fully powered Super Combo meter but results in almost 100% damage."

Because that's the only way to really enjoy SF.
Anyone who, like me, spent a lot of spare change when SF II was new knows that playing SF in an arcade is where is at.
