Those who harbored desires to go on Crackdown-esque romps through New York City with a genetically mutated pal will undoubtedly be crushed to learn that developer Radical Entertainment and publisher Sierra have decided to scrap Prototype's multiplayer mode in order to encourage players to truly delve into the single-player storyline, and, more truthfully, so they could meet their original Fall 2008 launch window.
Radical's Tim Bennison defended the decision in an interview with TeamXbox, hinting at a possibility of co-op functionality in post-release DLC, and confirming that "multiplayer will definitely be on the table from the start" when, should the game be well-received, it comes time for a sequel -- which we can only guess will be titled Reference Design, followed by the critically acclaimed Initial Model, and then the action-packed conclusion, Finished Product.

THANK YOU. People just focus on multiplayer and lol achievements rather than story and gameplay.
Still got Mercenaries 2! ... where the heck *is* that game, anyway?

And most truthfully, so their devs could have weekends and Friday evenings off.

I'll agree that 90% of the games I dove into this holiday season were Single player based. Portal, Half Life, Skate, Call of Duty 4, BioShock. They were great, especially Bioshock. The thing is these games took up a majority of my game time. I really didn't have much time for games with school and work let alone online multiplayer. Call of Duty 4 would of been great to hop onto for some online coop missions. Maybe playing as the Russian allies you sometimes have. The thing is though, while I agree games do not need online multiplayer to survive I often get lost from this online experience with my friends. Playing a game that puts me side by side with my brothers or friends back home on the east sides keeps us connected. It's fun to have that element. It sucks to have it ripped away.
The slow death of single player needs to stop
I don't consider co-op to be the death of single player, I think it breathes new life into it. I think it should be regarded differently than straight VS multiplayer.

When I purchase games I purchase them often used because I simply can not afford new on a college budget. The only time I purchase them new is if its the first 2-3 weeks since launch. I doubt many people are going to run out and buy a new copy months after launch when they could get a used copy for 30% off the new copy. Not only that if I have to PAY for the coop feature through XBL market place then I seriously doubt more people are going to buy it new.
Any word if the Multiplayer will cost more? It would suck to buy the game and 3 months later have a "Gold" edition come out with multiplayer but orignal owners have to upgrade.

*waits for them to charge 800 points for multiplayer*

Quote of the day right there folks.

Seriously, this isn't the end of the world. I'd rather take a lengthy, stellar single player experience without multiplayer than a rather contrived, dopey single player experience with multiplayer. Of course, this all depends on the kind of games you like to play. Some of us don't have a problem getting past a Level 50 boss by ourselves.

Would've pissed off a lot of people, but significantly fewer then they'll probably piss off with this measure

Now they should be able to make that game look and probably play better, cause the last gameplay demonstration the background looked like it was ripped from early PS2 games.

On the other hand, I purchased Crackdown(mainly because of the H3 beta, but thats not the point) and I still go back and play it with a buddy every so often. I've easily killed 6 hours with him, just goofin around. I was talking to this same buddy about the potential in this when they said there would be COOP. We're both pissed, needless to say.
This might get a rent, but it certainly aint a buy anymore. Sorry Radical, You guys screwed up this time.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the story will be outstanding. However, with it's competition offering many different forms of multiplayer in arenas that we are both familiar with and excited about, I don't see how they can afford to press forward with this decision. I honestly do not know how they can expect anyone to actually buy into the logic that they want the player to delve into the story more when all most people want is to play these games with friends and family. Apparently, they like playing games by themselves in a dark corner somewhere where friends and socialization is overrated.
Good call, guys. Keep up that progressive way of thinking.

Oh well, for now, I have GTA IV to look forward to: at least they had promised online multiplayer.
