Halo 3's Heroic Map Pack to be free this Tuesday

While Bungie is probably hoping that everyone will get excited about their quickly approaching Legendary Map Pack, we'd wager that a larger percentage of the Halo 3-playing populous are instead anticipating the price reduction on Bungie's last expansion, the Heroic Map Pack. In their latest weekly update, Bungie announced the discount would come sooner than expected -- as of 2 a.m. this coming Tuesday, the pack will be free to download on Xbox Live Marketplace.
For those living under rocks (or PS3s), that means you've got no reason not to purchase the formerly $10 set including Standoff, Rat's Nest, and the highly customizable Foundry. Unless you hate free things, or, even less likely, you never purchased Bungie's third ringworld romp.
[Thanks, Sam.]

Unfortunately I just purchased these last week (didn't keep up with my Map News!) but I'm awaiting the day when they get better rotation in the standard games and hopefully ranked matches. Also really looking forward to the remake of Sidewinder in the next pack!
ill trooper @ Mar 22nd 2008 6:35PM
Oh, yeah... Halo 3. I remember that.
Poisoned Al @ Mar 23rd 2008 12:22AM
Yes, it was that time before TF2... I don't remember much before TF2.
Mr.ESC @ Mar 22nd 2008 6:38PM
Damn I bought the Heroic pack back in January but I rarely played Halo so I used the maps max 4 or 5 times each.I thought the maps would bring a little life to the game but after forgetting how to play Halo it left me this sour aftertaste.
I wasted 800p and I don’t think I will ever play Halo 3 again…Now can I has maps for Team fortress 2 valve?
mike @ Mar 22nd 2008 6:39PM
Finally. Now they are gonna be placed properly in the playlists.
Legendary map pack? Thats not news, thats just a preview of 3 more free maps coming in 4-5 months. Theres no point to buying maps for halo 3 unless you play custom games.
I consider this tuesday to mark the release of the 1st halo 3 map pack.
Bucfann @ Mar 22nd 2008 8:58PM
Well dont get to hyped up abotu the Heroic Maps. They are veto maps in my book. I bought them, and was pretty disappointed. Foundry sucks. Rats Nest and Stand Off are both okay but nothing to get hyped about. I will freely veto all three maps when they pop up. Sort of like Infection which is lame as well and has to be one of the most vetoed maps Halo 3 has.
We can only hope that the Legendary Map pack will give us some good maps, which Halo 3 is lacking in my opinion. I like a few of them but over all the maps are average to poor.
Drew @ Mar 22nd 2008 10:34PM
I don't know what map Infection is, but it seems like Isolation gets vetoed a lot. It's a shame because, IMO it is one of the most fun maps in Halo 3.
MasterInsan0 @ Mar 23rd 2008 1:24AM
I think the issue behind Halo 3's maps being slightly mediocre is the ridiculous amount of homogenization they went through. Bungie basically put each and every map through an aggressive playtest ringer and it shows--they're designed so that everyone will be able to play without any person or tactic having a specific advantage (unless they wanted it that way). However, that doesn't guarantee that everyone will find them fun.
Obie @ Mar 22nd 2008 6:40PM
Ah! Good ( and free) things to those who wait.
I will mess with these for a week and then jump into the COD4 maps the week after. ;)
Grumpyzrp @ Mar 22nd 2008 6:46PM
damn... i just bought the heroic map pack on Thursday.. :(
Vcize @ Mar 22nd 2008 6:54PM
Oh hey, now I can actually PLAY those maps that I paid $10 for because they'll actually show up in matchmaking.
Biggest waste of $10 ever.
I have no problem paying $10 for maps. But when they don't let you use those maps except in some gimped playlist that has ONLY those maps it just blows. They have a plenty big community, they should've just split it between people that had the DLC and those that didn't so the people that did pay for them could actually, ya know, USE them.
The Stig @ Mar 22nd 2008 7:02PM
There is a DLC matchmaking playlist you know...
vidGuy @ Mar 22nd 2008 7:19PM
Of course, but the problem with the DLC playlist is that it only includes the three maps and only social play. It should include those maps in a proper rotation with the original maps and ranked play.
theron @ Mar 26th 2008 5:09PM
Yeah, no kidding. I'm sick of having to play Snowbound 5 times in a row.
itsamagicalwrld9 @ Mar 22nd 2008 6:58PM
Woot, I sent this tip in and they even said my name! I'm teh famous! And actually Mike, the Legendary Map pack is coming out in less than a month, not 4-5 months.
Rollins @ Mar 22nd 2008 7:01PM
Mike was just saying that the Legendary Map Pack's release will effectively be worthless except as a preview of a map pack that will be free in 4-5 months (and therefore useful because it will show up in matchmaking playlists).
Mike-453 @ Mar 22nd 2008 7:08PM
I always used to play the DLC playlist. *confused face*
Is it not worth it just because it's not ranked?
Liquid Ocelot (call me Liquid) @ Mar 22nd 2008 7:13PM
I waited it out, and i knew it would come. I'll be there for free, i like free :)
Grant @ Mar 22nd 2008 8:11PM
i feel stupid, i bought this back when it came out, but have only played halo 3 + this playlist maybe 3 times. i personally didn't find these maps all that great, but they would be decent as free DLC.
RobLink (McElroy Defence Force) @ Mar 22nd 2008 8:26PM
Same here. I've played Rat's Nest (??The one with all the vehicles in a circuit-like bunker??) several times in local MP (which was fun, admittedly), but only online a couple times. Waste of £7. :-(
Mr.ESC @ Mar 22nd 2008 9:29PM
Ditto.
I played those maps Max 5 times in one day, If I knew it was going to be free I would've waited.
Also that I wanted to give Halo 3 some life but the maps weren't good enough for that.
Back to Brawl and Team fortress 2.
ScottyGEE32 @ Mar 22nd 2008 8:24PM
i feel as if I'm one of the only one' here that bought them, enjoyed them and have played them lots.
The only difference I 'spose is because rather than playing matchmaking, I play splitscreen and system link which is just infinite+1 times more fun.
Mike-453 @ Mar 23rd 2008 7:17AM
ditto :D

lol the url for the "even less likely, you never purchased Bungie's third ringworld romp" link says halo-3-bought-by-52-of-us-xbox-360-owners/
Lewis @ Mar 22nd 2008 10:28PM
Is this that game with the weird main character and no customizable weapons? Oh ya.
JK, I love this game, I'm glad it'll be free this soon.
cubsbearsbulls1 @ Mar 23rd 2008 12:01AM
i felt like i got ripped off but the video on gametrailers.com makes it look cool
Jaap @ Mar 23rd 2008 7:40AM
Too bad I'm in my "currently tired of gaming" phase. I get that every now and then and just every game I own seems boring to me...
I haven't played Halo for months, I'll probably get slaughtered in matches. Or does your rank go down when you stop playing for a while?
snarfoogle @ Mar 23rd 2008 11:59AM
Free DLC? Wow! Bungie and Halo suck!
In unrelated news, is Valve ever going to release new TF2 content?
David @ Mar 23rd 2008 7:34PM
I hate free stuff! I need to buy those maps tomorrow!
rpstaekwondo @ Mar 23rd 2008 8:36PM
I feel so used! I got these a little while ago. i thought they were not going to be free until April 25, and now I wasted money!
Jack @ May 27th 2008 5:37PM
Hmmm.... 2:00 am has passed, and it is the tuesday after this thread had been opened, so why is the price still 800 microsoft points?
