Wonder Boy, Fantasy Zone coming to North American VC
The wait will soon be over for us norms to find out what all the eight-tenths kids who owned Sega Master Systems were up to in the late 80s. Sega announced today that two games for the system are on their way to the Virtual Console: Wonder Boy and Fantasy Zone. They'll be arriving "soon" for 400 points a piece. After those drop, we'll still be on the lookout for other SMS favorite like Alex Kidd and ... hmm. Wait, we'll think of something. Well, there's ... no, no, that was terrible. OK, we give. Are there any you guys and gals want?

Dude... you betta recognize... the original Phantasy Star! that's the bomb!!!!!
RobLink (McElroy Defence Force) @ Mar 25th 2008 4:11PM
Would you believe it, I STILL have that game under my bed with all my other old consoles & games. My girlfriend nags, but I refuse to get rid of them.
I never completed this though. I got to the third planet (the ice one?), but could never get any further without something from Medusa on the first planet, and she always killed me. Ah, good times.....
pkpk523 @ Mar 25th 2008 4:06PM
I'm hoping for Zillion and Gollvlleius (sp?). anyone else remember those? Black Belt was good too
RobLink (McElroy Defence Force) @ Mar 25th 2008 4:14PM
Golvellius was thats ide scrolling RPG with the dude with green hair? That rocked! I'm having a real retro moment here, you'll have to forgive all the comments/replies!
RobLink (McElroy Defence Force) @ Mar 25th 2008 4:09PM
I hope they come to the UK as well, I LOVED Fantasy Star. That poor ship.....
RobLink (McElroy Defence Force) @ Mar 25th 2008 4:16PM
*Fantasy Zone. Was too busy reading the comment above
Mabui @ Mar 25th 2008 4:13PM
Master System had a few good games, Choplifter was fun, Wonderboy was always good.. though I'm drawing somewhat a blank on a lot of them, but I do the same thing for Nintendo Entertainment System, been a few years, yanno?
CNash @ Mar 25th 2008 4:15PM
Hmm, let's see. The Sonic games (the first two are OK but Sonic Chaos is the best of them), Psycho Fox, the Great series of sports games, Robocop vs. Terminator, the Wonderboy series, Asterix, Line of Fire, Marble Madness....

Wow, only 400 Points? That's funny, since they're 500 Points in Japan (600 for Fist of the North Star), and Genesis games are more expensive outside of Japan (600 in Japan, 800 elsewhere).
ChuckD @ Mar 25th 2008 4:17PM
I thought the Virtual Console had been abandoned.
RobLink (McElroy Defence Force) @ Mar 25th 2008 4:25PM
Not abandoned, they just seem to be releasing a load of trash on it all the time. It used to be that I'd check it each week and there'd be one game that might be a buy, but now there's nothing. If they can get other developers to commit, we could see stuff like Duck Tales, Megaman etc, and it could be good again.
RC Jester @ Mar 25th 2008 4:32PM
Zillion is a really fun, really amazing adventure game for the SMS. I remember loving the soundtrack more than anything. If that game comes out, I highly recommend checking it out. I vaguely recall Alex Kidd and the other two listed above.
Jody Anthony (cookingrebels.com) @ Mar 25th 2008 4:34PM
too bad they probably won't do gangster town.
Nerdtacular @ Mar 25th 2008 4:41PM
Wonder Boy FTW! Better than Hudson's Adventure Island.
Chase @ Mar 25th 2008 4:48PM
You bitch.
*storms off in heels*
Mark @ Mar 25th 2008 4:53PM
Though it's already been said: Phantasy Star.
Sabastian Chadwick McGirt @ Mar 25th 2008 5:04PM
You know, i'm pretty disappointed that out of everyone here trying to think of good Master System games, no one has brought up Phantasy Star or Shinobi yet.
Roto13 @ Mar 25th 2008 5:05PM
400 points sounds good. :P
Poo Jangles @ Mar 25th 2008 5:07PM
If it weren't for the GBA port, I'd TOTALLY buy a VC version of Phantasy Star. Other than that, Space Harrier? Oh, the original Shinobi!
