Call of Duty 4 multiplayer boasts 'monstrously huge' numbers

When Infinity Ward producer, Mark Rubin, told Eurogamer that the number of online users for the PS3 version of Call of Duty 4 was "monstrously huge," we can only assume he was referring to a beast of significant size and infinite terror -- which pretty much rules out those Pokemon things. Indeed, the multiplayer monster appears to be of the house-trampling, child-eating variety, with Rubin having declared, "No other game has come close, either online current, or total unique users in a day."

The battle between Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 for Xbox Live supremacy was also mentioned, with the former shooter's "between 1.2 and 1.3 million users every day" trumping Bungie's slightly more spartan servers. As for the percentage of total game owners (over seven million at last count) that have taken their tactics online, Rubin describes the number as "startling." Who knew statistics could be so scary?

2 different tastes. I happen to like both, halo for its extreme variety in gameplay (you can go from rocket race to infection), but in straight up shooting, cod is better.

Funny that people want to see Halo died and are already writing its obituary.. Sorry dude, the million plus people playing it on a daily basis say otherwise and it is still the king of shooters. COD4 is a great game and no need to have just one great shooter.

Eh, Halo's been getting more hate than it deserves. I guess that's what happens when you release a solid, B+ game that is hyped to death. But hey, it's the most fun I've had on the 360 since..Halo 2.

While I like both games, I usually end up playing Halo more than COD4.

I recently got a copy of CoD4 and was very excited to try it after hearing so much about it. And honestly, after playing it for a few hours I'm just bored with it. It feels the same as CoD2 to me, which I only played cause it was a launch title. I don't get what all the fuss is. Back to Halo for me I guess.

Not to feed the trolls, but Halo is not a WASTE of money at all. I have gotten my money's worth just from the split screen online play feature... if friends are over and they want to play a shooter, Halo 3 is what we play since CoD4 can't do online splitscreen. I do play CoD4 more when no friends are over, though.

You know, if you really like this sort of thing, there is a war in Iraq right now...if you're 18 or over, you too can get your own machine gun and shoot people, for real. So head down to your nearest drooling recruiter, he's going to signing you right up. Only bad thing is you don't regenerate when you get shot in the face by a sniper.

Going with your idea here, though, if you like a series like GTA, you can always just go right outside, start shooting people up, carjacking, and killing hookers after you've had sex with them. Oh, and don't forget the copious amounts of dope you can snort up your goozle as well while enjoying some '70s classic rock in your El Camino.

It seems to me that someone is crying sour grapes over being such a horrible FPS player. What are scripted card games and turn based combat superior gaming vehicles according to you? Do you have one of those brain disorders where you have to see the entire image of the character on screen so you don't have some bizarre out of body experience that triggers some sort of seizure? Some of us like playing these games because it really challenges us against other human opponents, you know its like something called competition, and shooters currently provide the best avenue for that type of gameplay. If something else comes along that provides constant action and quick thinking gamings skills that pits you up against other human opponents then fill me in, until then keep having fun against playing against uninspiring AI.

I like that there is no law which states that I have to decide between Halo 3 or COD4... unless you just have a PS3.

Well, duh. PS3 has like nothing online... Nothing brings the people online like a good Shooter.

As far as 360 goes, I don't understand it. CoD4 is so boring. After 55, Single Player, and you get all of the gold weapons, what's left to do? "HEY! LET'S PRESTIGE AGAIN!!" ...It honestly doesn't make sense to me. At least Halo 3 has things to do outside of Online multiplayer. Forge, File Sharing, Saved Films, and 4 player Co-Op are a godsend. CoD4 has custom classes, but that's nothing compared to the monsterous amount of things there are to do in Halo 3.

I loved CoD2... I loved the history element, and the maps were great. On Toujane, there is actually an ad for Coca-Cola in Arabic. That's just cool... CoD4 has just about nothing that I loved from CoD2.

I'm happy playing Halo 3, and I'm happy with my friends. I guess that's all that matters. It just astounds me how such a mediocre game excels. It has graphics, that's all that I feel it did well.

I love my 360 but I also understand that the 360 was released way longer than the Wii and the PS3. More time to learn from consumers what's wrong with it and fix it. And yet it still having problems (well not mine though)

Dragood, I wouldn't go as far as to call you an idiot, but one of the most addicting things COD 4 has done is the easily accessible leaderboards during the Multiplayer interface. I can see my overall K/D ration, my wins, my overall score. It is instant gratification combined with instant reaffirmation. It's funny because I wish Infinity Ward would have a Bungie like website and Bungie would adopt an instant scoreboard like Infinity Ward has for overall stats. I prefer the Activision model right now because everything is right there when you log on.

Halo 3 has leaderboards, too... They're just after the game itself. It's much more in depth than CoD4's, and it's rather nice to be able to see my average life, K/D Spread, etc.

What I meant by graphics was Photorealism... Sorry about the confusion.
