History Lesson: The Original Video Game Easter Egg
We know that most of you are probably familiar with this piece of Atari mythos, but we thought it would be a festive way to celebrate this Easter Sunday. While Robinett's egotistical stunt was definitely ballsy, it doesn't approach some of our favorite secrets throughout gaming history -- like the legendary Secret Cow Level in Diablo II, or the bitchin' audio file hidden on the Symphony of the Night disc. We're curious to know -- what easter egg, hidden in the folds of one of your favorite video games, especially tickled your fancy?
[Thanks, Matthew.]

Wow I have never ever seen the portal Easter egg...or the Bioshock one. What is this madness!
Dark Morford @ Mar 23rd 2008 5:07PM
MADNESS?

THIS.IS.A.LAME.MEME!
Mr.ESC @ Mar 23rd 2008 7:23PM
I actually dislike memes especially 4chan ones but they get me free upvotes.
They are funny in their context,I guess but they are annoying after a while.

Yeah I never find the axe bottle
Dan @ Mar 23rd 2008 4:59PM
I remember playing Perfect Dark on the N64, searching out the random pieces of cheese that the developers hid in each level. It somehow created a kind of comic-relief from the main game and I found it quite funny.
Shmil (Brawl Code 2621-2310-1994) @ Mar 23rd 2008 5:21PM
i loved the skulls in halo 3, i can't play campaign anymore unless i have the grunt birthday skull on
vidGuy @ Mar 23rd 2008 5:11PM
The level of control publishers wielded on game developers in the early days is scary. Could you imagine not giving credit to the coders in today's world?
Shmil (Brawl Code 2621-2310-1994) @ Mar 23rd 2008 5:16PM
imagine the 100 day developer's strike of 2008
RabbidMickeyMouse @ Mar 23rd 2008 5:29PM
I don't think crediting the coders of today's games would be the same. A lot of the early games were one-man jobs, which carries more personal significance to those who created it.
Crediting the lead staffers of today's games is a good enough job of doling out credit where needed.
Although, I don't know if you were being sarcastic (of which I'm horrible at detecting with people in people).
jorojoserojas @ Mar 23rd 2008 5:25PM
I got this giddy feeling when I learned how to make Mega Man fire a Hadoken in Mega Man X.
I think that's the best one I could think of.
Mr.ESC @ Mar 23rd 2008 7:04PM
That was great. In the PSP version Dr Light is wearing a Karate outfit when he gives you the Hadoken.
Loco Roco level editor secret parts were pretty cool but I never got them to work the way I want them to.
Jones Dudeman @ Mar 24th 2008 1:49AM
He wore a karate outfit in the SNES version too.
I loved doing this though. Wasting Sigma with one hit was hilarious. Plus X sounds funny when he throws the Hadoken.
fischju @ Mar 23rd 2008 5:27PM
If I said the Chad Kroger "Hero" video on the Spiderman dvd, would you yell at me?

yes

A brave colored dot, lmao.

I was the one who suggested this trip down memory lane. Sure it's not on par with today's eggs but it's the first known egg, and that makes it special in my heart. My favorite though is the Chris Houlihan (spelling?) room in Zelda:LTTP
Tom Conrad @ Mar 23rd 2008 5:36PM
In most versions of "You Don't Know Jack" if you type "F*&k You" as the answer to a "Gibberish Question" the host will respond with a long rant along the lines of "Are you talking to me? On my show? F*&k Me? No F*&k you!" The game continues at that point, but if you keep entering the same response the host's responses escalate until he finally says "You don't seem to understand who's in control here -- goodbye." and the game is abruptly shut down. Good times.

that is AWESOME!

ah yeah, the YDKJ eggs. I actually worked on the first two doing assistant art production (i am in the credits and all), and I remember this egg well. it's not just the f-bomb, other swears work too. and there are some other eggs too, though i haven't played in so long i don't remember them...
Phillip @ Mar 23rd 2008 5:48PM
What's that Mario Galaxy one?
Phil
vidGuy @ Mar 23rd 2008 5:54PM
There's some planets that have the right size and gravity that you can get Mario in a continuous orbit if you long jump out.
Rawnblade @ Mar 23rd 2008 6:25PM
I won't lie, that sounds more like an oversight than an egg, haha
Shmil (Brawl Code 2621-2310-1994) @ Mar 23rd 2008 6:31PM
also its a miniature version of the first planet you arrive on
JakubK666 @ Mar 23rd 2008 7:23PM
What about "U R MR GAY" in Mario Galaxy?
aristokrat @ Mar 24th 2008 5:28AM
It's a feature, not an oversight.
bm @ Mar 24th 2008 2:55PM
"I won't lie, that sounds more like an oversight than an egg, haha"
Wow, what? Do you even have a basic understanding of physics?
lol @ whoever voted that comment up.
arrakisman @ Mar 23rd 2008 6:06PM
In the first Hero Quest(Quest for Gloy) there tons. If you type pick nose, the game would tell you that you didn't have the proper tool. If you were a thief with a lock pick and type "pick nose", the character would ram the lock pick up his nose into his brain and die..Game Over.
Geist @ Mar 23rd 2008 10:25PM
Only if your lockpicking skill wasn't high enough. If it was, then picking your nose was actually the best way to raise your Pick Locks skill.
Wubbytoes @ Mar 23rd 2008 6:19PM
I liked the Stormtrooper break room in Dark Forces. I think there was an ashtray and a few random things in it.
Mr Khan @ Mar 23rd 2008 6:46PM
My favorite is the most prolific easter egg of all: The Totaka Song, found in a number of Nintendo-developed games like Wario for Virtual Boy, Mario Paint, Yoshi's Story, Luigi's Mansion, and Pikmin 2, to name a few
fr0z3 @ Mar 23rd 2008 9:25PM
Yup mine too.
Greg Simmons @ Mar 23rd 2008 7:19PM
Perhaps my favorite one is in GTA Vice City.... it was a large egg that said "Happy easter!" on it.
Mr.ESC @ Mar 23rd 2008 7:20PM
The RVsB eater egg in Halo 3 never gets old.
Diablo:Hellfire Notepad file was a good one. You don’t only get the bard as a playable character the main boss of hellfire voice will totally change. Instead of treating you he will offer you tickets for a heavy metal concert.

Hellfire was a good expansion.

Chris Houlihan anyone?
Geist @ Mar 23rd 2008 10:26PM
Damn when I saw that room in LoZ, I had no idea wtf was going on. I was like "Who the hell is Chris? And why won't this room appear anymore? Arrrgh!"
Liquid Ocelot (call me Liquid) @ Mar 23rd 2008 7:39PM
This is an easy one. While playing Hitman: Blood Money (amazing, btw) there's a key on one of the tables. If you pick it up, no description is really given and it seems pretty useless. I happened upon a door, and i found what the key was for: inside a storage room were little rats playing poker. One of the finniest easter eggs ever.
BONUS: I shot them. They died. They bled on the pizza box next to them. I laughed.

No no, sir, the true gold is when the half-naked crowd of men rush up to applaud Agent 47.

Not sure if its an easter egg, but Mr. Resetti in Animal Crossing for the gamecube gives you a different rant if you enter cusswords where he makes you type "I'm sorry".
J @ Mar 23rd 2008 11:25PM
I'm surprised that I am the first to mention my favorite: the ant campaign in red alert counterstrike
Batzarro @ Mar 23rd 2008 11:30PM
Is dropping down a vase and coming out a couple of levels later in Mario 2 an Easter Egg?
arrakisman @ Mar 24th 2008 12:08AM
The Wolfenstien levels in Doom.
