Check out some brief Resident Evil 5 footage
Resident Evil 5 has been off our radars for a while, but some brief gameplay footage has floated our way, courtesy of a Capcom 25th Anniversary DVD packaged with the latest issue of Famitsu. The gameplay is shown amidst shots of character models, and an interview with producer Jun Takeuchi.
What can we glean from this footage? The protagonist Chris Redfield is still seen in the same setting as the last (somewhat controversial) trailer, walking amongst irritable villagers who are still hard to distinguish from the series' trademark zombies. Redfield also has ridiculously huge muscles, making us wonder if we'll get to do a bit more wrassling this time around (probably not, though).
Check out the brief, off-screen footage after the break.
[Thanks, Mark]
Update: Turns out that Capcom had officially confirmed that the buff protagonist is in fact Chris Redfield, and not merely a Chris Redfield impersonator. Appropriate change made above. Thanks to everyone for the heads up.

I like that there was an I Am Legend ad before the clip started; it was kind of like the opposite of the game.
Roofie @ Mar 26th 2008 7:09AM
Oh, and I got the ad because I went to Game Videos to view it.
Brian @ Mar 26th 2008 12:27PM
oh dear....
Lightguy @ Mar 26th 2008 7:16AM
What do you mean "as-yet-unnamed protagonist"? It's Chris Redfield, they confirmed that ages ago.
voodoo_craig @ Mar 26th 2008 7:20AM
That's what I thought, I was starting to get proper confused!
zelderman @ Mar 26th 2008 8:10AM
Me too. They said you would play as Chris Redfeild
dee_lucky @ Mar 26th 2008 7:20AM
Gamestop has this released on May 5th can anybody confirm this??
Fosssil @ Mar 26th 2008 7:33AM
I doubt it. If it does come this year, then expect it closer to Christmas.
baby sea tuna @ Mar 26th 2008 9:58AM
Yeah, maybe May 5...2009.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Mar 26th 2008 10:33AM
egm rumor section said holiday 08. I wouldnt hold my breath though. If it does release this year brutal legend will have a close rival for GOTY. Though the brutalness will see it through. ;)

It looks like Resident Evil 4 Advanced. Which is a good thing, I suppose.
It would have been better on the Wii, though. RE4's controls are a testament to that.
Mike D @ Mar 26th 2008 7:52AM
Please come out for Wii! The controls on RE:4 are so good!
License to ill @ Mar 26th 2008 8:14AM
Its not gonna happen, but keep hope alive...
Neptune @ Mar 26th 2008 8:53AM
"It would have been better on the Wii, though. RE4's controls are a testament to that."
I disagree a bit there. While controls would probably be more enjoyable, there would be a serious graphical downgrade so it would be a gain-lose situation.
I do think a Wii version would be quite enjoyable though.
sirlaitier @ Mar 26th 2008 10:32AM
I agree, the animations of the enemies are all too familiar. Still excited as hell, though.
scotty @ Mar 26th 2008 7:39AM
I love how they put a PS3 controller in plain view too. Just so they don't upset the fanbase. Since that might look bad if they were only playing on 360!
Rususeruru @ Mar 26th 2008 8:24AM
I have a feeling that wasn't really intentional...
More likely they were/are/is/was/have been/will be/fishbowl/soup testing the control schemes while running the build on a PC.
todd @ Mar 26th 2008 7:45AM
wow wow... waiting.
arrrgh @ Mar 26th 2008 11:02AM
sorry premiere but you're just coming off as one of those elitist gfx kids.
If you think Galaxy or smash bros is fugly, i dont think anything can help you regain the objectivity you hopefully once had.
The Wii isn't being pushed hard in the least. blame the devs. Even nintendo can do much better than it has been. Theyre rolling in the dough so no one cares
arrrgh @ Mar 26th 2008 11:02AM
pwnt by joystiq comments :(
pman1225 @ Mar 26th 2008 8:19AM
Yeah, that's Chris Redfield. Also, am I the only Wii fan who thinks that RE5 shouldn't come to Wii? Considering the amount of content I've seen that could probably only happen on 360 or PS3, I'd be willing to guess that porting the game to Wii would probably not be done in high quality fasion, despite the good job Capcom has done in Wii games thus far. If they haven't announced a Wii port yet, I'm not getting it.
ThePremierAssassin @ Mar 26th 2008 8:41AM
And now you're NOT the only Wii fan who thinks that...
As a Wii owner I hate the graphics on the Wii. I know graphics are the be all, end all but you can't deny that graphics add to the splendor of a game. And I'll be honest I find myself much more happier when playing a beautiful game as opposed to playing a fugly game.
RE5 would look fugly on the Wii. And it wouldn't be as enjoyable in my opinion.
Its Nintendo's fault. Perhaps next time around they'll manage to build a system thats relatievly affordable, appeals to everyone, AND produces good quality graphics.
In the meantime Wii owners (that only own Wiis) will just have to settle for sh*t like SC: Legends and RE: Chronicles or w/e...
Meanwhile I'll be enjoying SCIV, RE5, and SFIV.
Nigeria: Cody ChesnuTT Defense Force @ Mar 26th 2008 10:12AM
The graphics the Wii is capable of are perfectly fine. I don't see a huge leap between the previous generation and this in terms of graphics. The gap has been really exaggerated.
There is little beauty in most current generation games as they all aspire to a bland realism. Browns, greys, and blacks. It's really uninspiring.
lucky644 @ Mar 26th 2008 10:15AM
I actually thought RE 4 looked good on GC....

"The graphics the Wii is capable of are perfectly fine. I don't see a huge leap between the previous generation and this in terms of graphics. The gap has been really exaggerated".
Yeah right buddy I see a major leap over last gens graphics, Try playing on a 50 HD TV and say there's not a major difference...

