A look at the Final Fantasy supporting cast
51
Sure, Final Fantasy might be primarily about Tidus, Cloud, Squall and other spiky-haired, androgynous protagonists who may or may not suffer from (false) memory loss, but let's not forget the colorful supporting cast of characters that flesh out your party. In honor of the upcoming multi-world brawler Final Fantasy Dissidia, PSP Fanboy has a gallery highlighting the best side characters in the series. Check it out here.

But they're not androgynous. Here's a handy guide:

Things weren't always this way. It wasn't until nomura took over that the character design became so girly. Look at FF6 or FF5. The male characters, though attractive, are clearly male. Likewise with the females.
I actually blame Nomura for FF takings such a nose dive since FF7. In FF7 it was new and different. By the time FF10 came along, it was old and annoying.
Needs more zippers!

Speaking of supporting casts and Final Fantasy, I found it to be very amusing how the other party members in FF7 (ie not Cloud and Tifa) seem to entirely lose their involvement with the story besides "just being there" once you get past their character-specific segment of the game.

agreed needs edgar. the guy had a better story than sabin. he was the one witha the double headed coin and took kingship for sabin. also he use a giant drill and a chainsaw. most orginal weapon than the swords of extreme sizes or swords with a gun hilt.

The "first RPG" aspect has a lot to do with it. My favorite FF's are VI,VII,VIII,IX, and X, in that order.
I never played IV, so I can hardly rank it. And I have yet to play XII, largely in part due to my fear of real time.

Tetsuya Nomura is insane. That is the only word that can adequately describe him.
More belts for the belt god! Drown the world in chains, zippers, buckles, and all other sorts of amazingly useless accessories!

Oh God ! That was a typo!
and NO and YES! Both have a great story, but Final Fantasy IX has great storyline in addition to that it was very nostalgic and it was like a tribute for all great time I spent in SNES Final Fantasies. It was also refreshing and renewed my faith in Final Fantasy series after the amount of bullcrap I found in FF VIII (Worst Final Fantasy EVAR)
So may be FF IX was the best not FF VI, but I like FFVI characters a bit more.
Finally, I don't decide which is the best because of console. Sony or Nintendo whatever. I don't let my fanboysim decide on these things.

@ Crono: the thing about FF9 is that it can't be rushed. I tried to do that in my first play through just to finish it off and move on to something else and it completely ruined the game for me.
Years later, after having stepped away from it, I decided to replay it with no deadline and to simply experience the game, much like one would play Animal Crossing (if that makes any sense). End result; i like.

I loved VIII. Maybe something within me resonated with all the teenage angst, I was 16 at the time, but damn I loved that game. Were there plot holes? Sure. Was the character development always even? No. Was it my favorite Final Fantasy besides VI? Yeah. Yeah, it was.

I enjoyed VIII much more when I discovered you could REFINE magic and were not restricted to DRAWING all of it (this was on my 3rd play through, mind you).
I also feel it had one of the better endings.

FF1-3: Too old to be any good
FF4: Decent enough for it's time, not much else.
FF5: No good
FF6: Great effort for the time, second half ruined thanks to non-linearity
FF7: Terrible plot, terrible characters
FF8: Mediocre plot, mediocre characters
FF9: Terrible plot, shallow characters
FF10: Above average characters, great plot
FF11: No
FF12: Mediocre plot, Terrible characters
Common FF problems: Shallow characters.
Thing FF never does right: Love. It either happens for no reason, or the reason is piss poor.
They practically all have a terrible narrative, outside of FFX, also.

I'm sorry, but the characters in FF10 were the worst.
Why can't square make a game with likable characters anymore? I loved all the characters in Chrono Trigger, secret of mana. Hell, even Secret of Evermore.
FF games haven't had likable characters since well before FF7.

I don't know, I think that IV and VI had the best characters and plot, not to mention dialogue. The whole "You spoony bard!" line is as Shakespearean as video games get.

I don't give two craps if characters are likable. It's how they're written, and where they go, how they go, and why they do what they do is important.
In that regard, the entire FF series has poor characters, for the most part.
If you want good characters, you have to look toward The Lunar series, Grandia series, Xeno-series, and such and such.

Second half ruined due to non-linearity? But that's what made it so great! You decide what to do, not the game (and not in an overly SaGa-type way *shivers*). Alas, this explains why you enjoyed X and I, mostly, did not. X was way too linear for my taste.
Also, the series has some good characters. Personal favorites:
FF6 - Edgar (chainsaw FTW)
FF7 - Cid (gotta love angry astronauts)
FF8 - Irvine (initially creepy, but hey, shotguns!)
FF9 -
FFX - Auron.

Except how they're written and where they go doesn't mean 2 shits if I don't give a damn about them to begin with. Its hard to feel sad when Aeris dies if you think she's a bitch trying to butt in on Tifa's action (my wife's view, not mine). Its hard to feel the emotion in Tidus and Yuna's relationship when he has the mentality of a 12 year old and only gets through his problems by being hopelessly ignorant of his surroundings.
Tidus and the Vaan are the best examples. Angsty morons who don't know shit about shit and don't get any better/smarter as the game progresses. Not sympathetic at all.
Crapper characters make for crappy character driven RPGs. Linearity of FF10 sucked too. You could get through that game by holding forward and pressing circle.
Can you tell that I hate ff10.
