We're sure you saw the delightful cross-platform mash-up that put everyone's favorite Spartan smack dab in the middle of PS3 shooter Unreal Tournament 3. While we got a kick of it, we couldn't help but wonder how Uncle Bill and his army of lawyers felt. According to one of those legal eagles, MS thinks that it's the bee's knees.
Here it is straight from the source: "The developers aren't selling the mod, they're not monetizing Microsoft's IP, they're just creating something to share their love of the Master Chief on a new platform. It's a great thing for us and a great thing for the gaming community." Apparently, we've got the Game Content Usage Rules to thank. Now ... do those apply to G.I. Joe?

Better question...are these mods for the PC as well. I'd be stunned if it was a "PS3" only deal.

They are created on PC and then converted in Unreal Editor to PS3.

Lets see what they have to say when someone does a total conversion mod and remakes all the Halo 3 levels. Hey.. We aren't selling it.....

Im sure they will say the website is earning money through advertisements, therefore you can no longer give this or that away on that particular site. Every website has advertisements in some fashion or another.

WTF? Where's my Halogen? That was a mod in the making. So mods for PS3 games: good. Mods for pc games: cease and desist?

How the hell did they manage that?

Actually DWell, it was all made by the person who created the "mod"... If it was ripped directly from Halo 3 it would look like shit.

No, that's the exact same model directly ripped from the game. The shaders or whatever UT uses are probably his own, but that's Halo 3's model, texture, and bump map. It's not difficult to extract the models from the Halo games, I did it for Halo 2 and did renders with them in 3DSMax. Search around, you'll find lots of tutorials.

That's not ripped from Halo 3 AFAIK. Its made by a seriously devoted modeler named Evil Engine, who has made just about every other good model for UT3.
We also have all of the Gears of War characters-- but I think those are rips from the PC version.

The model is ripped from Halo 3 beta. He probably made the rest. But yeah, that's the halo 3 spartan model.
It does look good though :)

I'm really amazed at the quality of content that unreal players /modders come up with. There is a really great Spawn player model that is cooked for both PS3 and PC, and the Gears of War character mods are great too. I've only seen one Halo themed level so far, but it was sidewinder on a much smaller scale. It's still a great map. I even saw a guy playing as Bender from futuama the other day.
Even the lego mod is great, and it works on PS3. I'm new to the development world, but I'm loving the tools that this game includes. (and you can get this game on steam now!)

I would say that alot of what modders do: create new character models, new levels, new textures for levels, etc. overlaps alot with what developers do. There's more to development than writing an engine. And honestly, the people who make all those UT3 levels that shipped with the game are using the exact same tools the modders use to make their own content.
So try not to be so elitist, ne?

I've recently taken courses in game development.
I've recently started getting involved in the Unreal Community.
I'm impressed with user-made mods.
Hope that clarifies it for you.

I keep forgetting to DL this stuff. Ive been wanting to check it out. Too bad UTIII isnt all that fun IMO. Its just run and gun on steroids with no melee and no tactic whatsoever. Sometimes I even laugh at how fast it is, seeing the opponent go side to side trying to dodge my fire...looks goofy.
I know, I know......

UT3 just plays pretty dated compared to the majority of Fps's now a days. I traded it in within a week, its just boring to me.

I would have to advise that you stop playing death match or team death match if strategy is your thing. Warfare mode is great for this and mixes to damn fine UT2004 modes together (onslaught and assault)
What I like about these modes, is that there is always a battle front. Depending on the map, you really cant just grab misc nodes and power them up. you need to connect them link wise to your base. This creates a changing front and makes sure you are always fighting, even on huge maps.
I'm surprised more games haven't stolen this concept from UT2004. It really improved on the Battlefield concept ten fold!!!

UT3 is far from boring and most definitely requires tactics to be good... Sure, you see it as a run and gun shooter, but then again, if all you do is run and gun, chances are you're going to get raped sooner or later by those who actually do. The thing about UT3 and other fast paced shooters (Quake II and III come to mind) is that they require speed... To most that means pointless shooting, but to others who consistently win, that means "thinking on your feet" (irony being you're sitting your ass. Haha- ok not funny) and having fast reflexes (I sound like an idiot talking about video games and reflexes at the same time, right)... Maybe speed and reflexes doing count on the PS3 version (have yet to play it) as it is supposedly slower, but on the PC, saying that it doesn't require tactics is just plain stupid.

