Speaking to IGN about the PSP's three-year anniversary, Senior Marketing Manager for the system, John Koller, reconfirmed Sony's 10-year commitment to the platform. Said Koller: "We've talked about the PSP being a 10 year product, but a 10 year product in the continued lifecycle." Citing the different PSP models, Koller said the handheld "will still be a very strong portable gaming device that is centered in gaming and has a lot of multi-functional features."
Before you go scoffing at that time line, remember that the original PlayStation lasted for over a decade, with the ultra-successful PS2 still going strong after eight years. With the PS3 also given a "ten-year life cycle," we suspect that's just the modus operandi for Sony's hardware strategy.

What is Sony and the 10 year cycle? Seriously...First the PS3 and now the PSP? Is 10 years the new "it" at SCE?

They meant that they will SUPPORT the PSP for 10 years, there will be a successor to it coming out much sooner than that.
Its like Sony still supporting the PS1 when the PS2 launched and same with the PS2 when the PS3 launched.
Unlike Microsoft which immediately killed the Xbox when the 360 came around.
I love my PSP slim, can't wait for the successor and hope there's plenty of homebrew on it as well. I love the official games and homebrew.
Sony hating fanboys are just as annoying as Sony loving fanboys, beleive it or not, its equal for BOTH sides. : )

Gives them plenty of time to iron out all the problems with the system. I love me my PSP, but it does need some fixin'.

These are all home consoles. A 10 year lifecycle for a handheld is laughable. Just look at Nintendo and their success at 3-5 year updates of the Gameboy/DS.

By Sony's logic the DC had a 10-year lifecycle and the NES 19 years. BARF. It doesn't matter if they are no remotely notable games being released.
I can barely finish Metal Gear on my friend's PSP because of the garbage analog nub -- I couldn't imagine gaming for 10 years on it.

People need to STFU about PSP has a "better" library based on reviews -- it's just because so many games are ports/carbon copies of already established console games.
That's fine if people are happy with the games but gimmie a break. Most of the games are not exactly revolutionary.

A game don't have to be revolutionary to be fun.

No its not, otherwise you wouldn't be telling them to STFU...
being revolutionary DOES NOT necessarily make a game good...

i hope they meant they will keep it somewhat backwards compatible, like the GBA and DS.
personally i would like to see built in storage, SD card support, and a DVR dock, like the archos.

I might get a PSP if they keep bringing in the Patapon/Echochrome stuff. I don't like console experiences on my portable console much (question of personal taste).

If Nintendo keeps upping the graphics on the handhelds like they have been doing, the next one should have Gamecube graphics, also Super Mario Sunshine as a launch title!
And the next PSP better be able to download and play PS2 games!

Here's a pipe dream idea for handhelds, consoles or whatever. A console ships with a tray, containing the processor, motherboard and graphics unit (or just graphics, as that seems to be the only element of games becoming more demanding). When times change, a replacement 'upgrade tray' becomes available at a fraction of the price of a new console, for example "PS3.2 upgrade tray".
Games from that point will still be playable on all the previous tray levels, but have improved graphics on the latest tray, similar to the graphics scaling of a PC game.