You to can become this dilusional. For only $19.95 plus shipping and handling...you can get your very own copy of Fernandos guide to convincing yourself that up is down and black is white.
Dude, that is priceless...Fernandos would be proud.
ThePremierAssassin @ Mar 26th 2008 8:28AM
Wow he's so jacked...
xFenixKnightx @ Mar 26th 2008 8:43AM
Haha, I saw that. Chris is on the Roids! lol! Hey you gotta fight those zombie or infected looking things somehow right? The game looks sweet and yeah, Capcom even knows the 360 controller is better even for testing a game out. =P
Co @ Mar 26th 2008 9:37AM
Yea it doesn't look like the game's running in 16x9. Even tho the TV set it's on is 16x9, it looks to be a stretched 4:3 image....
tiremfej @ Mar 26th 2008 8:41AM
Haitian Zombies FTW!!!
Toasty Toaster Man @ Mar 26th 2008 10:54AM

hurry and come out already!

I think you've all missed the biggest thing form this video.....................they using Dell XPS's as their dev workstations, that's just nasty.
ssuk @ Mar 26th 2008 9:02AM
The funny thing about this is, the guy speaking in this video will probably creep me out more than the game itself.
Sidepocket @ Mar 26th 2008 10:03AM
I love how people say that RE5 cannot come on Wii.
Its the same engine and code. They literally took the RE4 engine and rewrote the graphics engine to support high rez models, lighting and HD graphics.
Look closely. Note how all the animations, gameplay and controls are exactly like RE4? Its because its the exact same game, just prettier.
If they ported it to Wii all there would be is a downgrade in visuals. Now, considering the downgrade would be RE4 quality and most people still think RE4 is an excellent looking game, I do not think people would consider that a "downgrade" per say.
Not to mention, I keep on wondering if there are any Resident Evil fans who would buy this on the 360 over the PC? Most RE fans I know either have the PS3 for multimedia features or have the Wii for the other RE games plus GC RE backwards compatibility.
So I really do wonder if putting it on X-Box was just to show Microsoft support for Japan and just another attempt for the Japanese to sell games in the western market. Which is ironic because the Biohazard series always had strong sales and support in both no matter what.
voodoo_craig @ Mar 26th 2008 10:16AM
It's not just visuals is it? Do you really think the Wii has the capability to animate that many characters at RE4 quality at once?
If it was that easy they'd have ported Dead Rising by now.
Toasty Toaster Man @ Mar 26th 2008 10:53AM
Considering that RE4 was a port of a Cube game, then it's not crazy to think that the Wii has the capability to animate that many characters at RE4 quality at once.
Co @ Mar 26th 2008 11:11AM
Well said, Sidepocket and Toasty. I've been saying these exact sentiments for months.
And yea, this game will end up on Wii.

It sure is nice to know that we have RE5 developers posting on Joystiq. Thank you.
If that were REALLY the case, do you think this game would be taking this long? C'mon buddy...put down the pipe and come back to planet Earth.
DarkNessBear @ Mar 26th 2008 4:59PM
Wow... you people really have no idea how game creation really works... They don't sit on a couch flipping switches and try to pretend like they are doing something when the "Boss is coming in!".
"Just flip the wii switch and lets put it on the Wii! I can't believe we get paid to do this!"
Girls Play Games 2 @ Mar 26th 2008 10:54AM
I'd say leave RE5 on the PS3 and 360, but make a RE game that takes place in the RE5 universe (side game)for the Wii. The game could have a whole new story and new characters. But, it's still connected to the RE5 game that's on the PS3 and 360. (it would almost force people to buy the game to see what happens, maybe)I think this would be a better idea then just porting RE5 to the Wii. (at least its a new game rather than a port.)
It would give Capcom the opportunity to experiment alittle. They could change the visual style and other things around. (maybe) They could take risk and try something different. Which most companies refuse to do today.(Well expect Nintendo, The Wii was a HUGE risk)
Well that will never happen because the stupid graphic whores young and old(that exist today and walk this earth)would have something bad to say about it.
xFenixKnightx @ Mar 26th 2008 11:35AM
They can make this game for Wii. Not as beautiful but they can definatly make it. Hope they do too, Wii owners deserve more great games not just shovelware all the time.
Co @ Mar 26th 2008 11:56AM
Not just shovelware, but all the spin off side story crap of great franchises too. :(
License to ill @ Mar 26th 2008 12:26PM
Yeah it should be on all three systems, of course I'll be getting the superior one on the 360...
Dr0ooo @ Mar 26th 2008 11:39AM
Chris Redfield for the WIN! (And he's been working out since that incident on that Alaskan island.
Jared @ Mar 26th 2008 12:09PM
The game looks amazing and like it'll be just as good as 4. The only problem I'm seeing with it is, at the moment, they have recycled a bunch of dying animations. Otherwise, looks like its going to be a blast.
Stavros @ Mar 26th 2008 12:18PM
It might be only me, but I think Redfield's character model is so built that it's kind of a turn off to the game. Almost looks like a Gears of War character or something. This coming from a straight guy... /shrug
Otherwise, I'm definitely picking this up.
NATO_Duke @ Mar 26th 2008 12:51PM
See, this is why Barry Bonds should have been the protagonist in this game.
Guero209 @ Mar 26th 2008 4:11PM
Ok, i see all these people writing about him being bulked up and stuff, but what would you rather have? Some skinny ass Chris that looks like he couldn't even lift that shotgun that he's shooting? Or a Chris that looks like he could lift a truck with his penis? I think for the games sake, I'll go with the bulky Chris, he does have to fight off some weird shit after all...
Seroth @ Mar 26th 2008 4:39PM