@Zeus
Well I have the PC version to fiddle with some mods and while the PS3 version does feel slightly slower it is really not bad enough to make a difference... Its not as slow as Halo 3 or anything like that...Thats a slow shooter...
@Fenix
The mods add to the replay value... Use the action cam and you will forget you ever played Gears Of War... Well maybe you wont but I did... Wouldn't it be funny if you could not use Mods on the 360 version and thus the PS3 version of UT3 had master chief and the 360 version did not....I don't wish for that or anything but it would be like bizarro world or something... I like some of the characters (bender, spawn & cloud) but have yet to see a reason to use Master Chief after all I really didn't like Halo 3 all that much especially considering all the hype... BTW Fenix how is Dark Sector? I am being cheap with a new baby now on the way and will probably only pickup GT:P, MGS 4, GTA IV, Ninja Gaiden 2 & maybe Mario Kart for the rest of the year (hopefully I can limit myself!)... How is that Dark Sector, Fenix?

You wont be dissapointed if you pick this game up. It's very underrated IMO. Just go read other user reviews as well and you will see. Heres what I like about it. (I have the 360 version mind you)
Graphics and Lighting are awesome, great textures and environments, built on Evolution Engine which looks very similar to UE3. Im playing this and hearing this on a 50" Samsung 1080p Plasma and a 1000 Watt 5.1 Samsung SS. Its ridiculous!
Voicework, music, and sound effects are great!Escpecially the Glaive. Kill animations are really nice as well.
The framerate is buttery smooth. Im pretty sure its at 60fps and might dip a little under that but definatly higher framerate than GoW's 30fps.
Special effects look great like when the glaive is on fire or has electricity, its just really cool to see.
Huge boss battles. You actually get to drive one of the bosses once you disable it later on in the game. It sounds awesome and works very well with rumble. It has a real feeling of weight.
The story is good and moves along nicely, Im on the 5th level and so far so good. Your also constantly getting new abilities and can upgrade your weapons which make the game more and more interesting as you go.
All in all I would say this game reminds me more of a Resident Evil game than Gears because of the horror factor in it. The only Gears resemblence is the cover mechanic which it does really well IMO. Not once while I was playing did I say to myself, "Oh this is Gears." Also theres no blind fire but seriously I never use that option in any of my shooting games.
Anybody that was on the fence should really check it out.

Thanks for the info man I might have to rent it for now b/c as I said im a gonna be a dad... So it sounds like the single player is pretty sick.... How is the online multiplayer?... How does the glaive (projectile?) work in multiplayer.... Have you played the Battlefield Bad COmpany Beta yet?... Now that game is amazing.... I thought it was going to be good but it blew my expectations away... I have only played the one multiplayer mode where you either protect or destroy the gold and let me tell you that so far it is the best FPS I have ever played... I have to play the campaign obviously but just from this one multiplayer mode I am blown away... I love COD 4 and all but with all the vehicles and everything this game will give MGS 4 a run for its money in terms of GOTY... The only complaint I can see is its just another military shooter.... But hey ya know thats pretty much where the industry is right now in terms of FPS....Thats why Dark Sector intrest me so mucn (even tho its 3ps) because its something different... As much as I thought I would hate Army Of 2 I am actually still liking it... Admitedly its another military (in this case para military) game with a less tan stellar story... The graphics are sick, controls are ok sans a few things (sniping and melee for example) but the co-op campaign mode online with a friend is where the money is at... Its really growing on me... PS if you have even a passing interest in golf you need to at least rent hot shots golf out of bounds.. Its loads of fun and challeging.. Thanks for the feedback on Dark Sector

It is ironic that the user created mod of master chief for PS3 game looks BETTER than the MC on the machine he is known for.

Actually, the irony is that MC in a PS3 game still wouldn't help software sales. There's just no selling games on some systems, I guess.

It has nothing to do with the machine. Its just that the engine is better DUMBASS, I mean...buddy =)
I would have loved Bungie to license UE3 for H3. It would have been impressive indeed. Speaking of Halos graphics I Dl'd the 3 free maps that came out this week and I ended up playing a campaign level just to see teh graphics. The first level of that game is stunning. Water, Lighting, foliage, draw distance, just B-E-A-utiful. Then on level 2 it looks like Halo 2.5 They should have kept up the level of visual impresiveness throughout the whole game. Bummer, but still a great experience.
