Gears of War film producer Wyck Godfrey has told Coming Soon that the production company is shooting for a Summer 2010 release of the video game adaptation. Said Godfrey: "We've got our script on and a director we're about to attach. We'll hopefully make that early next year for the summer of 2010."
The script was written by Stuart Beattie (Collateral, Pirates of the Caribbean), who recently said in an interview that the production will likely be heavy on green screen usage, à la 300. The Gears of War film will be released by New Line Cinema, with CliffyB as executive producer. You should probably get in line now, you've only got 24 to 27 months before this Romantic Comedy of 2010 marches into theaters.

xFenixKnightx,
I was also thinking 2Gears2War: Locust Drift, but Gearsier just sounded a lot more manly.

Me as well. Right around the time I get back from my mission too. Just really hope it's good and the green screening will turn out good, unlike the mentioned 300. Most overrated movie ever. Hope the green screening will turn out more like Sin City did. Now that was an awesome movie.

IMO this movie can only work well if they do it all in CGI or mocap CG ala Beowulf. Other than that its probably destined for suckiness. Doom was garbage, and I like the Rock =( Smell what Im cookin'? No? Anyone?

CGI with the original peeps who did the games voicework of course. John DiMaggio for Marcus, Mighty Rasta for The cole train, etc.

That picture is chock full of WIN!
At least they got a decent screenwriter. That's a step in the right direction already. Hopefully they bag a decent director as well.

Sorry Joystiq you really screwed up. It is only March 31st, April Fool's day isn't until tomorrow.
What is weird though is that by 2010 movie tickets will probably cost as much as games.

I haven't played this game, but I always got the impression Gears was like Doom 3: graphically impressive but pretty vacuous. Can you really scrape an interesting story out of men with guns/chainsaws fighting aliens/demons? - or whatever it is the enemy is in Gears.
I have a feeling this might turn out like the Doom movie. Not very interesting.

No, they couldn't even do that with the game. There's no hope of a decent story for the movie.

I think you can. The game definitely shows the history that Marcus has, and that even some of the secrets about the aliens was found at his father's estate. I haven't played the story mode in a while, but I do remember there being enough there to write a good story about. Plus the characters are actually likeable. Now if they go the live action route, they need to find a charismatic former NFL star that can act to play Cole Train. That'd just really make his role more believable.

As anxious as I am for the movie, I'm probably going to protest it if they can't find some way to put Bender's voice into the head of whoever's playing Marcus.
