Aside from being able to murder innocent people in cold blood, the soundtrack has to be one of the best parts of the Grand Theft Auto experience. Now, you'll be able to take those tracks with you back into the real world without shelling out the bones for boxed soundtrack collections, thanks to a cool new service that will let you mark tracks for download in game.
It works like this: You hear a song you like, you'll call an in-game service called "ZiT" on your mobile phone to mark it. You'll get a text message with the song and artist name, as well as an email if you're a member of the Rockstar Social Club. Said email will contain a direct link to download the song from Amazon's music site for $0.89 to $0.99. What's more, there's no DRM, so you can do whatever you like with them.
While we're usually not a big fan of extra ways to monetize games, this actually seems like a pretty ingenious way to integrate the service. This is pure conjecture, but wouldn't it be interesting if the songs in-game (and available for purchase) continued to be updated? ... That Rock Band money has to be pretty hard to ignore.

What game that you have played has ever included a DRM free mp3 of real-world licensed music on it for you to do what you please with?
None. Not ever.
I don't get what people are griping about here. All that this is is a little feature to make it easier to find a song you like.
Whereas in previous GTA games, or pretty much any other game in existence, you might hear a song you like and say "I'm going to figure out what the name of this song is and then log onto my music service of choice and download it". This just gives you the song info and a link to do so in one click rather than logging onto your computer and searching for it.
It's really not a big deal, just a neat little side feature, and it CERTAINLY is not selling you music you've already paid for nor is it some way to grub away extra coin from you.

well im glad im not the only one that can read the post. people are going crazy for nothing lol. you can even download the songs for free illegally if you want. all its doing is telling what the song you heard in the game is and giving you a link to buy it from Amazon (where Rockstar has apparently added the entire games soundtrack). its really your choice what to do after that. this is a fantastic idea and im sure i use it all the time if the soundtracks of past GTA's are any indication of how good this one will be.

I wasn't saying it was a bad feature, just that it seems like buying the same thing twice. Like paying a DLC fee for content that is already on the disc.

This is pretty similar to that pizza command in some mmo. Are you people that lazy, you can't look up the song yourself? Really? You might learn something by doing some research. Just another company (amazon) has to put their sticky fingers in the honey pot and once again consumer whore gamers love it.
Inadvertent advertisement and OVER convienence for the lose...which makes gamers MORE spontaneous (they're spontaneous enough as it is).

Sad to say that Rick Astley has more self-respect by not putting out a hack re-mixes from his renewed popularity. Wish the rest of the music and especially video game industry had such integrity. The musicians are going to get extra revenue from this game and the popularity that becomes of it...isn't that enough?

Wait what? How is this a problem. All that's happening is that if you like the song that's being played, and you're not a complete cheapskate, you can buy it. And if you like that song, you can buy other shit from that band/artist. There is nothing wrong with it. I mean I'm pretty sure that's how it works in real life to. Listen to a song on the radio, like it, then go buy the single on itunes.

For me, music is one of the most important parts of GTA. Two weeks ago I was on vacation in Miami, and there was a station playing nothing but 80's music. I was looking around like everything seemed familiar and my wife asked me what was up. I said "Last time I was here, this same exact song was playing and I was dealing drugs out of an ice cream truck." Then I pointed to the hotel across the street (the same one from the starting point of Vice City) and said "I killed a prostitute on that corner right over there!" I'd love to be able to carry similar memories around with me in the form of Amazon downloads once GTA:IV is released.

"And what's wrong with rap? Are you afraid that you'll turn into a black person if you listen to it?"
Damn funny!

I don't see what the problem is with some people, if you don't like this then don't do it. It's just a nice optional feature that probably a large number of people will put to good use.

I like it better when the company actually had to DO WORK and make its own songs for the radio (GTAIII).

Here's my question - can you get the tracks you've bought off of the PS3 and into iTunes on one's computer?

Unless I misunderstand what happens when you "flag" a song is that it sends you an e-mail on your computer where you can then download the track off of the Amazon music store. In that case, yes, it will play just fine on iTunes because the track is DRM-free.
Actually even if it downloaded onto your PS3 you'd still be able to put it on your computer with no problem.

If it means the in-game soundtrack will change, then it may be cool. The radio will keep giving me new things instead of the same loop over and over.
If it just means I can buy any of the songs on the standard loop that never changes, then I'd say it's pretty useless.

Don't get me wrong - I think artists should be compensated for their work. But when I buy the game I HAVE ALREADY COMPENSATED THEM - part of the cost of the game goes to the artists of the songs in the game (what, you think devs can use whatever music they want for free?). When I buy the game, I have already bought the songs - I refuse to pay again, developers really should start bundling the music on a CD (even if it's not a normal Audio CD, aka if they need to, go ahead and compress to MP3 or something) and putting the CD in the case along with the game.
Now, if Rockstar made a deal with an Internet radio station, or a service like Last.fm, and you were just hearing the music from those stations then yeah you would need to buy the music proper - but as I understand it that's not what's happening (it should though - radio becomes radio again, more variety).