E.J. @ Mar 25th 2008 5:17PM
That's levitation, Holmes.
7bit @ Mar 25th 2008 5:42PM
Transbot!!! and no it wasn't a cross dressing robot...
It was a transformers rip off sort of..
What about that haunted house game.. It had no ending, you just got different colored backgrounds and the movements of the bad guys sped up to make it more difficult
BallzDeep @ Mar 25th 2008 5:53PM
Transbot! zOMG! Good call!
And yes, BLACK BELT PLZ! kthxbai.
RobLink (McElroy Defence Force) @ Mar 25th 2008 7:01PM
I think the haunted house game was Ghost House, and was rock hard. Looking on Wikipedia, You Tube etc, people are saying it's one of the hardest games of that generation. I certainly remember not being able to get past the second level.
Also..... Teddy Boy!
Zak Canard @ Mar 25th 2008 5:47PM
I'll be happy if these three make it on there:
Shinobi,
Out Run Europa, and...
...wait for it...
Snail Maze!
AoE @ Mar 25th 2008 6:29PM
holy shit snail maze!!!! That's oldschool man. I recently purchased a MasterSystem (original one from my youth has long since died) To my disappointment though, the one I picked up was a later model with HangOn instead of Snail Maze... I was crushed. :(
32_Footsteps @ Mar 25th 2008 5:54PM
Given how much THQ screwed up the GBA Phantasy Star port, that needs to come out on VC. The game is great - but the constant crashing in the GBA version keeps many from knowing of it.
Rastan was entertaining, even if it had a lousy cover even by Master System standards.
Beyond that, though... I already have a Genny with a Power Base Converter. I want a Master System game, I generally just play it natively.
GamerGuyX @ Mar 25th 2008 6:00PM
Give me Phantasy Star IV!
Human Cannonball @ Mar 25th 2008 6:52PM
If anyone is really that interested in some of the more arcade style Master System games, you should check out this Plug and Play unit:
http://playpalworld.com/plug_play.html
It's usually listed for about $20 online, but I got mine in a Real Canadian Superstore in Canada for I believe $6.98
Some of them list different games, but mine came with:
Sonic Blast
Sonic Chaos
Sonic Drift 2
Sonic Spinball
Sonic Triple Trouble
Alex Kidd in High Tech World
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Alex Kidd The Lost Stars
Altered Beast
Astro Warrior
Bomber Raid
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Ecco the Tides of Time
Fantasy Zone
Golden Axe
Penguin Land
Psycho Fox
Quartet
Ristar
Super Columns
Note that some of the games like Ristar are actually Game Gear versions of the game.
The unit is not that great to play with, but its definitely better priced than these virtual console games, and it's funky-looking enough to appeal to even modest Sega fanboys like myself.
Avoli @ Mar 25th 2008 7:23PM
Moonwalker ftw.
I still have my copy!
Sadly, that's not a lie.
dan diemer @ Mar 25th 2008 7:45PM
Penguin Land. Straight up.
anthony @ Mar 25th 2008 8:05PM
My friend in elementary school had an SMS, and I had an NES. Ahhh, the debates over which was better. :)
In any case, I can only remember playing Shinobi over at his house and playing it again would be rad.
XDragon @ Mar 25th 2008 9:21PM
Phantasy Star 1 is the only game I intend on getting on the sms.
I think people have childhood memories of the sms that won't live up to expectations.
Number Six @ Mar 25th 2008 11:33PM
I used to spend hours upon hours playing The Ninja, Pro Wrestling, Fantasy Zone, and the Hang On/Safari Hunt combo cart. Also, one I discovered years later through emulators, Zelda-rip-off-supreme: Golden Axe Warrior.
KarrRenick @ Mar 26th 2008 12:05PM
Penguin Land! That was a great game!
Glenn Johnson @ Apr 11th 2008 1:28PM
i think penguin land is cool i never been played that one but i seen it once and it was really nice.. i was ended my gaming when i got in college! and i shift into online games such as WoW it was so fun, but sometimes i played ddevil may cry.
